What were the first ever records that you bought and when?

Does anyone else remember Woolworths selling copies by unknown artists of the big hits? I remember having Lonely Pup & My Old Man's a Dustman so it would have been 1960.

I Want You Back by the Jackson 5. It was cheap as it was an ex-juke box record without a middle - I had to buy the middle insert bit separately! My sister-in-law had given me her old Dansette record player a week or so earlier.

Elizabethan Reggae, Liquidator - my Dad used to shout up the stairs, "Turn that thumping off!!"

Saw them in concert twice, not long after. They were really good.
The Hollies were their back up band for the first concert, absolutely awful.

I too got a Dansette record player one Christmas. Dad bought Sloop John B by The Beach Boys to go with it - my first record, although strictly speaking, I didn’t buy it myself.
I had a varied taste in music and still have.

Oh yes, it was 1967 called "Build he up buttercup" by The Foundations. 7/6d (around 15p today) and my allowance for the entire week.

Oh Cossy my music choices are still hugely varied. Reggae through to anything bar ABBA lol.

It’s great isn’t it to have such wife and varied taste, I love reggae, some pop music, some classical music, Frank Sinatra from my youth and so much more!

The oldest single which I still possess, is I’d Rather Go Blind by Chicken Shack featuring Christine Perfect (McVie). I bought it after a breakup when I was 16.

The first single I bought was My Boy Lollipop by Millie (?). The first albums (I bought them together) were A Meal I Can Shake Hands With In The Dark by Pete Brown and the Battered Ornaments, and second, Wasa Wasa by the Edgar Broughton Band. Both Progressive Rock.

My first record was Lonnie Donegan's Battle of New Orleans, which was an old fashioned 78rpm. Later I remember buying every Cliff record and also those of the Shadows. I used to buy the rarer ones through the NME paper, from money earned for my newspaper round. Others I recall were Little White Bull, Cathy's Clown, and The Three Bells, which was damaged and always stuck on 'the little congregation-gation-gation!

I had very eclectic tastes (& still do!) in music having albums by T Rex, Rod Stewart, Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper and The Partidhe Family!!

The first two vinyl singles I bought were
“long haired lover from Liverpool” by little Jimmy Osman and “knock three times on the ceiling” by Dawn, back in the early 70’s

Everytime I hear that piano concerto it takes me back to a Xmas Eve when we were driving from Fort William to get the ferry to Skye to spend Xmas and the new year.

One of the first was Rod Stewart Maggie May, I was 12 when I got my first record player, my sister had one for 2 years before that but wouldn’t let me use it.

I saved up 6/8d in 1961 and bought my first record - Billy Fury, Halfway to Paradise

Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No1 and Rachmaninov on the back. Electric Light Orchestra Out of Blue. Up until then I played my brothers records which everything the Beatles produced which is strange because I cant stand their stuff now.

1962, Joe Brown ‘A Picture of you’ I was staying with my Aunt and Uncle, they took me to Lee on Solent to a record shop, we also bought a box of Gramaphone needles as I had to play it on their wind up Gramaphone! If I wound it up enough I could almost hear the song all the way through…..
By the time my parents bought a Dansette the record wasn’t playable.

IIRC it was Love Me Do (Beatles)

One I really wanted for Christmas, dropped loads of hints but never got it, was Telstar. (6/8d was a lot to me then, esp. near Christmas, or I’d have bought it myself!).
