I look at both online. It's easy to avoid the celeb parts.

We have the DM on Saturdays for the TV programmes. And Monty Don 🙂

I happened to catch a few moments of Pointless Celebrities. The contestants showed themselves very ignorant.

But I bet they're much wealthier than most of us!
And they are raising money for charity, although the BBC should be ashamed of the pittance they pay out on that show compared to others!

Intellectual snobbery at its best ( or worst, depending on your POV). I think my Dad used to get the DM and he was a pretty smart cookie. Mind you, he was a staunch Conservative.

I realise some on here just want to have a go at the DM and try to prove how superior they are as they read other papers but TV is just as bad!

If I am ironing I put the TV on and most daytime progs feature celebs, most of whom I have never heard of or have no interest in. Same with chat shows in the evenings. Wall to wall celeb nonsense.

The last couple of weeks has seen a fair few miles of column inches - even in The Guardian - occupied by two overblown celebrities in particular: Taylor Swift and Jon Bon Jovi.

The first is a run-of-the-mill singer who's very prettily polished and the second is a tired-out rocker having a Last Hurrah.

Both well over-hyped and plastered about all over the place but I suppose their PR people have a living to make......

And as for 'actors' who get parts/fame because of their famous parents- Dakota Johnson springs to mind.No acting talent whatsoever, and whomever gave her the starring role in the 50 shades films wants sacking.

Was acting a requirement for that rubbish 🤷‍♀️

I have been watching the London Marathon today, and there were many celebrities pushing themselves to the limit. Notably from Eastenders, (as another thread is talking about the soap), actors Jay and Honey who were running for a brain tumour charity in memory of the fictional Lola. Apparently they had already run it in 2019 for Dementia in memory of Barbara Winddor. And I checked, Emma has a degree from Surrey University.

Taylor Swift may be hard working and reasonably dressed (unlike others) so in that respect a good role model. But I'm not sure about her songs, as the latest double album is apparently full of bitterness and involves f-words. She's no angel.

Adele was always wailing about ex-partners, but I do not like this latest fad which is to vent a lot of nastiness towards ex-partners. And as I said, Raye is another who does this (very popular in the UK even if you haven't heard of her). Some very hateful and unpleasant lyrics there, and plenty of f-words and drug references.

Life isn't all sweetness and light - why shouldn't music reflect that?

Not a particular fan of theirs, but I do like a few of their tracks and I like to keep in touch with new music, that's all.

I think Taylor Swift is being written about a lot apropos of her new album and the speculation on who the songs are about. Incidentally I'd heard of The 1975 and knew who Matt Healy is before he had a brief fling with TS. Personally I don't object to her, she's achieved a great level of success through her own efforts, she appears to be her own person, I can't imagine her being paraded around by Kanye West for example. IMO I would see her as a far better role model for girls and women than the Kardashian crew who trade on their manufactured looks rather than any particular talent.

I know some will say 'read a better class of newspaper' but the papers this morning may as well be renamed the Taylor Swift Diaries. I don't enjoy politics and like to read light hearted news but I'm sick of reading about the Beckhams flaunting their wealth, the Kardashians latest child, who's nepo baby is succeeding at what, etc 😠

Perhaps assume others are interested and just read other bits? I don't read boring celebrity/Royal Family bits, except on GN, plenty here.

My GGC like Taylor Swift, no bother, someone else will come along soon enough. She's typically dressed to cover herself well, pleasant looking by today's standards. Could be far worse, I suppose.

Benedict's father is Timothy Carlton (Timothy Carlton Congdon Cumberbatch) also an actor. His parents met in 1970 whilst filming A Family at War and acted together in The Lotus Eaters and in Sherlock where they played Benedict's (Sherlock's) parents! So he is definitely a nepo baby but has proved beyond doubt he has shedloads of acting ability. They aren't all talentless wastrels. 😂
