Do any of you still do knitting as a hobby ?

Old and proud, that little cardigan is so beautiful. Did you make up the pattern? What wool did you use? I must knit it.
Primrose your crochet is exceptional, I try and try but can't matter it, so wish I could as I love knitting and embroidery etc but crochet defeats me. Been practising granny squares for weeks and they look awful so I've given up.
I looked at wool yesterday as I wanted to knit in that and not acrylic, it was £6 a 50 gram me ball in the sale so the cost would be too much.

Thanks. My adult niece was never interested in any crafts but during lockdown she taught herself to crochet and has made some fantastic things. She sold quite a lot too. Take a look at Bella Coco tuition on line, that’s what she used. I am sure you will pick it up from there.👍

Allsorts I use Stylecraft acrylic yarn for those throws as it is very soft, nice to work with and washes beautifully. I wouldn’t use pure wool for throws. I guess they cost me £25 - £30 each in yarn with lots left over to partially make another or a small lap blanket.

There is a lot of snobbery attached to yarns but I can honestly say the worst yarn I ever used was Debbie Bliss pure wool. It stretched dreadfully and kept slipping off the needles.

Modern acrylic or acrylic mix yarns are ideal for baby and kids clothes too which need frequent washing.

I found the original pattern (Patons Astra) free online, but it was for a jumper and I knitted it for my eldest dgs when he was about 3.

I liked it a lot, so later adapted it to a cardigan for youngest dgcs when he was 6 months old, and the photo is of what will be his 4th cardigan in that design, to hopefully fit him next winter. The original had cable up both centre back and centre front, but my cardigan only has it up the back.
I am no expert at adapting patterns, so there was a lot of guesswork involved, and if I'm honest, I'm not quite as happy with the results of this last ones as I was with the smaller ones, but hopefully it will still be ok.

I have knitted it (mainly] in Yarnsmiths acrylic because it is cheap, comes in a huge range of colours and seems to machine wash reasonably well for such a cheap yarn.

Your cardigans are both brilliant, Purplepixie and Oldandproud! Love them both!

I can knitted but prefer to crochet these days because I don't need to concentrate to crochet . I mainly make hats as presents for people they seem to go down well and have made pinafores for my grand daughter . I like making baby blankets as well which are good to crochet . I've got 2 to make next after I've finished a couple of hats .

How old were you grandchildren when you taught them, purplepixie? That sounds like a great idea.

Primrose53 I agree Bella Coco is an excellent resource for crochet.
I'm trying to stick to one brand of yarn so all my odds and ends can be used together. And Stylecraft Special works for knitting and crochet - I really like it.

I enjoy knitting simple beanie hats and also squares for blankets. I used to knit and sew clothes for my family when they were small but whilst they and the grandchildren like the hats they're not really into wearing my knits

As im stuck in bed most of the time , l thought why dont l make an old fashioned 1950's style bed jacket !!
if l can find some soft yellow 4 ply wool ll be all set up to get comfy when l write my 1950's journal. perfect but daft lol.

Yes I knit a lot. Blankets, hats, gloves, socks, scarves…. Anything really. I am very left handed so find crochet difficult. I have tried to master it several times but sadly have given up now. Has anyone any experience of Japanese knitting?

I’m envious of all your skilled knitting on this thread. Despite my Mum being a knitter it’s a skill I didn’t master. I learned the basics but never successfully knitted a garment unless a scarf counts.

I remember 60 odd years ago at school struggling with 4 needles trying to knit a pair of socks. I just couldn’t get the hang of it and was constantly dropping stitches. Every day I was waiting for a reprimand from my teacher who had previously ridiculed my aforementioned scarf in front of the entire class. I dreaded going to school if I knew it was a knitting day.

One morning I turned up for school to see a fire engine in the yard and they were hosing down the smouldering remains of my classroom. As everyone stood in shock I was thinking please God let the teacher’s cupboard and my half knitted sock be burned in the fire.

My prayers were answered 😆

Grannywannynanny, I stopped going to Brownies because of the dreaded knitting - I was so slow and messy at it.

A few weeks later a girl from my form, who was also a fellow Brownie and real little Goody-two-shoes, teacher’s pet type, came up with a sort of smugly accusing look on her face and said, ‘Brown Owl wants her red wool back!’ 😂

Yes, I knit. I find it so relaxing to do while watching telly. In the past I’ve knitted for my grandchildren and children, but none are interested in receiving a home knit now. So I make jumpers and cardigans for myself.
It’s sad that my local wool shops have closed so I buy yarn and patterns from the Knitting Network online.

Hi, I also crochet but knit an awful lot. I mainly knit items for charity and hand-knitted items for friends children/grandchildren/babies. It's as cheap or expensive as you want it to be. I always but my wool from online shops especially when it's on sale. EG Lovecrafts, The Little Wool Shop, Knitting network, SMD. Also, I look on Pinterest for free patterns you can download, Lovecraft have a lot of free to download too. You already have the needles and patterns so give it a go.
