If police procedural crime thrillers are more to your taste, do try the DCI Rachel Hart series, starting with Little Girl Missing, followed by What He Did and then Why She Died. They can be read as standalone novels, but there is an underlying thread running through the three books which makes more sense if read in sequence. By J G Roberts.

The Stuart MacBride novels set in Aberdeen are very good, esp if you know Aberdeen at all. Love Logan Macrae and his wickedly funny female boss!

Have you tried JDKirk whose novels are based in a beautiful part of Scotland , or Alex Smith who also writes a nice murder . These are the only books I read . I have a Kindle and pay monthly and for this subscription can read thousands of books for free . It’s well worth the subscription to Kindle Unlimited.

Dorothy L Sayers Lord Peter Wimset are well written and a great read
Frances Brody has a series of novels set in Yorkshire in the interwar years with a lady detective, easy to read and well researched

Grannynise I've read the Lindsay Davis Falco books and enjoyed them. A bit different as detectives go because there is no tech in ancient Rome 😃

I've just read three books in quick succession by Kate Charles. All three were in the Lucy Kingsley and David Middleton-Brown series. All were set in the Church of England and all three were page-turners. I'm hoping to find more in this series. Clever plots with red herrings. I'm now catching up on sleep after reading in bed until the early hours, couldn't put them down.

I feel so guilty going through this thread and noting authors new to me without adding one. I dont think anyone has mentioned the Japanese female detective Umika Wada written by Robert Goddard First one is called The Fine Art of Invisible Detection. The second is The Fine Art of Uncanny Predictions. The Japanese names can be a bit confusing but these books are so different. Both these books are available in either large print or on CD from the local library.

I'm enjoying 'Miss. Scarlet and The Duke', set in London (it helps that he's rather delish and has a sexy Scottish accent, too).
There's 'Wycliffe', always worth seeing the old ones again.
And my mind has gone blank as I'm now thinking of egg n chips, thanks to another post 😆😆

Celia Fremlin’s ‘novels of suspense’ - a brilliant writer who lived in Hampstead.

British Library Crime Classics were my standby read during Covid. I used to enjoy scandi noir but it is now too gruesome for me. I’m going to try aeries called Lady Fan by Grace someone or someone Grace. They are free on kindle unlimited. .

Ellis Peters’ Cadfael series, he is a a medieval monk who is based in Shrewsbury Abbey but travels around Shropshire and beyond.
