Ash Wednesday/Valentine' s Day

Oh, Beechnut.

Received our ashes and given cards - nice day.

Ash Wednesday for me is the beginning of Lent. I will give up all sweet stuff chocolate biscuits etc until Easter. Don’t like pancakes so take no notice of Shrove Tuesday although I had a scone last night and a few pieces of chocolate as last “treats” before today.

Never really did Valentine’s Day and now divorced that’s definitely just another day

Whilst we were engaged, my husband said he would buy me flowers any day I fancied but never on Valentine's day; He regarded the whole thing as American nonsense. He stuck to it and.......didn't matter a jot. In fact, it was an ongoing joke.

We celebrated our Valentine's Day yesterday, as it was our anniversary of getting engaged 49 years ago.

This morning I received a lovely card, a dress and two pairs of earrings. 😍

We then went to Mass and received our ashes. Spaghetti alle vongole tonight, as no meat allowed.
However, I love clams, so not a penance. 😉

So.. we managed to celebrate both days!

Our wedding anniversary is on 17th Febrary, so we have never bothered with St Valentine's day.

We have never taken any notice of either.
We did have pancakes yesterday but that was to celebrate DD3 coming 5th in the local pancake race. The original and oldest race in the country.
However, DH did return from shopping with a bunch of roses but was quite surprised when I asked if they were for Valentine’s Day.

Today is my son’s birthday so poor man has to pay top dollar in restaurants if he chooses to eat out!
We don’t celebrate St Valentine, just our son’s birthday.

Ash Wednesday never had happy memories for me, as a child growing up, Ash Wednesday was a day of fast and abstinence so my Mother would be in a filthy mood as she would be hungry.

We would go to Church for the Ash Wednesday service, we were not allowed to wipe the ashes off, they were sacred😬.
My mother loved virtue signalling!
I hated the priest pressing the ash onto my forehead with his thumb.

We then had to endure Lent with all the rules my mother would impose!

Got out of bed to find a trail of rose petals leading to a huge bouquet of red roses and some heart shaped chocolates in shiny red wrapping.
On the mantelpiece was a beautiful card containing a love poem written by Orlin and a gold embossed card inviting me to dinner at my favourite Italian restaurant…
and then I woke up.

Then 🤣🤣🤣

Pancakes yesterday but I went out to lunch today with friends so Mr C is making his own dinner
Oh dear.

No religious significance in our house.
I also told DH not to bother with flowers as I saw the receipt for last years. So I got the silliest card he could find I have had to wear a big tin badge with Wonerfull wife on it all day. Quite a joke as we had had at least 3 rows about how to de moss the drive before lunch.
I think our motto should be an argument a day keeps the boredom at bay.

On the basis that you’ve got to take the chance to celebrate while you can, we’ll be having an M & S Valentine’s meal deal tonight, including the prosecco

I thought of popping in to M&S on the way home Maggiemaybe but it was raining and I'm not hungry ....

Perhaps a glass of wine 🙂

Yes I am celebrating, candles lit cards on the mantlepiece, wine in the fridge and table laid. Food cooking.
I am looking forward to the evening.

It is!

So that's why a man I saw in town at lunchtime was carrying a huge bouquet of lovely flowers, and why the nearby flower stall in the mall had a bigger display than usual. It never even crossed my mind. 😁
There were more flowers in that bouquet than my OH has given me in over 40 years of marriage, so it will come as no surprise when I say that today is just another day and always has been.

Ash Wednesday has never featured in my life, although we used to do pancakes on Shrove Tuesday.

My DH gave me a card he made with a little sticky-note. He made it 19 years ago, and gets out the same little card every year. he started marking the year on the back when

I had some Valentine cards for the grandkids, so gave one to him. A little T-rex telling him he's T-riffic!

And we are not church goers, so no ashes for us. I went to Catholic school until the age of 12, but fell out of habit after that, and only go occasionally.

I have vivid childhood memories of having the ashes put on the forehead by the priest with his thumb, I think? roughly in the sign of a cross at mass on Ash Wednesday.

We're celebrating Valentine's Day with the Waitrose Valentine's Day meal.

We had pancakes today as DH was volunteer driving yesterday and it took hours,

Happy Saint Valentine´s Day & Ash Wednesday ..

My husband bought me a desperately needed new Samsung Mobile as my old mobile was on its last leg.

He disguised the packaging so I had no idea there was a mobile inside the fairly large box !!

We have been together over 60 years. I still get an ‘anonymous’ Valentine card from him.
Ash Wednesday passes me by but I have an aunt who goes to church regularly and takes her previous year ‘s cross to be turned to ashes.

We’ve always celebrated it. I buy a wine card and some if his favourite sweets. He bought me card flowers chocolates. He made my tea tonight with candles and music in the background. 46 years and still doing ok. I know we’re lucky to have each other.

Not just catholic. I’m C of E and I was ashed this morning in church. DH and I have always sent each other Valentine cards. This year he can’t get out so I bought a card and we sent it to each other. Tricky with lent starting on the same day so no chocs for me but a lovely day none the less.
