What were the first ever records that you bought and when?

Christmas 1964 when I was 9. I had my Dansette record player from my parents and bought the singles with some Christmas money.

Does anyone else still have theirs?

My son has mine he is a collector of radios etc. so he still cherishes it . It was blue and bought in 1962.

Grayling1, I think Shrine on the Second Floor was from the film Expresso Bongo. I remember being very indignant at Laurence Harvey`s character calling Cliff a snotty nosed kid!

My brother made our record player (he’d have been about 15) and the first record I bought was ‘Why’ by Anthony Newley. I think it was 1958, I was 11. I think records cost about 6s 3d then, we used to get most of them from Woolworths.

My first record bought with my own money was daydream believer by the Monkees . My sister and I loved the tv show . I think I was about 10 or 11

Hellogirl1 - having grown up and widened my taste in music I think I might agree with Laurence Harvey and I can safely say that was the only Cliff Richard I ever bought whereas I have followed Laurence and enjoyed his films especially "Butterfly Eight" with Elizabeth Taylor. Going off piste here but that's what a thread like this does to me often!!!!!

I think my older brother bought me my first record and I think it was Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

I Feel Fine - The Beatles 1964. I still have it along with approximately 150 singles.

The first single I bought was Maggie May. Actually my best friend at the time went halves on it, so we jointly owned it. She'd have it one week and me the next. Seemed perfectly normal at the time.

The next single I bought was Jeepster by T Rex which was mine, all mine! I rather hoped Marc Bolan might be mine too.

After that I graduated to LPs and bought Led Zeppelin 4 followed by Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon and Carol King Tapestry.

I eventually gave exclusive ownership of Maggie May to my friend and, 50 years later, I sometimes wonder if she still has it. I foolishly lent Zep 4 to someone at a boozy party and never saw it again. My ex husband snaffled Dark Side of the Moon when we split up but I've still got Carol.

I was given a red record player and the first record I bought was Diana by Paul Anka.

I gave most of my early records to the first Blue Peter Great Bring and Buy Sale ☹

I happily played it on my portable record player in my bedroom. I locked my door, needle got stuck…..I fell asleep….my mother was not happy the next morning. Key was confiscated!! Happy memories.

It was 1975 and purchased from a small independent store.

I remember buying an Arethra Franklin LP and playing it over and over again .
I loved her voice , the blues and later jazz .
I also loved classical music and bought many records .

I actually meant do posters still have their first records, but that’s fantastic that your Dansette is still loved .
I wish I had mine but I replaced it with a Sony Stereo as soon as I started work and had saved up.

The first record I bought was Danny and the Juniors At the Hop. I must admit I still love it and still have to dance to it. Dad bought a record player in the late 50s and bought us the top 10 that week on 78s! Perry Como Magic Moments, Reet Petite, Paul Anka Diana.

My DF bought a record player for the family for Christmas 1963. My DB and I shared our pocket money and bought Love Me Do. We bought most of the Beatles singles and others by the Stones and other big 60s bands.
We bought singles as albums were too expensive. My first album was a Stones one, Aftermath, as a Christmas present.

My first was David Whitfield singing Cara Mia. Loved it. I was such a square! My Granny lived with us at the time and hated it. She called him the squealer. She was much more 'with it' than me.

And Liberace.
Of course, they used the radiogram which had a much better tone than my Dansette.

My mum loved David Whitfield and I can still hum Cara Mia as David Whitfield was my first favourite singer too, yes very square even in those burgeoning rock and roll days

Bad Penny Blues, Humphrey Littleton. I was 15, 1955.

First single I bought was Albatross by Fleetwood Mac, I was fifteen. Up till then I recorded on my Dad’s reel to reel from records borrowed from friends.

Billy don’t be a hero as a single I think Paperlace still have it with a bustop label LP was Donny Osmond I think around 72/3

My first single was Adam Faith's "What do you want?"

I loved the Small Faces and saw them at The Cellar Club in Kingston on Thames. I used to go there a lot. Does anyone remember it?

The Night has a Thousand Eyes by Bobby Vee Rubber Ball on the flip side
Came out 1962 so I was 14/15 and as it was the only record I owned until I saved up for another one played it on a loop.
The pleased my mum and dad no end😂

Hey Girl don't bother me by the Tams 1971....I was 11 years old and played it on my parents Stereogram!

I was 10 in 1975 and bought a Everly Brothers double record set.
