Any regrets. Did things turn out as you thought?
Evidence on Andy Burnham's National Care Service proposals
Good Morning Wednesday 29th July 2026
Burnham to tell schools in England to adapt teaching to local business needs- what do you think?
Any regrets. Did things turn out as you thought?
No regeets as I don't think I could have done things any differently. It's been stressful and I think 2024 is going to be more of the same. So come 1 Jan I will gird my loins.
Gransnet has been both helpful and damn annoying. Maybe my regret is spending too much time reading posts!!! Resolution will be to just spend 15 minutes a day...and no more. See how that goes!!
Every Hogmanay, I pray for a better year healthwise, it never happens. I am accepting of that and have lowered my extremely high expectations!! 😉
I have little regrets, I gave my all last year and will approach New Year with the same mindset.
I wish everyone a happy New Year when it comes.
I’m not usually given to much reflection as the old year makes way for the new. The past 20 months have been tough. My husband’s diagnosis and death six months later in October dominated 2022.
2023 - a year of adjusting to living alone, to missing him so much, remembering the many happy years, being thankful for that and the blessings in my life. Family, friends and a life long ability to accept solitude help of course and for this I’m grateful.
Regrets are such a waste of energy and emotion. I will move into the new year trying to continue to build a good life without him
Last year was horrendous. This year, I’ve tried to pull things round to build something new after losing DH and in some measure that has gone quite well. Now I have to keep the momentum going, but in a lot of ways at the moment it feels like putting sticking plasters on a wound that isn’t going to heal. In time I hope I shall just need smaller sticking plasters. No resolutions for the coming year. What will be will be.
Iam64 and Greyduster

Like Greyduster and Iam64, my husband became ill early in 2023 and sadly died in April, so this year has been spent in dealing with everything, and this will continue as there is still so much stuff to clear and the estate to finalise.
I keep going with my choirs and church. I have a loving and supportive family. I have joined one new group and am making plans for holidays, but things will be very different. Life does not stand still. I am not given to looking back very often as it is easier and healthier to live in the present and to try to build a new future.
Many regrets - but I suspect quite a few others have them, too.
Cannot feel much enthusiasm for another year, there is too much misery for so many in the world, and our 'great-and-good' leaders appear lethargic in their enthusiasm to do much about it.
Like others, I will simply celebrate the small personal triumphs of family and friends that continue from one year the next.
I wish all GNers a peaceful New Year.
2023 has been a tricky year one way and another. I still feel the only way for me to deal with it is to concentrate on making my little bit of the world as good as I can.
The new year brings the hope of the safe delivery of a new grandchild, the expectation of a building project actually being completed(!), the celebration of my mum's 90th birthday and the ongoing prayer that people who think it's OK to go around with guns and knives. on both the personal and the global scale. will think again.
I wish all GNetters a peaceful 2024.
Sending kind thoughts to all those who have lost loved ones. These celebratory times of year can be challenging; but as "Iam" says there are blessings to be counted in the form of friends and family.
It has been a mixed year for me with deteriorating health and increasing difficulty in dealing with the loneliness. But there have been happy family events and a holiday, a lovely singing week and lots of activity with the choir I run. It is just a question of ploughing on and latching on to every shred of joy that comes my way; or more importantly that I create. It is no good me sitting back and hoping others will bring joy to me on a plate.
Hardly any regrets, although I would like to declutter and should really downsize since being widowed.
I have managed to fill the weekly diary with lots of activities and have enjoyed many trips, a particular joy.
I’m feeling my age rather, getting tired if I do too much and that’s a bother, but not much can be done about that.
This has been the most challenging and stressful year of my life. I fervently hope 2024 brings back more joy and less anxiety into my life. I look back on carefree days and feel bereft.
It has been a difficult year with a loved one and illness but unable to do anything about it.
It’s made us stronger as a family as we have supported each other. The problem has improved and it’s positive and we are hoping that’s the end of a difficult time for our family.
I have kept reading posts on here sometimes contributing to keep occupied and it’s helped.
I feel so despondent at the state our world is in , sick to my stomach about the gun and knife crime here and overseas - war in Ukraine and Gaza!!
I have a lovely and caring families although they are not without their worries. I have my DH but he is having memory problems, he has an appointment with the memory clinic in February. Other than that I look at the good things, take myself off for a walk or a spot of retail therapy!! My GS is 12 years old and still loves a sleep over at Grandma and Grandpas, he is coming this afternoon so we are looking forward to that. I wish you all a happy and wonderful new year . 💐💐
Well Sallywally1, I did the things I could control and the things I couldn’t tested me.
Things I could control both involved James Bond locations, in in May I took my wife to the Grandhotel Pupp in the Czech Republic (used to film Casino Royale) and we had dinner at the same table Daniel Craig and Eva Green sat at. If you think that’s a bit daft it gets better because in June we went to Rio de Janeiro and in the bond film Moonraker Bond comes face to face in a cable car over Sugarloaf Mountain with Jaws with the metal teeth, so armed with a wig and an aluminium pie tray I relived that scene in the cable car. The other tourists, some were a bit bemused but that’s me, a bit of an idiot but a kind one and that’s why my wife loves me.
Things I couldn’t control was all due to health, being on Rituximab because of my GPA Vasculitis means I don’t have much of an immune system. In September I had my 9th Covid jab and in October I caught it. Couldn’t get the Anti Virals because of an NHS mess up but got through it, a month later lost nearly all sight in left eye because of a Retinal Tear, surgery fixed that. December had my Rituximab infusion and feel crappy which will last 6 weeks.
But the one thing I couldn’t control that made me feel so good was my Brother and his wife bought me a pair of top notch Lycra Cycle shorts for Christmas basically saying “we know you’ve suffered a bit but it won’t stop you. I probably look silly at 62 but I don’t care.
Sending love and hugs to all of you who have lost love ones this year. Also to everyone who has suffered ill health to them or a member of their family. My heart goes out to you. No regrets for me because there is nothing I can do to change things so I plod on. Knit, knit and more knit! Peace to the world.
I don’t look back. There’s no point as I can’t change anything and I won’t be leaving thoughts of happy times behind because I’ll take them with me - wherever I’m going.
An inspiring post merlotgran especially so after the losses you have had to bear.
Thank you.
No regrets and no major problems to concern us, thankfully. 2023 is the first year out of the last five when we haven't lost someone close. 🌼🌼 to those still coping with the loss of loved ones.
I'll certainly be glad to see the end of December. First the car broke down, then the boiler broke down, then on Christmas Eve the downstairs toilet started leaking the day before we were expecting a housefull of guests 🙄
Wishing everyone peace, health and some happiness for 2024.
I see no point in having regrets, what is done is done.
This year has been reasonably good for us. Some family members have had a difficult time but some issues are now being resolved.
I spent much of the year in pain with my hip. In October we decided to make a dent in our savings and get my replacement done. Certainly not a regret.
Hoping for a happy and healthy year to come for ourselves and everyone here.
Sadly I know there will be worries and troubles for many of us but as someone says each morning Carpe Diem.
merlotgran

I need to take leaf out of your book merlotgran. I’ve done too much looking back over the summer months and was thoroughly miserable.
Happy New Year to all
Just glad I am still here 🙏
Gwyllt
Happy New Year to all
Just glad I am still here 🙏
Me too!
.
In fact a GP said to me recently, that she was surprised I was still here. 🤣
We are hoping next year will be better for us. We have had various challenges this past year of different kinds. It’s taken its toll a bit. One particular issue will hopefully be solved come February and then our plan is to book a nice holiday somewhere health permitting. We also have a new grandchild to look forward to which is a real blessing.
Not been a bad year for us, for which I am grateful. I like Lixy philosophy of concentrate on making my little bit of the world as good as I can, because, quite frankly, events on the world stage, and politically at home, are dreadful to contemplate. Sending my very best wishes and
to those of you who have had a challenging year of loss, bereavement or illness. Wishing all a happy, but more importantly, healthy 2024.
