distance - km and time! As in 30 minute drive.
Short lengths are mostly imperial. I'm 5'4"
cooking - cups and teaspoons - no weights ( I don't have a kitchen scale)
liquid volume - both! pints of beer (16 oz), litres of milk.
Weights - mixed again! my weight is in lbs, we don't use stones. My workout weights are in pounds. I work in a field that uses metric tonnes. I buy deli meat by the grams, but apples are sold by the pound.

It's so confusing... but we are used to it!

I think what Ex-Dancer was saying was that dress material is sold by the metre but ths width is still in imperial measurements.

I used to do a lot of dressmaking. Now we buy material by the meter - but its 48" wide

It reminds me of when DH went to buy some wood for the trellis and asked for 5" x 2" wood.
The man at the builders' merchants said "it comes in metric measurements now".
DH asked for three metres and the man said "Oh, we sell it by the foot".

@vegansrock, sewing is tiresome in this respect. My beautiful Pfaff Quilt Ambition 2.0 sewing machine has the usual grooves showing seam allowances and they are in eighths of an inch, whereas the sewing patterns I tend to use are in centimetres. Annoying.

Knitting needles too Saracyn I know the metric ones make more sense as they go from narrowest #1 to widest#12 but the old ones are measured from narrowest #12 to widest #1!!
They are roughly the same size somewhere in the middle.
If you happen to buy vintage knitting patterns, as I do, and don't have the old needles, chances are your finished garment will fit nobody. 😉

I haven't talked through all the responses, but I'll start by saying that 5 inches is 12.5cm, not 25cm, that's 10 inches, and I don't know anyone that could walk in 10 inch or 25cm heels.
Also, 6ft is 183cm, not a straight 180 for some reason.
I am 56 and was lucky enough to be educated using cm, metres, litres, kilos etc, whereas all my family and friends (who didn't go to my school) were still using imperial measurements, so I very quickly learnt how to convert in both directions.

I have never taken to decimalisation at all for weights and measures, centigrade and Farenheit and kilometers and miles. but when handling money I find it extremely easy.

I still, after all these years, when something on Amazon is given in cms. I ask my Alexa unit, how many inches is so and so cms. Alexa spends all her time giving me weights and measures advice especially when I bought a new air fryer and everything was in Farenheit. My smartphone and computer have all being amended to state the old measurements.

RE: butter I don’t know how it is sold in Britain, but in the US it’s sold in one pound packages (16 ounces).

Each package has four 1/4 pound sticks (4 ounces). Each stick has tablespoon markings on the wrapper too. It is perfect for baking/cooking for exact measurements.

You can also buy it in a one pound block but measuring out what you need would be harder.

You are right Harmony I used some poor examples to show how useless I was at conversion.
I don't know my own height in cm although I believe it's on my passport.

When reporting crimes, do the heights of the suspects or victims get a mention? I know they say "well built" when they mean large and always ages.
