I check my Facebook many, many times during the day. I belong to several groups so I like to see what’s going on. I’ve now decided that I need to limit how much time I spend on it, decided to log in once a day. Any others have the same issue?

I guess all Social Media platforms have their advantages and disadvantages. I became conscious that I was becoming too addicted to Facebook, Instagram, Mumsnet and Gransnet, but I discovered a handy little trick on my IPhone to help cutting down….
Go into Settings-General-Screentime-Set Limits. I set myself one hour daily for those apps in total (well not Gransnet as it’s not an app as far as I know). Your phone screen will block out the app when your time is up.
But you CAN override it😂😂😂

I am a volunteer with a hospital radio station and manage its Facebook and Twitter so am on it daily. Its incredibly useful with linking with community groups and promoting all their events and appeals plus the hospital's, linking them together. I've met such lovely people through it.

There are lots of craft groups and members can be very helpful .
Keeping up with former colleagues, friends in far-flung places etc.

No absolutely not. I find that it is a social cesspool.

Surely it depends who your friends are!!

Community FB groups can attract a lot of troll-like replies but it's best not to join if you feel you can't ignore the posts.

I started on Facebook last May when I began my recovery after 35 years of being housebound and bedbound. It’s been so good and has reconnected me with friends from school after 50 years. I feel fortunate to have it as a documentation of my journey since last May. I check it every few days, as my energy is still very precious and I have to limit my time on all devices! Tv included. I have to say how grateful I am to belong to gransnet and mum net. It’s interesting to read of everyone else’s experience of social media.

It’s the Facebook reels that I find hard to resist! Cute kids, funny cats, rescued dogs and my favourite- haircut transformations! I do think many women become addicted and spend hours staring at their phones instead of living their lives!

I'm afraid that those are the ones that I dislike the most, such time wasters - sorry!

I’m an addict, too! I’ve lost count of how many groups I’m a member of but I find it great that I can chat to people about obscure things that I’m interested in but none of my (few) friends or family are. Especially when I discover something new; I get quite obsessive about newly discovered things and have to find out everything I can about that subject.Last year I asked on an Otter Facebook page how likely it was that I’d seen an otter. I only gave a vague location as many people don't like others and within minutes someone had told me that, yes, it was an otter I’d seen and they told me exactly where I was. I found an insect on my stairs and straight away someone told me what it was. I do need to limit how much time I spend on the internet, though. It’s the first thing I do when I wake up.

sorry, obviously "Porsche"

We've recently bought a TV that is smarter than we are and my husband has discovered YouTube. I think that he prefers these videos to real life or TV programmes - it could be worse I suppose. He particularly likes to watch things about how people have bought super expensive electric cars (Porche etc.) and lost huge amounts of money on them.

I used to visit Facebook at least once a day, but then they stopped sending me notifications and I stopped going to look at them. In some ways it's a shame as there are old friends on there with whom I have no other contact, but I don't miss the irrelevent things that Facebook used to post on my page, nor the "Do you know" type suggestions.
Also I have several friends who post boring pictures of places they know well or causes they follow and Facebook doesn't seem able to block these irrelevent things even if I try to do it.

I’m on fb. If I’m at a loose end I do check social media fairly frequently, including this one! Sometimes I don’t if I’m busy grin

No Facebook for me, WhatsApp serves my needs..

I joined FB in 2017 but rarely used it. I am now reducing my use of it as I was on it too much after I retired in 2021. I still find it useful for local information and a few groups I am in. As for looking at posts from individuals whose lives look so much better than mine, I can do without, affects my mental health a great deal. I now look at it once a day usually in the evening for local information and a couple of lovely groups I am in.
I looked at other social media such as Tik Tok, Instagram etc but got rid very quickly. I love YouTube though but I am not looking at it more than I would say TV programmes which I rarely watch nowadays.
I would say I was getting addicted to FB and decided to curb it in answer to the question and I removed friends, not friends that I picked up along the way. I just have mainly family on there now and my groups.

I’m on it and have been for years… with different groups, clubs etc… Also Admin for many of them…. My Niece has just popped up as posting something… hang on while I check….🤣😂🤣 Woody from Bay City Rollers 67 today… my Niece… ‘Your favourite wasn’t he?’… No it was Eric 🤣😂🤣… Hubby often sits scrolling through, mainly if I’m watching something on TV that he’s not interested in… Although he has an account which I set up when I was playing games… eg FarmVille and needed things. He doesn’t use his, just uses the one I set up for me on both our phones…

I watch haircut transformations on YouTube. 🙂
I've found a blooming marvelous channel.

When I'm at home, Facebook is open permanently in the background. I don't belong to much but follow The Nursery Nurse for a very talented actress, highly recommended for smiles!!

kircubbin2000 Tue 27-Feb-24 11:56:31

I follow a lovely animal rescue site but was upset this morning as they have blocked me after I made a thoughtless comment! Now what can I look at next?

Purplepixie Tue 27-Feb-24 11:52:47

I joined FaceBook after christmas just to try and keep in touch with people in the area where I grew up. Well, it froze me out and kept asking for me to change the password so I gave up. To be honest I just don’t think I am a FB person.

Crazygrandma60 Tue 27-Feb-24 11:45:57

I check Facebook daily, am on a few groups there. But am not addicted to it. What I am addicted to though is YouTube! I spent far too much time on it and have a long "watch later" list on there...

My sister is on there and is causing her a lot of stress. I cannot comment as never joined.

It's a soul vacuum for many. Mental well being is more important than feeling the need to relay your life story via Social Media.
