What were the first ever records that you bought and when?

We had a red Dansette record player which had cost £24 and the first records I bought were pre decimalisation and cost just over 6 shillings for a 45 rpm. You could get 3 records for under £1 and I bought Mony Mony by Tommy James, 1 2 3 by Len Barry and Downtown by Petula Clark. My sister and I had a party at home, and played these 3 records over and over all evening, as they were all we had. Great times.

Mine went by the glorious name of “I do like bread and butter”
Can’t remember who sang it but the lyrics continued with
“I do like toast and jam.
That’s what my baby gives me.
I’m her loving’ man”

Runaway - Del Shannon. I liked all the American singers - Roy Orbison, Gene Pitney, etc. Also loved Tamla Mowtown. Although I was born in Liverpool I was never a great Beatles fan.

First single bought was Something’s Burning by Kenny Rodgers when I was 14. I loved that gravelly voice!
First heard Bridge over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel on The Old Grey Whistle Test when I was just 17. Loved it then and love it still - I’m now 71!

I got a tape recorder on my 13th birthday and bought David Cassidy album Cherish.

What fond memories you are bringing back! Every single Dylan record I could lay my hands on and every Beatles single . Twist and shout was worn out through being played over and over on my dansette.

What's behind the Green Door by Frankie Vaughan. Or am I making the song title up - It's so long ago, back in the 50s!

Early 1968, I was eleven and had been given a Dansette for Christmas. I bought three Monkees' singles with my Christmas money, Pleasant Valley Sunday, Daydream Believer and Alternate Title. I was deeply, passionately, and all-consumingly in love with Peter Tork.

I didn’t own a record player so I had to be extra nice to my big sister so I could play it on her record player !

1968. Aged 13, I bought my first ever single, "Move in a little closer, baby" by Harmony Grass. (Later the song was a hit for Mama Cass.) I played it over and over again till my Father said he would cut the plug off my record player if I didn't stop!

The first 45 I bought was Lily the Pink and then Jeepster by T rex. I was another Marc Bolan fan

I remember buying ex-juke box singles with the centre missing. There were little plastic attachments to make them playable on a record player. Two of the first records I bought were See Emily Play by Pink Floyd and Paranoid by Black Sabbath. Also T Rex, Tamla Motown, Rolling Stones, Wizzard, Slade, Steeleye Span. I think the first LP I bought was Ziggy Stardust. I also collected all the James Bond soundtrack LPs.
Sorry, can’t stand the Beatles - very over-rated. 🙄

Very first record was “ Anyone who had a heart, “ by Cilla Black. I loved pretending to be Cilla, singing into my bedroom mirror with my hairbrush microphone!

1950s "Green Door" byFrankie Vaughan; "Side Saddle" by Russ Conway, a pianist. Winifred Atwell, a Trinidadian pianist, was also popular in the 1950s.

First single was without You by Harry Neilsson and album was Propaganda by Sparks.

I bought singer twinkle song Terry when I was about 13-14 that was in the early 80s 20yrs later I was riding my own motorbike lol
