Fed up of seeing Acronyms in comments

Why does everyone, when making comments on social media or sites like these always use Acronyms. DH, dear husband, DD, dear daughter, it drives me bonkers. Have people forgotten how to write in a normal fashion, the way comments or stories should be written.

It makes no wonder that children and many adults cannot spell because they are too busy shortening words. Is it because they don't have time to write dear husband, or dear daughter or is it just laziness.

*Siope" lol 😉
Great clip, so clever and funny 😆

I am uncomfortable with posts such as this one. I would hate to think of anyone being put off asking/responding or simply joining in a discussion because of punctuation rules or use of acronyms etc. People are on this site for varied reasons- friendship, fun, advice and comfort.

I have a serious problem with the concept of dear husband …. husband is fine.

I have a serious problem with the concept of dear husband …. husband is fine.

I think on Mumsnet, where it started, the D was often ironic.

Well, I think it is just laziness. I am a very fast typist, I was a shorthand typist in the 60's and I can type Dear Husband faster than pressing the Caps lock on the keyboard and typing DH.

Same here. I am a very fast touch typist and find acronyms slow me down.

They have developed through texting. Obviously it's quicker to use them in that scenario and for non typists. It has now been absorbed into the cultural norm whether using a mobile or not.

I do get confused sometimes though especially on Mumsnet where they are more prevalent. Are they talking about their SIL (son in law) or SIL (sister in law) for example. Then there is DSD, took me a while to realise it was dear step daughter.

GrannyGrunter, live and let live. Each to his own and all that! wink
Does it really matter in the scheme of things? A rather critical post IMHO.

I have not forgotten how to write in a normal fashion, but as someone with R.A., typing can be problematic and any shortcuts which makes life easier are welcome.

Louella12 Thu 28-Dec-23 20:07:54

I don't like them, don't use them.

But I've got used to them now

Jaxjacky Thu 28-Dec-23 20:08:50

I accept others like using them, although I do find the D for darling ironic at times, I type family members titles in full.

MissChateline Thu 28-Dec-23 20:12:01

I can’t bear all these acronyms. As a lesbian grandmother, married to my wife, would anyone understand DW (dear/darling wife) In the right context? I don’t think so or that I would ever want to refer to my son in law as DSIL because he isn’t for many reasons. I think that this is lazy and needs to stop asap

Oopsadaisy1 Thu 28-Dec-23 20:17:28

I use them, if anyone doesn’t want to read what I write, I’m not really bothered about it.

If someone is stressed and posting for help, I’ll read it however it is written and not judge the way they write it on here, even if it’s difficult to work my way through it.

Live and let live why don’t you.

HowVeryDareYou2 Thu 28-Dec-23 20:21:11

Saw my DS and DDIL and DGD today, and then DGD1 messaged me. AIBU? IYSWIM grin.

Baggs Thu 28-Dec-23 20:55:29

It never crossed my mind to wonder whether I liked or disliked the acronyms (or forum abbreviations as they are also called) on GN. I puzzled over some of them at first but then I looked them up: www.gransnet.com/info/acronyms

and any temporary difficulties were solved.

Anyway, I like a challenge.

rosie1959 Thu 28-Dec-23 21:16:34

Not everyone has access to a keyboard and it would fox the best touch typist to do it on a phone or ipad.
Life's far to short to worry how anybody else chooses to post.

Wheniwasyourage Thu 28-Dec-23 21:16:36

I like them and will continue to use them. I don’t expect those who don’t like them to use them. Where is the problem with that?

OldFrill Thu 28-Dec-23 21:29:46

I use my phone, it's texting not typing. I can use any finger l want but haven't mastered the two thumb method prevalent amongst many of those younger than me.

Dickens Thu 28-Dec-23 21:35:30

You may not like the use of acronyms but they developed for a reason, as stated below, and are now part and parcel of social-media culture. For many, it is not a problem and if it is, for you, there's no obligation to use them.

But to imply that people are lazy, or that the use of acronyms has somehow created a nation of children and adults who are illiterate is offensive.

The reason that quite a few have difficulties with grammar and spelling is because of the way English was taught in schools many years ago. The accepted system was changed and it resulted in problems with spelling and grammar for many who had to learn what they were not taught.

The acronyms are quite useful for those who are using a smart 'phone with a tiny keyboard, and many do on here. It took me a little time to get used to them, but there is a list below and I soon became familiar with them. I can type almost 80 words per minute - but it is not all about me.

I can spell, and speak the King's English. Neither my children nor grand children are "illiterates", even though they also use acronyms when sending text messages to me.

You don't care what other people think? That's indicative of a closed and haughty mind. You've been on here a few weeks and want to change the way people communicate because it doesn't align with your way of thinking? Worse, you imply that people are lazy and / or illiterate because of it. Your comments are goading.

seadragon Thu 28-Dec-23 21:56:15

Crivvens! So much vitriol and criticism. Enough to put me off altogether!

Parsley3 Thu 28-Dec-23 21:57:00

GrannyGrunter YABU but well done for having high standards and sticking to them.

Galaxy Thu 28-Dec-23 22:00:41

I find people who want to control the speech of others very odd.

25Avalon Thu 28-Dec-23 22:05:27

I find myself wanting to use these abbreviations in ordinary texts and WhatsApp and then realise no one will understand what I’m saying.

Callistemon21 Thu 28-Dec-23 22:29:57

MerylStreep

I never read long posts with no paragraphs.

Me neither.

I'm not a very fast typist, especially on a tablet and I do use the acronyms listed on Gransnet, although I'd never heard of them before joining GN (Gransnet).

The ones on here are easy to remember.

merlotgran Thu 28-Dec-23 22:33:32

TBH IMO they are just a bit of fun IYSWIM.

FWIW I CBA to argue the point.

Callistemon21 Thu 28-Dec-23 22:33:55

Oreo

Bit cheeky there GrannyGrunter and designed to put posters backs up IMHO. How’d you like that?

Yes, joining a club and starting to criticise existing members for the way they laziltpy post is not the best start 😲
The emoji is expressing shock btw (by the way).

Callistemon21 Thu 28-Dec-23 22:34:27

lazily

And spell, too 😂
