It’s an interesting question, humour may well be different just as accents are.Having only lived in the South I can’t compare.
Being friendly is another thing altogether tho and I find people who smile and those who don’t wherever I go.

I’m sorry you’ve found that ordinarygirl I live in the far south and have great banter with all sorts of people, including the bin men, shop assistants and my GP, to name but a few. I’ve not lived anywhere else in the UK as an adult, so can’t comment on other areas.
So, I think you’ve been unfortunate, don’t give up, a smile, chat, or a joke helps everyone’s day pass better, even if they, or you, are working.

Smiling and being friendly is one thing, but joking especially with strangers can be subjective and consequently fraught with potholes.
Your joke may come across as 1) not very funny 2) patronising 3) offensive 4) unwelcome “banter” - a shop assistant is there to do a job not to be your comedy club audience
