Generational stereotypes (Trigger Warning for Jeremy Vine!)

Jeremy Vine is currently discussing 'Generation Zee' and whether they are workshy. He irritates me at the best of times, but on this he's utterly infuriating. He is obsessed with not being a 'Boomer' as he was born in 1965, which is on the cusp of Boomer and Gen X, and is always banging on about who belongs in which group. I think he believes it makes him seem younger than he is.

The whole thing is a marketing invention anyway, not a real 'thing'. How can there be significant differences between someone born in 1965 (Gen X), and 1964 (Boomer), and not between people born in 1965 and 1979 (both Gen X) or between people born in 1945 and 1964 (both Boomers)? It makes no sense. Some US scales include 'Generation Jones', or 'Boomers 2' which splits the Boomer generation between those born between 1945-54 and 1955-64. That makes a bit more more sense, but still ignores sex, social class, geographical differences (and luck, which IMO has the greatest influence on life chances).

I've switched off JV, as there is a ranting young woman who's representing 'Gen Zee' and is shouting down Nina Myscow, who is being very calm and reasonable about it, and I can't bear it any more (I may be a bit stressed grin).

So, having got that off my chest, what are your views on these supposed generational differences? Is it broadly true that Millennials are workshop, Gen Z are narcissistic, Boomers are selfish and spoilt, and so on, or is it a load of tosh?

Doodledog Wed 10-Apr-24 10:15:44

Autocorrect doesn't like 'workshy', but obviously I didn't mean 'workshop' grin

Cant stand Vine ,bring back Matthew Wright I say or even hand the show to Alexis Conran .I rarely watch it now as his "opinions" which he's not supposed to have ,but does, irritate the life out of me .Horrible man who has no idea on ordinary life.....guess thats why he nips about on his unicycle ,shows how superior he THINKS he is !

Doodledog Wed 10-Apr-24 12:37:00

I preferred Matthew Wright, too.

I think that generalising about 'generations' is responsible for a lot of the 'divide and rule' way we have been governed for years now. It works both ways, of course, with a lot of younger people believing that pensioners are entitled and greedy, and a lot of older people thinking that young ones are entitled and lazy. I think that there are entitled, greedy and lazy people of all ages (and people of all ages who are none of those things), but don't think that the year in which you are born has anything to do with that.

I think that from a marketing perspective it can be useful to consider points of reference for different age groups. Those ads for funeral plans and wills are a case in point - they now use Slade and bikers to appeal to the upcoming older generation (Boomers 2/Generation Jones, I suppose), and the ones where the women listen with bated breath to the advice of the parsnip-growing chap to take out an over-50 plan seem to finally be being phased out, probably as people more likely to consider taking out the plans won't identify with that scenario. That's not the same as assuming common personality traits or generational world views though.

I haven't really watched JV, I gather he's irritating. There was a time when I watched MW, and enjoyed the show, but he could be a bit weird and overly grouchy at times, nevertheless he was ousted from his own show for the most spurious of reasons, of which I can't remember the finer detail now.

I'm a bit ignorant about Generation Whatever, this is something I find myself asking my children how they're defined in that respect. I know I'm a Boomer, part of the bad lot demographic Personally I don't like the cranking up of what I perceive to be inter- generational grudges. I do remember, with much amusement I might add, a comment on MN an irate 30 something I believe, complaining about older people cluttering up the high street on Saturdays, when they've had all week to do that I was kind of this shock and this grin in equal measures.

I cannot stand Jeremy Vine. Sanctimonious twit! He is pig ignorant.

Theexwife Wed 10-Apr-24 13:26:55

Can't stand Jeremy Vine.

Naming a generation is just a simpler way of reference, better than saying those born between 1946-1964 etc every generation encounter circumstances that have an effect on how they live.

I don’t like him either - but I switched on his radio show in the car this morning when I was on my way home, and he made me laugh when he said, with no irony, we will be back after the next song to talk about ‘living next to a pig farm that smells’!

I don't understand this whole Gen X, Y, Z stuff, let alone Gen Zee which is an entirely new one on me. People are people; albeit some things (like creaky knees!) are more likely with my Gen - insert appropriate letter here given that I was born in 1955. Is there a definitive list somewhere for which Gen applies to which age? Were there ever Gens A to W?

Allsorts Wed 10-Apr-24 16:40:55

I can’t listen to the man. He’s 65 not a spring chicken.
Don’t understand GenZee or Boomer, we are what we are, why does everyone have to be stereo typed, we are individuals.

This is the best I can find.

Vine is 58 I believe - he'll probably sue you for saying he's 65 grin. It maddens me that he is so keen to distance himself from 'Boomers' and is always pointing out that his co-host Storm is a millennial. She is so much more balanced than he is on pretty much everything.

I agree about the knees, and that we are individuals. If other groups were stereotyped in the way age groups are, there would be uproar.

Hear hear.

People are people.

How would he like to be lumped together. Perhaps he would?!

Doodledog Wed 10-Apr-24 17:06:55

He wants to be lumped in with the Gen X lot, as he clearly thinks they are more interesting. Vine is a pillock, but I'm more interested in whether anyone thinks the generalisations have a basis in reality. I think it is a flawed concept outside of marketing, but others may well feel differently.

Does anyone actually like Vine.

Ziplok Wed 10-Apr-24 17:35:41

In my view, Doodledog, it’s a load of tosh.

I’m not a fan of Mr Vine at all.

Doodledog Wed 10-Apr-24 17:35:48

I don't know what the viewing figures are for his show, but the audience must have a fair number of pensioners and Boomers, so I don't know why he's so disrespectful to them all the time.

No intelligent adult: awful pompous man.

JaneJudge Wed 10-Apr-24 17:44:15

i find it all unnecessary. we need to learn from one another

I am from the old brigade, born during world war 11 and think what is happening in the world today with all this woke, transgender, Gen Z, baby boomer etc. etc. is a load of codswollop.

CanadianGran Wed 10-Apr-24 17:52:19

Well, the named generations are used for marketing mostly I think. But call them what you will, there are certain stereotypes for age groups, for instance family size cars will be marketed to the 30-45 age groups, and while sports cars used to be marketed to young adults, they are now selling mostly to empty-nesters in the late 40's to mid 50's.

I think we all carry generalizations about certain groups whether we admit it or not. They don't have to be negative generalizations.

Callistemon21 Wed 10-Apr-24 17:54:15

I daren't say, apparently being one of the Silent Generation 🤐

Doodledog Wed 10-Apr-24 17:55:49

I said from the start that they work for marketing grin.

But they are being used way beyond that these days. The Telegraph had a headline this week about how Gen Z don't want to work, and we are always hearing about how Boomers are selfishly living in our own houses and not passing them on to the young.

Shhh - you're supposed to be Silent.

argymargy Wed 10-Apr-24 17:57:16

I reached Peak Vine Irritation today when he announced that the next discussion topic (as mentioned by PP) was "Have you ever lived so close to a pig farm that it made your nose bleed?" I was reminded of when Jimmy Young used to do the lunchtime show and how much less hysterical it was. He used to have the editor of The Grocer on every week talking about the price/availability of vegetables... Ah happy days.

Smileless2012 Wed 10-Apr-24 17:58:29

It's a load of tosh and all it does is create division, there's good and bad in every generation.
