Katie Hopkins as been quite rightly castigated after a viscous rant about Kate Garraway.

I do however feel that KG did parade her husband during his battle with Covid, it felt too intrusive to watch in an ICU bed intubated and hooked up to all kinds of support.

I’m sure he was not in a position to give his consent.

His recovery and return home was also put in the public domain, in my opinion it was too much.
There are apparently books and documentaries too.

I have never watched anything KG has presented or appeared in, I only know her as Derek Drapers wife, for which she now more famous for.

Should she have allowed Derek the dignity that Michael Schumacher has been allowed, his family have shown such love, care and respect, or was KG right to use her late husband to promote awareness?

I’m glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t know who KH is. I wouldn’t know her if I fell over her.

I understand what you are saying and I did at one point agree with you early on in Derek's illness but then found out that everything was in Derek's name (which I found a bit unusual as my late husband and I always had joint bank accounts.)

Apparently she had no access to money at the time only what she was earning herself which did not cover all the expenses that occurs when someone is ill. I know what she went through because I was my late husband's 24/7 carer for the last eight years of his life and had to buy every single piece of medical equipment because the NHS always asked for it back a few months after loaning it to us. Luckily I had access to our money as like I said it was in joint bank accounts but I did not have a way of earning money as I was a 71 year old pensioner at the time of my late husband's illness. We did not have carers as it was expensive and we were both pensioners with two state pensions and a small private pension so we had to watch the pennies because we were over the income threshold for any help with benefits. We were refused Attendance Allowance over and over again as I was told my husband was not ill enough to claim it but when I wrote to our local MP she got involved and we were given it immediately, sadly my husband died three months later.

So I do think that Kate has used every means possible to earn money for Dereks treatments and I applaud her for that and she has also brought to light just how bad Covid was.

I wish her and her lovely children all the very best in the coming years without her husband, as like I say, I know what it is like.

I’ve just been on companies house, she was a director of three of his companies.

Come down my way. She's often seen in our Waitrose café on her tablet, sipping coffee! You could accidentally fall into her! Oops! ☕️

She'd kick you while you were down, Germanshepherdsmum
And laugh whilst she was putting the boot in.
Odious woman.

I think the effects of covid need to be told.

The "simply a cold cope with it" attitude needs to be addressed and Derek Draper's very sad death throws more light on what can happen. And has happened and is still happening to very many people of all ages. For that I am grateful to KG whether she is gaining financially or not. I expect any private treatment he had has cost a vast sum.

Good post, HelterSkelter

Although Derek Draper's case was one of the worst cases of Long Covid, there are still many people suffering the long-term effects of it today.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 16-Jan-24 16:59:36

I’ve googled her out of FOMO. Her face isn’t remotely familiar. But at least I will know her if I fall over her and will know who to report if she kicks me. Not much of a looker is she?

Serendipity22 Tue 16-Jan-24 17:10:56

I have no knowledge of what has been said by KH but regarding Kate Garroway, i think she is truly remarkable. I can't imagine that she would have gone against her husbands wishes, she was truly devoted to Derek and her children and boy oh boy has she given 'it' her all.

Glorianny Tue 16-Jan-24 17:12:11

Kate Garraway had an estimated worth of £1.5 million in 2022, Derek Draper had an estimated worth of $15 million when he died. You do wonder how much money is needed by anyone.

She lost in a libel case and had to sell her £1m home to pay £500,000 in legal costs.
Yet still continues with her poisonous comments. She can't be very bright 🤔

Glorianny Tue 16-Jan-24 17:16:53

Katie Hopkins is reckoned to have £2.5 million. Most of it earned through celebrity appearances on shows. Of course to keep that up she needs to say things that get her into the news.

sodapop Tue 16-Jan-24 17:18:53

Walk a mile in her shoes, Kate Garroway lives her life in the public eye and used this to raise awareness. Maybe it was a bit intrusive for Derek Draper at times but I think their intentions were good.
I have nothing to say about the unspeakable Katie Hopkins
My sympathies are with Kate Garroway and her family.

Farzanah Tue 16-Jan-24 17:31:18

Did anyone see the YouTube of Josh Pieters pranking Katie Hopkins When I flew Katie Hopkins to Prague for a fake award (was in .2020)
A just reward for her I think.

Galaxy Tue 16-Jan-24 17:33:46

It's possible to have sympathy with the family and discuss the issue of consent. How we deal with the consent of those who for whatever reason may or may not have capacity is a subject that impacts on many people.

JenniferEccles Tue 16-Jan-24 17:39:44

Katie Hopkins of course has always been a controversial figure who seems to positively delight in pushing the boundaries. It’s her ‘thing’.
When more restrained though she can be funny in a very wicked way.
This time though she definitely went too far, and there could well be repercussions for her.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 16-Jan-24 17:42:34

True,*Galaxy*. KG went much further than was needed to publicise the dangers of covid.

Grannynannywanny Tue 16-Jan-24 17:46:34

I see Katie Hopkins in the same category as Laurence Fox. A pair of vile attention seekers who like to come out with outrageous or controversial comments just in case we forget about them.

If I remember correctly, she - Katie Hopkins - was given the opportunity to publicly apologise for libelling Jack Monroe.

Had she the grace to have admitted that her comments (tweets) were unfounded and apologised - she might not have lost her home.

Jack Monroe also has her critics. And I know little about her so won't comment - except to say that her pinch-penny recipes, designed for those who hardly have two ha'pennies to rub together, are very useful for anyone on a tight budget. She sells them (in order to make a living) but also donates many free online and in foodbanks. I've used some of them myself when I've had odd tins of food and bits and pieces left over in the food cupboard. She certainly has a knack of turning dull necessities into something quite palatable - for mere pennies.

Hopkins appears to decide to home in on someone who she doesn't like, and then go full tilt-at them, regardless.

She once sneered at those who chose "geographical" names for their children. she “didn’t like” children with "lower class” names such as Charmaine, Chantelle, Chardonnay and Tyler and that she would prevent her own offspring from playing with them.

... which is rather ironic considering one of her daughters is named "India".

I wasn't keen on all the publicity given to KG and her husband (for his sake), but Katie Hopkins is, quite simply, a very nasty piece of work.

Casdon Tue 16-Jan-24 17:54:15

I think you’re on the money regarding Katie Hopkins Dickens. She is a terminally vindictive person, and is indiscriminate in her choice of victim. She has no conscience. Unfortunately Elon Musk lifting the ban on her X account does nobody any favours except her bank account.

Kandinsky Tue 16-Jan-24 17:58:07

I don’t agree with a lot of what she says, but I have agreed with her sometimes ( can’t remember on what? )
I think it’s important that all views are expressed - providing they’re legal of course.

Casdon Tue 16-Jan-24 18:07:30

She doesn’t just express her views though Kandinsky, she makes up lies about people. That’s why she’s been in court so many times, and why she was banned from Twitter.

Galaxy Tue 16-Jan-24 18:12:30

Handing power over opinions to whoever runs Twitter is much more frightening to me than anything Hopkins has to say.

Bella23 Tue 16-Jan-24 18:22:48

I'm glad Sago started this post, I was beginning to think I was the wicked witch of the West, aided by a lot of comments.
I now realise a lot of people feel like I do I just put my comments on the wrong post I should have waited for this one.

Whethertomorrow Tue 16-Jan-24 18:32:02

I am very sorry for anyone having to deal with a bereavement, having gone through it when my husband died.

What I do know however, is that Derek’s much publicised situation absolutely scared me to bits. Covid in my mind became a ‘if you get it you’re dead’ illness. Of course, his story wasn’t the only bad one happening but as it was in the press so often it was the one affecting me the most.

I also wonder if his illness and the resulting tragedy made other people mask up and have the vaccinations that they might not have done.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 16-Jan-24 18:42:20

Judging by some recent posts, unfortunately I think not Whethertomorrow. A lot of people seem very blasé about the risks to themselves and others.

She doesn’t just express her views though Kandinsky, she makes up lies about people. That’s why she’s been in court so many times, and why she was banned from Twitter.

Precisely this.

She has neither the wit nor intelligence to be the scathing media rapporteur that she thinks she is.

She's just a spiteful and vindictive gossip - there's no talent required for that.

And, yes - she makes up lies in order to gain publicity because enough people "agree" with her views.

She came a cropper with Jack Monroe, but that didn't teach her a lesson. Any sensible person would've taken stock, but no that silly woman.

Her motives are as dishonourable as dishonourable motives can possibly be.

Sure - let her have her free-speech, she damns herself every time. Abominable woman.
