Heating !

Hi mines on 14 hours a day at 18c and it’s £220 for both. Keep trying to turn it down but it drops cold. Two bedrooms.

We have an air source heat pump which runs 24/7 365 hours a day, but the heating only kicks in when the room thermostat falls below its setting.

Too many.
But sometimes we use an additional heat source which helps.

So long as the heating is not on full whack, it helps keep the bills down.

It’s on a programmer, so kicks in if the temperature drops to set levels - 18c for a few hours morning and evening (six in all, I think), 16c during the day when we’re out or moving around, and off overnight, I cannot stand warm bedrooms.

Our heating is on all the time in winter (air source heat pump) at 20°, to heat our small, two-bedroom terrace house.

It works out at approx. £180 a month over the year. We don't have gas, so that is for all our energy use.

We are quite careful, though, for instance not using the hot tap unless we are actually going to use the hot water.
In practice, this means that we now normally use the cold tap to wash our hands, as the hot water takes so long to reach the hot tap that we would have finished washing and drying our hands long before it got there - in other words, every time we washed our hands we were paying to heat water that was doing nothing more than heating the pipes.
That, plus using a small air fryer instead of the oven, has reduced our usage a huge amount.

Mine is on for three hours in the morning and four in the late afternoon/evening. I have a Dimplex oil filled radiator which I use if I’m in the sitting room in the afternoon it’s cold. My bill is £100 per month.

Hardly ever. We have a wood burner in the living room and that's all we try to use.

My gas heating - only a couple of rooms - is costing £2 an hour. I’m paying Octopus £230 a month which just about covers it - thankfully, I’ve a credit balance with them to chip away at.

Gas central heating, until this cold spell it was on timer, 6:30-8:30, then 4:30-9:30, now it’s ‘on’ governed by the thermostat set at 20. Three bed semi, with Octopus.

I am currently sitting in 9 degrees, with a fleece, blanket, hottie and a useful dog over my feet. Gas heating and hot water are off (the same as last year). Dual fuel bill just under £200 per month. This is for one person. As we are in the process of moving, the DH is living elsewhere. His electricity only, for four weeks, was £182. Freezer, small fridge, kettle, lights and hob (he is out all day and no television or internet). Heating and hot water uses oil and has not been in use at all. It is unsustainable.

Well I think I am on par with all of you the way I use my heating , I agree with you Oldandproud about the hot water reaching the tap , 3 bedroom detached bungalow heating thermostat controlled ,its brrrrr out there today ❄️💨 so keep the heating on everyone .

I don’t suppose our politicians sit freezing with blankets on their knees in parliament!!

We live in a large 4 bedroomed 500 year old house. The heataing is on 3.5 hours in the morning and 6 at night. There are thermostatic radiator valves on every radiator.

Our bills over the last year have averaged out at j £250 -£300 a month. We pay the exact bill when it is presented rather than a monthly sum averaged over the year.

I am puzzled by how people in far smaller properties are paying very nearly as much for their heating as we are.

Ours is rarely on. In fact sat on our bed now we have no heating on and the window is open. Not penny pinching but our little apartment is only 15 y.o. and I think high spec when built, good insulation and the main room faces south so in the afternoon, behind glass, it’s warm till tea time.

So glad you are cosy in you apartment Urmstongran it’s lovely to sit with the warmth coming in through the glass, MOnica I pay my bill like you pay only pay for what I use every month send in the meter reading online the £180 bill was for the Christmas period when I used more electricity and boosted the heating for extra time due to visitors , so next bill could be maybe £130 but at least I only pay for what what I use.

We put it about 7.30 and off at 9.30 at an average of 20 degrees as we both like to be warm. Our bill with Octopus is £110 a month. This is a mid size new build house so the insulation is very goo.

Our heating is on permanently. Before we get up I set the thermostat at about 22°, and get back in bed for a while. My husband is 94 and feels the cold. If he is having a shower I turn the heating up to about 24° until he is dressed again. At bedtime I turn the thermostat down to 18°. My dual fuel standing order is £135 per month. I have just checked online and I'm still in credit. We have 2 bedrooms.

My heating is on permanently. I have lung problems and I need to keep warm to survive - no compromising here. It’s about £250 per month , average. I am on my own in a 4 bedroom house. I won’t be downsizing again, at my age.

Our very old system broke, no parts are available it seems. Previously it was set and kicked in only when below the set number. Now we use free firewood and are cosy - fireplaces hold and radiate heat.

Saving on heating is working well, here.

I assume we all only pay for what we use. Some of us spread the cost in equal monthly payments (often in return for a small discount) and some don’t.

I pay £175 per month for gas and electricity. I have the heating on during the day but not the night. I will got be cold.

My heating is on permanently I control it with the thermostat, at night it’s on 13* and daytime between 15* and 18* I rarely need it any higher. I’m paying Octopus £101 per month and still have plenty of credit which should last through the Winter.

Meant to add that £101 is for dual fuel.

As I ve said before I have a three storey Victorian house and only heat one room with a gas fire there is no central heating and I couldn’t afford to have it put in or to use it no double glazing and as I m in a conservation area very poor fitting sash windows at least I don’t get mould 🤣🤣🤣
I ve got oodies and thick blankets and hottie bottles if I need any extra
