Anyone just watched Mr Bates v the Post Office? *GNHQ tweaked the title*

So sad watching this. My lovely local Post Office closed down because of it. It was owned by a lovely family and their son was accused of theft as he was the postmaster. He went to prison for 18 months. His mum told customers it was the new Horizon system but rumours spread that he was a thief. Nobody would use their little corner shop anymore and people were racist against them as they were an Asian family. He was the nicest, most efficient postmaster and was super fast with serving you. So very sad they lost their home and business.

I hope anyone who has a Post Office Savings account now puts their money elsewhere.

We have watched it all & it was heartbreaking. How do the Post Office bigwigs sleep at night, especially Paula Vennells, a woman of the cloth. It beggars belief that this has been allowed to drag on for so long with these poor people who have lost their livelihoods, homes & reputations still not being paid compensation & exonerated.

mrswoo Thu 04-Jan-24 12:27:20

Autumnrose my thoughts exactly. Why did nobody in the Post Office join up the dots and investigate why suddenly, following a new IT system, previously honest, law abiding postmasters had taken to defrauding the system. I'm no expert but even I can make the connection.
I am beyond anger at the dreadful way these people have been treated and what they have lost due to the corrupt "powers that be".
I have signed the petition to remove Paula Vennell's CBE - what I would really like to see removed is her freedom.

I didn't watch it but it's a story I have been following closely for a long time. Absolutely dreadful, these people have suffered so much, been branded as criminals. ostracised, lost their homes and/or savings, their reputations and even their liberty while for much of the time the PO knew the problem was the computer system but they CHOSE to deliberately hide that fact and let others suffer such life changing events. IMO it's time for severe penalties and speedier reparations to those vilified.

Thanks for the link to the petition to strip Paula Vennells of her CBE, Maggiemaybe. I've just signed. I've been watching, getting more and more angry, as so many of us have.

I knew a little of this scandal before, but not all of the details. What a brilliantly made and shocking series. I agree that post office bosses should be prosecuted for the deliberate and prolonged lying and cover-up as well as their malicious hounding of post masters/mistresses when they knew the real problem lay with the horizon program.

I also think that some of those at Fujitsu who must have known about the issues, (indeed they kept trying to fix known bugs) should be prosecuted.

I hope the increased public awareness of the innocence of all those victims is now going to bring a little comfort.

I already knew alot about this case mainly from listening to radio 2 who have covered it alot . It is an absolute disgrace that these law abiding post masters weren't believed at the time . Paula Vennells should definitely be made to pay back the 400000 and return the CBE. It's such a truly shocking example of these kind of jumped up authority figures being believed over the honest humble shopkeepers .

SallyatBaytree Thu 04-Jan-24 13:21:52

Take the Vennells woman to task ..take away her CBE . She acted disgracefully, as did her side-kick ( can't recall her name)
So sad for hardworking postmasters and postmistresses.
I was hooked on the series ,watching a couple of episodes a night on ITVX.

I worked with a lady @ 2008 whose husband was ruined in this way by the Post Office. Lost their money, home, livelihood, his health.
He had a stroke and she was working into her 70s all the hours she could in a shop. To pay the bills and repay debts. She told us all about it and how their good name was ruined too.
Had been quite wealthy prior to sinking their assets into buying a shop with a Post Office.

155,000+ have now signed the Vennells petition 👍🏼

I think the reason why this series has fired up emotions, the public has a sense of decency and cannot bear the thought of the sheer injustice of what has happened to, honest people merely trying to earn a living. If we have to have this bloody elite presiding over us, they could at least be honest and worthy of their ill -gotten gains, so often they're not. They fail upwards, moving on to other lucrative positions. There is a ground swell of feelings as the numbers signing the petition would suggest but ultimately will it achieve the desired objective? we can only hope.

The small proportion of those who were compensated, it seems having to declare themselves bankrupt their monies were clawed back and The Revenue were on their case once they knew they had received compensation, which I imagine wasn't that much anyway. I'd like to see some of those culpable for the anguish they suffered stripped of their own assets. Sheer dishonesty and duplicity lay at the heart of what the PO and the Horizon computer system inflicted on the sub post office staff.

Joseann Thu 04-Jan-24 14:40:10

I dislike the way Paula Vennells kept saying the Horizon system was "robust". To me, that isn't the same as saying it was infallible. She was either very naive or lying through her teeth. I'm sure around the same period (2000), Air Traffic Control software broke down with dire consequences, so all new systems at this time were suffering glitches. Most were investigated and swiftly dealt with. So why didn't Vennells walk into the job as a new broom and be the one to unearth all the mistakes? She would have gained far more respect, instead of hiding everything, horrible lady.

Adam crozier did the job up to 2010 before Paula venells took over but his part in this hasn’t come up so far.
He then went onto ITV as cEO but left.
Interesting given it’s itv who are now showing the series

Hmmm very interesting.

Yes I have seen lots of mentions of Crozier and am unsure why he seems to be escaping the public wrath.

I like the fact that when Mr. Bates was offered an OBE for all his hard work in campaigning, he turned it down “while Paula Vennells keeps her MBE.”

A man of great principle. I admire him very much.

She got a CBE.

Angela van den Bogerd, played by Katherine Kelly, continued to be promoted within the Post Office and was found to have misled the judge under oath during the subsequent enquiry.

She then went on to a top job with the Welsh Football Association. She has since left.

How do these liars go from one top job to another?
It seems to happen all the time, not just in these instances.

Gwenisgreat Thu 04-Jan-24 15:36:52

The Post Offices attitude is unforgivable

Urmstongran Thu 04-Jan-24 15:40:51

Thanks Calli my mistake. So a CBE - even higher for Vennells. Seems failure just gets promoted as they say.

And truly socking about Angela vd Bogerd.

How DO these snakes sleep at night?
And Vennells in the Church hierarchy?

Sheesh.
