Im approaching 70 and am about to buy a car, maybe my last, lol!
Undecided whether i should go for a manual or automatic.
Any views on the subject?
Thank you.

I've had an automatic and loved it im currently driving a manual only because it was in my budget and a good car! I did notice my automatic used more petrol than this one does even though basically same car.

I am 83 and found it is so much easier to drive my automatic. When your concentration is failing it's one less thing to think about

I went to just look at cars today. I'm picking my new automatic one up next Wednesday, after 46 years driving a manual one.
I decided to bite the bullet!

I drove an automatic in America on holiday and hated it, but probably having to drive on the right didn't help. The only other time I drove one it was a courtesy car and I didn't drive it far. I'm likely to get a hybrid next as I'm not sure the infrastructure is there yet to go fully electric, but hadn't realised it would be an automatic. I guess there a times it would be advantageous and as I get older who knows what aches and pains may befall me so perhaps a good thing,.

We nervously test drove an automatic this morning. We were both pleasantly surprised at how easy and smooth it was to drive. We kept going to change gear. Looks like we’ll order one, just needs practice.

Hi, I think you should consider if you want electric, hybrid or petrol car? All come as automatics….If you are investing in a new car probably only a petrol car will come as a regular manual these days…and remember in about 20 years time ther will be no new petrol cars, therefore no manual cars as we know them.

Sorry I meant 10 years…

grin. What have you chosen? And what colour?

erl4221 the vast majority of us do not buy new cars and electric cars have batteries that need replacing after 8 - 10 years, a very expensive job - and they lose range with age as well.

I suspect that many people will be sticking to petrol fuelled cars for many years, rather than buy older electric cars, unless the battery has been replaced first.

After a sleepless night with hip and ankle pain, I decided it had to be sooner, rather than later.
My consultant had suggested changing to an automatic a few years ago. I resisted, until I read this thread and a desire to keep my independence and continue driving.
DH suggested I have a look, to stop me complaining, so out we went.

MG ZS Executive, Blue
I was planning to buy an Aygo at some point, but this has bells and whistles and I got a great trade in price . I had no intention of buying a car today! 😁
My present car, One careful lady owner. 😉

Strangely it was my dh’s consultant who rather randomly suggested we bought an automatic car and we thought what a cheek…
He was right. We got our second hand fiesta 10 years ago and are still very happy with it.
I am sure you will be delighted with yours Marydoll. Don’t forget to let us know what you think.

SueDonim Wed 28-Feb-24 22:41:38

Oh, I’m going to be stalking you now, Marydoll! I’m not in the market just yet for a new car but that MG is one that’s caught my eye as a possible next buy.

There’s an MG franchise opened up near us, about a year ago and the number of MGs in the area has just exploded. They’re v popular. Have fun with your new wheels! 🚙

Harris27 Wed 28-Feb-24 22:48:51

Automatic best drive ever. And easier.

Marydoll Wed 28-Feb-24 22:50:12

Sue, the salesman told us exactly the same thing. Sales have exploded here too.
I have always driven Hondas, but I couldn't justify the cost to get all the added extras, when DH does most of the driving now.
I am a gadget geek, so I am delighted.
However, I am quaking at the thought of driving it home. The retail park is a nightmare to negotiate at the best of time and followed by a drive through three towns with zillions of roundabouts and traffic lights. 😱

Marydoll - what a beautiful car, beautiful colour 👌

Thank you. Very sedate for me. My cars are usually quite quirky, but I need to grow up and be sensible, now that I am an old lady.! 🤣

For years we have had a large 4WD auto and a smaller manual.
Unless I’m doing along journey I drive the smaller car.
I changed my manual car last month for a new one and went for the automatic, it’s fantastic, as traffic in our City is getting worse and worse automatic makes far more sense!
I have a manual option for bad weather.
I think manuals will become obsolete.

Always thought driving an automatic was 'cheating'! But we bought a hybrid car which is an automatic and I absolutely love it.

My little runaround is not an automatic and because I drive both cars I sometimes forget which car I'm in. It's OK when I try to change gear in the automatic but not so good when I forget to change gear in the other car grin.

At the moment we can't decide whether to change my car in the next year or so, or just get rid of it and manage with one. But if we do decide to change it then I will definitely go for an automatic.

There is a beautiful new bright yellow electric Renault 5 out complete with a baguette carrier. What more could a girl want? 😂😂😂

It’s an attempt to compete with Chinese built EVs priced at 25k euros that’s around £22k, it’s a city car but up to 250ml range. Renault have been selling the Zoe EV for some years the 5 is a smaller cheaper car.

I bet the Chinese ones haven't got a baguette carrier! 😂😂😂
It would work for a bunch of flowers too.

I have a bright yellow car, sad to see it go! It always raised a smile.

I think we’ll see a lot more Chinese made cars, such as MGs on sale in U.K. very soon. Their manufacturing costs are cheaper and they have the necessary raw materials for batteries readily accessible. Marydoll’s looks very smart.

I think I will now consider an MG when my 14yr old volvo pegs out. They are a reasonable price, look a quality vehicle and have good NCAP ratings and a long warranty. We also have a dealership locally.

Surprised me to know that China is the largest manufacturer of vehicles in the world!!

No 🥖 carrier tho Mamie 😀
