Something for fun today.

My mother in law was a very opinionated and a no boundaries kind of a woman. She wanted all of her five daughters in law to provide multiple grandchildren as soon as possible and as many as possible.

I had the effrontery to wait until I’d been married for four years to oblige and then another four for the next one. The whole huge family were around hers for Christmas dinner and the subject of children came up (inevitably). She stood up, looked at me and said,

“I suppose you are one of those odd women who only ovulate when you have sex”!

Cue baffled silence and giggles.

I’d love to hear your stories. It can be anything anyone has said not just mother in laws.

Reminiscing with two male friends over photographs of a NYE party we all went about thirty years ago ‘ you used to be quite a looker’.

A lady I worked with and used to chat to occasionally, see at works dos etc, sadly lost her husband. He had a good job and they had a full social life. At his funeral I said to her that if ever she fancied going out for a coffee, drink etc to let me know as we lived near each other and I felt sorry for her.

We went out a couple of times. All the high flying friends had dropped her. On one occasion we were out and she said to me 'There are people I meet up with now that I wouldn't have dreamt of meeting up with when DH was alive. No offence'.

I've just remembered another one! A group of us were going out for the evening. We met up with a friend of a friend who was effusive in her compliments to one of us, how young and attractive she looked. She then turned to me and said, "Oh well 'Batty'. At least you have character." 😱😂

"it's alright for you mother but I wouldn't wear it ". hmm

A colleague once said to me "I do like you. You're so ordinary."

GrandmaSeaDragon Thu 15-Feb-24 19:49:06

DH’s elderly aunt to me (in the 80s) - “you look just like Princess Diana, I hate that woman” !

Dear FIL sitting in mixed company at the time of the Jeremy Thorpe scandal said "It's his poor wife I feel sorry for I bet she doesn't know which way to turn". We all spluttered our tea and he sat mystified.

Grandmabatty Thu 15-Feb-24 20:27:51

I think I was too stunned at the effrontery!

I once was out in town early morning with my husband. A woman maybe mid 60's was walking towards us, she smiled at me then as she got close, she nodded in hubby's direction and said quietly to me, "There's some funny onions around here." And carried on walking. Hubby and I looked at one another and cracked up laughing!

Walking around the back of Rackhams in Birmingham, I was called over to a police panda car. The two police officers then asked if I was wearing harmony hairspray!. Only a certain generation will understand this. 😅

When I was 12 or 13, my friend and I went to stay with her grandmother. On seeing my older sister, the lady remarked,
"She's very pretty."
My face must have fallen because she followed it up with, "You're not so bad yourself!"

Had been on holiday at lovely hotel and mentioned at work that there wasn’t a full length mirror in my room. Very glam and pleased with herself colleague said ‘oh Rose, I didn’t think you’d be concerned about a mirror’. Not sure how to take that🤣🤣

NotSpaghetti Thu 15-Feb-24 21:32:52

kittylester Thu 15-Feb-24 21:34:44

An 'honorary' aunt, 'Oh, you do look like your mum at the same age - though she was a lot prettier.

I love this thread !

I can’t think of anything funny, except once, when I entered my friend’s car , she asked me “when did you start smoking ?” - I hadn’t , but I had been cooking 😂

Many years ago I lived in London. We'd been to a great club and we were waiting at the bus stop for the night bus home. I was stood on the edge of the pavement, rocking backwards & forwards, in a world of my own, having had a sherbet or two, when a man came up to me and started whispering in my ear. After a few seconds it occurred to me he thought I was waiting to "pick someone up". I very politely, but definitively declined.

Whethertomorrow -thank you for the compliment !
My father used to say that there's definitely something in the water in the area in which we live !

My late father in law told me I was defective. I was born disabled.

As a young woman I was told by a young man I worked with " I really like you,you make me feel safe"
Wasnt really what I wanted to hear,I didnt fancy him anyway.

A boy I went out with, said I had good teeth ,nice ears, and a good sense of humour to make up for my lack of looks.

HowVeryDareYou2 Fri 16-Feb-24 09:53:58

Whiff What a horrible man

Kate1949 Fri 16-Feb-24 10:05:09

A neighbour said to me once 'I've always thought I was just that little bit better than everyone else.'

AskAlice Fri 16-Feb-24 10:13:29

I invited a friend round to mine for the evening (it was a special birthday celebration), along with some other friends. She said "Well, we did have plans for that evening but we can always go somewhere nice another night!"

Witzend Fri 16-Feb-24 10:50:50

biglouis

When my father said there was no point in educating a girl because I was only going to "get married and have babies" I told him I intended never to have children.

He told me "You will have what god gives you in life" (yes - seriously)

I told him I would have what I took for myself. It earned me a walloping but I have never regretted the walloping and would say it again.

Sounds as if you had a pretty horrible father, Biglouis. So sympathies for that.
