Generational stereotypes (Trigger Warning for Jeremy Vine!)

I was blissfully unaware of Vine before he took over Eggheads from Dermot Murnaghan who I really liked. I went from being a regular viewer to never watching as the combination of CJ, Chris Hughes and Vine was just too much. Since then I have avoided anything with Vine in it. However, I like his brother and find him very funny.

Can't be bothered to watch anything with JV, so annoying.

Can't stand Jeremy Vine. Nothing but shouty (probably not a word) sensationalism.

I was born in December 1964, so very much on the cusp between the boomers and Generation X. I would say that at best these names refer to life experiences. In this context, my experiences would match far more with someone born between, say, 1965 and 1972 than with those born later in the seventies, but my life experiences would also be far more similar with those born between around 1958 and 1964 than those born in the late forties/early fifties. That being said, I have friends of all ages - differing life experiences makes things interesting, as we see here on Gransnet. I have read that there were two baby booms: the first one is the one most people think of from 1945 until the early fifties. The second was actually larger than the first and is my own age group 1958-1964, with my year, 1964, having the largest birth rate of all.

My children are in two different generations according to these categories, despite being brought up together and born only a couple of years apart. This tends to prove it's a bit stupid.

Interestingly, when I was young I always thought Baby Boomers were those born up to 1955, mainly those born after their parents returned from the war. I think those born in the postwar years experienced a different childhood compared to those born in the 1960s so lumping them all together feels odd.

It's all a load of contrived rubbish, designed by those with a feeling of resentment fuelled by their perceived notions of Baby Boomers "having it all".

It's taken off from there with more labels for different age groups.

Agree 100%. Cant be arrised with the woke/transgender/cancel culture rubbish. Those of us born during WWII are not boomers. We are the so called Silent generation. No one, even my worst enemy, could accuse me of being silent.

The reason Matthew looked down on breeders was because he'd been through years of IVF which destroyed his first marriage and clearly left him feeling very bitter. He succeeded with his second wife and wanted a quieter life I believe.

I stopped watching shortly after Matthew left and tbh even he was driving me nuts towards the end of his run. Jeremy Vine is a self opinionated moron in a similar league to Richard Madeley they both foist their opinions down others throats.

Rarely watch these sort of programmes as guaranteed to make my blood boil! ‘Question Time’ is impossible for me with their carefully chosen audience which they still insist is ‘representative’! I don’t like this lumping the generations into various groups. It makes far too many generalisations about people who are actually individuals with their own hopes and dreams, successes and failures and unique ways of thinking. But that’s what government and media LOVE isn’t it? Just like the former USSR we are all considered en masse rather than the individuals we are. A marketing dream and an Orwellian style nightmare. Individualism is well and truly being crushed. We should stand up (and out!) for it before it’s too late!

I’m in the minority but love Jeremy Vine. A lot of these debates are tongue in cheek and I’m stunned at how upset people are getting! The easy answer is to turn it off/over.

Intergenerational division is a ploy to distract from government failure. While we are all at each other’s throats, blaming each other for all that ails, we’re not watching too closely what the government is up to.

I think that did happen, Buttonjugs, but I thought he left for another reason. Was it for 'outing' John Leslie as the man accused of raping Ulrika Jonsson? I could be wrong, but I seem to remember that he left all of a sudden, and the 'being with his wife' story didn't ring true.

Regardless, I thought his show was livelier and less irritating than JV's. MW could be annoying at times, but so can anyone on a show like that if you don't agree with them. He didn't make it all about himself though (or not so obviously), and he didn't constantly try to look 'cool'.

I think Storm does a great job. She's very even-handed, and more assertive than Jezza when it comes to refereeing her guests.

I like discussion shows, as if they are done well they show what the zeitgeist is, and what the public think about what's in the media. My favourite is Any Answers (although again, I sometimes want to throw things at the radio), but the trick is to let the presenter be a facilitator, not a participant, and JV can't bear to step back. It's very obvious what he thinks, particularly when it comes to things like pensions, and that is infuriating given that he earns about £750k a year. How can he possibly know what it's like for Mr or Mrs Average?

Actually, no.
My parents went through tough times and I'm sure my grandparents did too but I knew that.

We have seen better time, more peaceful and more prosperous, but fought for by our parents and grandparents.
