Pattie Boyd, now 79 is selling her love letters from Eric Clapton.

I feel it’s so sad to have something so personal and once so precious up for auction.

Obviously their relationship was over a long time ago but whilst Eric Clapton is still alive it seems wrong.

Am I too sentimental or do you feel the same?

My question is - who would want to buy someone else's love letters - however famous the writer?

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 29-Feb-24 18:27:51

People who collect these things!

No too personal and very tacky.

Will you be at the RAH gigs this year missdeke?
I’m there for everyone this time 🎸 🎸 🎸 🎸

Nearly every thread about Pattie B has a few comments about how could she leave lovely George for Eric C. George had affairs while she was married to him, but the step too far for her was the affair with Ringo's wife.
Clapton was not the most pleasant guy either. I felt sorry for her, but not sure selling love letters is a good move.

Her letters, her decision.

I have met Patti Maybee and she has the ‘it’ factor. Very sexy, vivacious and she lit up the room with her smile. Prettiness isn’t always attractive if the personality doesn’t match.

I totally agree 👍

First thing I thought is She's skint. Probably isn't skint as in the real skint skint!! But needs some extra dosh for a lifestyle she's accustomed to. I think it's tacky! Maybe if she downgraded her house and lived somewhere nice but cheaper. Boils my blood hmm

She is entitled to live how she wants to live Megslotts and sell the love letters if that's what she wants to do (it seems that it is legal to do so).
Good Luck to her!!

I recall that in a court case over a letter, the judge said the letter belonged to the sender! so meghan markle won her case over letters she wrote to her father that he gave to the press.
perhaps patti should get permission to sell them from eric clapton.................. just saying.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 02-Mar-24 16:48:21

The letters don’t belong to the sender, but the copyright in them does, under UK law. They belong to the recipient.

Btw Clapton has approved of her selling the letters as has been mentioned upthread.

The auction is currently underway at Christie’s.

I've just had a look at Christy's live. She is making a fortune. Good for her.

GBP 2,818,184 less fees. Well done Patti!

I notice that the original artwork for the album cover for Layla, estimated at £60,000, went for almost £2m.

I do think that Beautiful Tonight is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written.

You were wonderful tonight. What a great song that was, I can remember singing along with it every time I heard it. I wish someone had written that song for me but maybe not when I was a married woman.

She asked him first and he was happy for her to sell them.

Why not so judgemental? I think it is the worst possible taste.

Kate1949 Fri 22-Mar-24 14:56:03

Neither George nor Eric treated her well, Clapton especially. Why shouldn't she make a few bob in her later years? I'm sure she has a lot more memorabilia than she is selling.

AuntyTrouble Sun 24-Mar-24 07:07:08

They are hers to do with as she wishes, and this is what she chooses...that simple really. After all this time perhaps they are not sentimental to her?

Clawdy Sun 24-Mar-24 08:30:23

Yes, maybe she thought it was time to move on. I always felt sad she didn't have the children she so wanted - neither George nor Eric C wanted to adopt.

Kate1949 Sun 24-Mar-24 10:04:30

According to her book, while she was married to Clapton, he was on tour and she was at home. He rang her to say he had 'great news'. A woman he was having a fling with was pregnant. Nice man eh?

Clawdy Sun 24-Mar-24 11:10:49

Yes, I read her book. She tried to portray him positively, but he was obviously a very unpleasant man who treated her very badly.

I read her biography a few years ago, in spite of being eulogised in at least three songs, she wasn't really happy in either of those marriages. Eric Clapton in particular was awful to her for much of their time together, so much for Layla and Wonderful Tonight. It was a source of unhappiness that she was unable to have children.

Letters are personal, often the writer is expressing feelings at that moment in time and not for the eyes of the world to judge. I've probably read letters of the long since dead, kings, queens and other well known people but not sure when some of the people involved are still alive.

There are lots of beautiful iconic people from those times, who haven't aged so well, Bridget Bardot for example. Patti Boyd was lovely in her hey day, but they are just mere mortals like the rest of us, it's the passage of time it affects us all to a greater or lesser extent, depending on all the booze and drugs individual genes, it's hardly surprising.

Yes, he treated he appallingly and has admitted so. Maybe the letters may show him in a better light of that time? But I'm in a minority and I don't think it is in bad taste to sell them, they belonged to her.

The British library has loads of personal paperwork surrounding song writing on display too, so it isn't particularly unusual for things to be in the public domain.

Had to look her up. I guess she needs the money (or thinks she does, or just wants it and why not) and if people are willing to buy what she wants to sell, good luck to her.
