Im mostly a crochet person, which l still do for household patterns but
l havent picked up my knitting needles for years. Iv got a yen to have a go. Iv got box full of vintage patterns in my loft and l feel l might get hubby to get them down this weekend and see if there is a easy quick pattern l can do. l wasnt a great knitter, l couldnt do cable or fair isle, and the patterns had to be really simple .
l used to buy womens weekly that had free knitting patterns every week, ( do they still do that ?) when my children were little and make all their knitted jumpers/cardigans, mostly for our summer hols or winter.
When they were babies l must have made mountains of shawls, mattine coats etc , l even remember knitting in 3 ply wool for babies vests, took me forever to knit lol. Then latter all the dolls and barbie clothes.
l never once made myself any thing, it was always for the children.
Now, no one of my grown children generation seems to knit any more sad
l see lovely hand knitted children cardigans at crafts fairs but they dont seem to be bought very often sad

Good quality yarns are expensive and poor quality cheaper yarns are not much fun to use so it has , I think, become a rather expensive hobby. Hand knitted baby clothes that you see for sale are often a bit old fashioned, and modern designs in good, washable yarns are more expensive than shop bought garments. It is a real shame.

I started knitting again (after a gap of 15 - 20 years) when my first dgc was born.

The knitted jumpers, cardigans and toys were very welcome while the dgc were little. As there have been four dgc over the last 12 years, and the youngest is only 18 months old, my knitting needles are still kept busy.
My dil actively asks me if I would knit specific items, so I know that my efforts are still wanted and appreciated, but I know that this won't last last forever.

This is my latest project, still waiting for buttons.

I can't knit.
I never seemed to master it.

That's lovely, thank you for sharing the photo. It looks very complicated pattern though. You must have a lot of patience to follow a pattern.
l really fancy having a go at knitting a cardigan. might be too big a project for me though. My old friend used to knit all her own cardigans as she was a plus size and said she could make them cheaper by knitting her own. Every week at church she would come in a new cardigan she had made. they were lovely. They must have taken her more than a week to make though, so l guess she had few on the go.

I knit a lot (can’t crochet) but the relatively cheap acrylic yarns are fine for what I make for a charity that distributes therapy items to children’s therapists all over the U.K.

I used to make the odd jumper or cardi for the Gdcs, but the other granny makes lots of lovely ones for them - often in cable or other patterns that I’m pretty rubbish at.

PS, here’s Ellie the worry-eating* elephant with her little hand puppet friend - I only finished the puppet yesterday.

*there’s a deep mouth pocket for eating worries under her trunk!

I love to knit and made a lot of clothes for DGD for the first few years but both parents work and hand knits don’t do so well when machine washed. I made a lot of clothes for her dolls and matching hats too. Just made a long cardigan for myself and halfway through making a jumper in Aran weight wool mix. Could buy it cheaper but I really like the pattern and I wanted it in purple! Love to hear what you decide.

I am not a great knitter but I love knitting socks! The wool is so colourful and they are so warm. Look at Winwi k Mum co uk, there is also a Facebook Group.

I just knit blankets for the dogs, to keep my arthritic hands busy when I sit down in the evening, so nothing complicated. I love that little cardigan oldnproud. Maybe I should attempt something more adventurous.

This is the back of a cardigan I knitted in the 80s. I made a cushion cover from it.

Sadly I can’t knit or crochet (or sew).
I didn’t inherit my Nans talent for all of these things.
She was amazing at all of them 🤩

Many years ago when I was in hospital for three months, I knitted lots of cardigans and jumpers for our sons and then when I got home again, I didn't have the time.

When our youngest grandson reached 4 years of age, our daughter in law said she would love some hand knitted jumpers etc. for him but her mum couldn't knit but she didn't know that I could. I told her I would knit him lots of hats, gloves, jumpers and cardigans and she was over the moon.

I must have knitted him nearly 100 different items since that time and our daughter in law told me that when our grandson now comes home from school in winter, the first thing he does is go to his drawers and pulls out one of the jumpers I knitted him because they are soft and fluffy. I did different sizes so when he grew they would fit him him until he started to want store bought knits. She has also kept the ones that no longer fit him as they were knitted with love by his grandma. I have also knitted many toys and our two daughters in law have asked me to knit toys for their friends young children.

I go online and find so many special offers, I think one company is called Lovecraft but I only knit soft chunky items as the needles are thicker and they knit up in no time at all. I still have large tubs of wool in my laundry room and I am thinking about knitting myself some jumpers and scarves.

Helps me lose weight as well as I have no time for chocolates and biscuits as it means I have to keep washing my hands.

I have just restarted after a long gap, so a simple cowl to start, multi coloured good quality yarn and it is well underway

Primrose53 Sat 03-Feb-24 15:37:22

These socks are on my needles right now and these are two crochet throws I mad several years ago. I prefer crocheting.

Go on, have a go!

Primrose53 Sat 03-Feb-24 15:37:45

Made even.

Greyduster Sat 03-Feb-24 15:46:37

I knitted for my grandson when he was small but he wouldn’t be seen dead in a knitted sweater now! I’m currently about half way through a cardigan that I’m knitting for myself that has cables on the front and sleeves. It’s taking me so long that I may end up about three sizes too big for it! I never got the hang of crochet. I look at the amazing things people make and am in awe.

Namsnanny Sat 03-Feb-24 16:10:25

Oooh primrose53 that brightly coloured crochet throw is gorgeous!
Love the purple elephants witzend
Oldnandproud the different stitch cardi looks very professional.
The cable on your cushion/cardi looks very expertly done petra

Well done everyone.
I've just been making hats of late.
Sadly my children arnt keen on hand knitted items for my gchildren. But they usually find a use for the hats.

Doodledog Sat 03-Feb-24 16:17:52

I knot a lot. I use expensive yarns, but think that's ok as not only is it a hobby but I get to wear the garments too, and make them out of fibres such as cashmere that to buy ready made in the weights I use would be unaffordable.

I really dislike acrylic, as not only does it often feel rough (not all of it - some acrylics can be soft) but it's nowhere near as warm as natural fibres and it doesn't decompose in the same way (it's basically knitting with plastic).

Doodledog Sat 03-Feb-24 16:22:41

I knit a lot, too grin
