"Jim Stringer Railway Detective" is by Andrew Martin not Edward Marton, very good.

There's Hereford-set "Merrily Watkins" series by Phil Rickman, she's a priest/exorcist so you have that dimension as well as the crime.
Anna Maxwell Martin portrayed her on TV but they squashed several books into each episode, not half as good as the books.

Harlan Coben, but he is an American writer! He’s very prolific, some are better than others. He wrote the series Only Lie to me Once which was on Netflix I think, which I enjoyed.

Julia Chapman her Sales Detective Agency series set in Yorkshire.
Kate Rhodes her series set on Scilly Isles - Murder mysteries investigated by a policeman detective based there.
Jo Nesbo his Harry Hole detective books set in Norway.
Lee Child - Jack Reacher books.

Elly Griffiths, set in Norfolk and Brighton, Linda Stratmann, historical woman detective set in Brighton, Anne Coates, see in London.

As Ailidh mentioned historical crime, I'd throw in Ellis Peters for her list. Her books are the CADFAEL stories, which got turned into (excellent) TV episodes with Derek Jacobi and a well-chosen cast to bring them to life. That doesn't detract from the books though.

Set in Dorset but she has more series set in Birmingham, Cumbria and London and all are spin offs and connected

This is the Railway Detective series I love. I hadn't heard of Jim Stringer but I'll look out for him. 🙂

Love the Lindsay Davis books, surprised they haven't been televised, although I think they have on the radio. Absolutely agree Gary Oldman is a great Jackson Lamb, watched all the Slow Horses, looking forward to series 4.

Cannot fail with the master Colin Dexter Morse books. I like James Oswald set in Edinburgh and Quintin Jardine set in Edinburgh too . Jardin's books best read in order also James Oswald his are a bit different but a good read . I second Louise Penny ( not British but Canada ) and Donna Leon ( Venice ) .

Just read Rob Rinder’s first book ‘The trial’ excellent. 👍

I love crime fiction too. Ian Rankin is one of my favourites .

Simon McCleave does a couple of excellent series based in Wales. My favourite features Ruth Hunter and it’s best to start with ‘The Snowdonia Killings’. H L Marsay has a fantastic series featuring DCI Shadow set in York and I have just recently discovered Marion Todd who has a really great series set in St Andrews

Doug Johnstones series on “The Skelfs”, set in Edinburgh, a family of female undertakers/private investigators. Best read in order as there’s a strong theme runs through them. Wonderfully, darkly, comic.

arnaldur indridason is an Icelandic crime writer who written quite a lot of excellent crime murder mysteries.
They are translated into English and very readable.

I enjoy trying to understand a country so different and would love to visit some time.
One priblem I have is that the place name are unpronounceable for me and I have difficulty remembering them but I still enjoy the storytelling.

Thanks Nanamar for starting this thread. I have been busy taking notes and here are some of my favourites: Craig Robertson, Simon Becket, Denzil Merik and C M Ewen. I have many more and have read many recommended above - just wish my recall was better!! I must admit I am drawn to Scottish related locations and plots!!

Thanks for all the suggestions! Can’t wait to start some of these that are new to me. Ian Rankin, Val McDermid, Elly Griffiths, Ann Cleeves, and Peter May are among my favorites and glad to see others enjoy them as well. Also enjoyed all the Gamache novels by Louise Penny - interesting insights about Canada.
