My fact of the day is that despite their songs only one of the Beach Boys actually surfed.

If you were to drive a car straight up, into the air, you'd be in outer space in an hour.

How many mph?

If you drive straight up from Wales, do you still have to stick to the 20mph limit?

I’ve just read in Dave Myer’s orbituary in the Times that when he worked as a makeup artist for the BBC he painted the stripe across the singer Adam Ant’s face. I knew you’d all love to know. 🤣

Callistemon21 Sat 02-Mar-24 22:46:23

I'd forgotten that he had been a makeup artist glammagran and didn't know that about the tiger stripe.

Flammable means the same as inflammable.

i don't think that is quite correct.
technically, flammable means able to burn, such as wood or paper, when ignited.
inflammable relates to unstable compounds or materials that may spontaneously combust, without any source of ignition.

The Mayor of Gibraltar is a former Miss World.

That was Kaiane Aldorino Lopez, actually 3 mayors ago. The current mayor is Carmen Gomez, herself a former Miss Gibraltar. There's a pattern in there somewhere...

Oh, thank you, pen50. I’m behind the times as usual!

Indeed HPQ It blew my mind a couple of years ago when I read it.
I’ve used it occasionally in conversation to illustrate the magnitude of difference.
I seem to have an empty seat next to me quite often these days.
Funny that…
🤣

As do I as I sit musing, looking at the scampo on the end of my fork ....grinlonging for someone to come along and ask what I am eating

That really made me laugh! On a dreary day which happens to be the anniversary of the death of my mum six years ago. I miss her so much, especially these days with what we are confronted with at home. So a big thank you! Laughter really is the best medicine.

flowers for you Urmstongran.

Jeremy Hunt is the nephew of Virginia Bottomley.

Ooh, and of Peter Bottomley too presumably?

Tizliz Sun 03-Mar-24 14:00:52

a muse is also somewhere that hawks are kept

Elegran Sun 03-Mar-24 14:26:54

More often spelt mews. They were places where hawks were "mewed up" (confined in cages) when they were moulting and vulnerable. In London, stables for the royal horses were built on what had previously been the Mews for royal hawks and which continued to be called the Royal Mews. This led to all similar horse stables in back lanes behind houses being called mews. They still are, though most are now converted into bijou residences.

Tizliz Sun 03-Mar-24 15:42:51

Yes, I misspelt that 🙄

I think that is one of those stories without foundation which has gained momentum until everyone thinks it's true.

Callistemon21 Sun 03-Mar-24 16:44:36

Even more useless information:

However, Virginia Bottomley is related to Peter Jay, son-in-law of James Callaghan and Tristram Hunt, former Labur MP who are both her cousins.

Clawdy Sun 03-Mar-24 17:54:37

Florence Nightingale was born in Italy - that's why she was called Florence!

It still not true though!

Yes, his father was an Admiral. DH served with him at one time in the 1960s before he was an Admiral.

Callistemon21 Sun 03-Mar-24 19:53:29

I meant before his father became an Admiral, not DH 😁

Urmstongran Sun 03-Mar-24 20:01:48

Calli 🤣

Cousin to VB then it seems …. not nephew.

“ Until her retirement from open politics, Virginia Bottomley, had been the Conservative MP for South West Surrey. In 2005, her cousin Jeremy Hunt inherited her constituency (not quite Queen's Crawley) and stepped into her shoes becoming the new MP. Virginia was then ennobled and became Baroness Bottomley of Nettlestone. She now lobbies on behalf of the private health sector and was a director of BUPA between 2007-2013.”

Callistemon21 Sun 03-Mar-24 20:02:59

No, he is not related even if that report says he is.

Callistemon21 Sun 03-Mar-24 20:03:49

She is related to Tristram Hunt, ex-MP and Peter Jay.

Callistemon21 Sun 03-Mar-24 20:06:00

It took DH a bit longer. Then what happened? He ended up in the Argy Bargy Bar 😯

Wooly mammoths were still mooching around when the pyramids were being built.

PamelaJ1 Mon 04-Mar-24 04:23:19

Cars in Australia don’t have fog lights.
They use their hazards instead.
