Yesterday on our local BC news, both television and print, had the titles
"Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in Whistler for Invictus Games Training".
I was curious why they used that headline, rather than using their official titles. Then I questioned their actual titles and how they should be addressed. I googled it, but admit I'm still a bit confused. He is a prince by birth, but not using the title now, so should be addressed as a Duke?
Should the headline have read 'The Duke and Duchess of Sussex..." instead? Even CBC which is funded by government much like your BBC used "Prince Harry and Meghan..." which I thought was odd.
I wonder about the media's reasons for using such casual titles, and even using Meghan's maiden name when they've been married for 8 years.

CanadianGran
Dadima, in reply to your post Fri 16:50, I didn't actually read that he wasn't using his title, but assumed. As Canadian, the RF is not often in the news like they are over there.
I just thought it was odd the way the media referred to them and assumed they should do it properly, although I admit I don't know what the proper way is,
So Prince Harry is correct for him, how should she be properly named? Duchess Meghan or The Duchess of Sussex, etc.
so I looked up other Duchesses. Sophie Rys-Jones is the Duchess of Edinburgh. What would she be called in a newspaper headline?
I guess this post was more about what to call H & M rather than interest in the actual couple. And I guess assuming the media should do things properly, then wonder the reason they don't. Since we don't have royalty living here, they are not in the news other than perfunctory mentions.
I am impressed you know the full name of Duchess of Edinburgh.
Many years ago, when we were attending a Christmas meal and concert at St James Palace organised by a charity, no one sitting around our table knew the name of Princess Anne’s husband, not even the bloke representing the charity. My husband even called him John. I did not see anyone curtsying to the Royals either.
With that blasé attitude towards the Royal family, I am not surprised the newspapers here named H&M casually instead of their proper title.
As far as I know, Windsor is not their real surname. Their real surname is Saxe-Coburg.
During World War One when Britain was fighting German, there was huge anti sentiment towards the Germans in this country, so they changed their German surname to Windsor after Windsor Castle.
Harry changing his children’s surname to his title is not historically correct but not surprising since he is a complete tosser.
My daughter works with Californians. She told me that the Californians are quite particular with hierarchy more so then the British.
She is Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, not Meghan the Duchess of Sussex, (there have been previous incumbents) and never Duchess Meghan.
The surname is Mountbatten Windsor, Mountbatten was added because of Prince Phillip who was a Mountbatten
Harry’s birth certificate gives Mountbatten Windsor
I was told once by a man with plenty of experience with women that those who were constantly touching, patting and hugging were sexually frustrated, hence their need for physical contact.

Well a man would say that wouldn't he.
Of course some people would judge "plenty of experience with women" as "he couldn't keep one" I wonder why?
Seems like a need to control all around her

Perhaps he felt his wide social experience entitled him to make that judgement.
I find it’s those objectionable males who overdo the touching and patting, so he may be right about men.

That was his excuse 😁
Why does a woman do it ?
Oh dear so many armchair psychologists on here interpreting small actions in a negative light. The media do the same - when Kate was pregnant she was touching her bump protectively - when Meghan did the exact same thing she was guilty of trying to draw attention to herself. Now if she holds Harry’s hand she’s guilty of being controlling, whereas a casual photo of Kate touching William is interpreted as being affectionate. Meghan was criticised as having a certain flower in her bouquet which apparently caused upset - Kate had the exact same flower in hers which was “charming and traditional”. I think there’s a pattern here - there is nothing this woman can do except perhaps cease to exist to please some people.
Now there’s an idea …

That’s a bit unkind, CoolCoco. I haven’t seen that suggested on any other post except yours.
Hell bells, trying to avoid bitching, usual from Megan devotees
Megan does it no matter , a prize giving , an award, she does
it to people I wondered why
CoolCoco, I’m with you on this of course . The level of unpleasantness directed at MM by some people and news papers knows no limits.

Because some people hug and some don't.
I don't. But some people really like huggy people. It's getting more common anyway (and some men even hug other men!!!!!
)
Not hugging,

I think she was Sophie Rhys-Jones for years then Sophie Wessex.
Countess of Wessex
The Duchess of Edinburgh
Duchess Sophie in Hello Magazine.
Or just Sophie
Take your pick!
I’m not a huge fan of MegHan, or indeed any of the RF over here, but the bitchiness about MegHan here is making me feel sorry for her! She touches / hugs people - why? Because she’s American, because she’s a ‘touchy- feely person by nature, because it’s a friendly thing to do…….?

Well perhaps because I’m British, I don’t like being hugged by all and sundry.
Nothing wrong with a firm handshake with people I hardly know.
I suspect many of the Royals feel the same (the Princess Royal springs to mind).
Bet Meghan never attempted to hug her on first acquaintance.

Me too, Calendargirl.
I do think hugging goes on more in America - Michelle Obama and Jill Biden do it. Interestingly Melania Trump does it far less, but then she has Slovenian origins.
