Do any of you still do knitting as a hobby ?

I learned to knit aged 5 at school (those were the days) and have never really stopped! One suggestion, if none of your vintage patterns are suitable, there are lots of websites where you can free ones to print at home, or sometimes hard copies for the price of postage. Just google free simple patterns. Good luck. I envy you having lots of vintage patterns - wish I'd kept mine.

PS I can't knit with or wear wool and usually use a blend of cotton and acrylic. I know it's basically plastic, but there are some good quality synthetic yarns out there at reasonable prices. Best to visit a yarn shop and have a squish!

I joined a knit and natter group and have been made very welcome. They are a lovely bunch of ladies.

I can knit but was a late learner.
I just don't find it relaxing .
I certainly admire people , who are great knitters .
I'd rather embroider and make my own designs .

I've started knitting hats and just done one on 4 needles. The last time I knitted on 4 needles was aged 11 when we were expected to knit a pair of socks. I don't think mine were ever finished. I just remember having a lot of work pulled out or taken back when I was supposed to be "turning the heel". It's taken me 60+ years to get over the trauma. Hats are easier!

This is the back of a cardigan I knitted in the 80s. I made a cushion cover from it.

That's lovely. Very clever.

I love knitting but mainly do scarves or small items like blankets for my grandchildren.

I've just finished a blanket for Aurora in pink/white.

I looked at a pattern for a cardigan but the cost of the Debbie Bliss wool was £47!!

I didn't know how to knit on four needles before Google.
I am still trying to perfect my technique,but it has improved a lot since I changed to knitting with the yarn in my left hand instead of the right. There is still plenty of room for improvement though.

I stopped knitting when the dog arrived as a puppy 3 years ago. It’s probably safe now and I have 2 sleeves of a jumper to finish. Just can’t seem to get motivated.

Whoops I posted the send before ready. Here’s a cardigan which I made for a friend for christmas and a little sweater for another friend’s granddaughter.
I love knitting and it keeps me sane because I do battle with depression on a daily basis. Lately I am recovering from a hysterectomy which was done on 22nd January. Early days yet but my knitting is keeping me going.

I used to enjoy knitting but my eyesight, stiff fingers and a back that doesn’t like me sitting upright has discouraged it. However, I have been thinking that maybe I could get going again. I used to make sweaters for dear husband and my dad. I even knitted a dress years ago. It was knitted entirely in cable which I liked and somewhere there is a photo of me in it!!!
Also knitted picture sweaters and cardigans. The trouble is that I doubt I would even remember how to do these things now. My knitting started in the days when you had someone to hold out their arms or find a chair to wind balls of wool from the skeins that were bought then. It’s a lovely hobby and it even stops you nibbling throughout the evening.

That is lovely. My sil also knits blankets for dog homes. She says it gives her something to do and the kennels appreciate them.

Os Should add she is disabled so appreciates the activity.

I'd like to knit blankets for dog shelters. Can anyone who does this tell me what size they usually do...or should I make random sizes?

I knit too.
I work on simple things when watching TV or travelling. During lockdown I knitted a cabled cardi for my OH. Now I have retired I enjoy challenging myself with more complex projects.
I currently have a simple crochet project - granny square cardigan - for myself, and a knitting project making a beaded bag for my DD.
My mum taught me to cast on and cast off when I was about 10. The rest I have taught myself with knitting books.

Most recently I joined a local knitting group. It's fun working on joint projects.

I enjoy knitting while listening to audio books and true crime podcasts. I also enjoy cross-stitch.

Incidentally some of the discussions on the Gransnet Arts and Crafts forum are about all things knitting.

I’ve returned to simple knitting after many years. Mainly to knit small items for grandchildren which are always appreciated. Next thing is I’m going to learn crochet so I can make small items for them. In our library there are knit n natter groups so another way to make new friends.

That is gorgeous, that is what I did for our grandchildren and their friends. The knitting kept me off the chocolates and cakes as I got fed up of washing my hands every time I had a snack.

I started knitting again during lockdown, spurred on by the imminent arrival of our first grandson and helped by a lovely local shop that took phone orders and then delivered Yarn all safely sealed too the door.

I'm now much improved after virtually having to relearn what my dear old Auntie taught me at the age of 8 or so.

Successfully made baby jumpers, hats and blankets and now he's bigger really enjoying making warm jumpers for him, at the request of his Mum (and Dad), who seem to really appreciate them, which is quite heartwarming.

Forgot to add to the above, I find it helps to stop my constant snacking which I succumb to when watching TV or reading 😂🍰
