It’s one of those nights

The sort where the gremlins are out and robbing me of sleep.

It’s ironic that I’m experiencing a (recently rare) period of good health and at the moment two of my children and a grandchild are on two week pathways awaiting cancer investigations - all at the same time.

Obviously I’m a bit anxious, but I think it’s weighing on me because we’re keeping the news from some close family members. Usually my children and parents-in-law are fully aware of what’s going on in the family, but we agree we don’t want anyone to be unduly worried so we’re keeping our individual children’s secrets and it’s a burden. I shall be glad when the biopsies have been done and we can be open about it.

In the meantime my husband is staying overnight with one of our children and I’m finding it hard to stay asleep. 😓

So sorry grannyactivist that you have these worries. I hope by now you have dosed off for awhile. I too have been awake for hours. Yes, night time increases all kinds of worries and it is hard to deal with. I try reading and like you look at my ipad and view what is going on in general. The waiting for results is really difficult to handle but I do hope all will be well. It must be so much more difficult trying to keep everything to yourselves. Life is full of difficulties and sometimes it seems never ending but this difficult time will pass and I do hope all will turn out well.

It’s no wonder is it. Wishing you all the very best news, then you can sleep soundly. šŸ’

I'm not surprised you're having problems sleeping!

I hope you managed to get some more sleep?
Thinking of you and your family. šŸ’

What worries to have grannyactivist little wonder sleep is elusive.
Get up and make yourself a cup of tea, read, listen to the radio or anything to take your mind off for a while.
Luckily we don't need more that about 5 hours to keep healthy.

nadateturbe Wed 15-May-24 06:49:56

So many serious worries grannyactivist.
Hope you managed some sleep. šŸ’

I am sorry your not getting enough sleep grannyactivist. I hope you get some good news soon. I'm a poor sleeper myself. I know it can be horrible being awake when you think everyone else is getting a good night's rest. The reality is far from that. Apparently poor sleeping is very common. At the moment I lay some of the blame on not night's and light mornings. I don't have any advice or handy tips sadly but as I say hopefully good news for you soon.

Screen time at or just before bed time is said to be bad because it stimulates the brain rather than relaxing it. I find that a warm shower at bedtime relaxes me. When I get into bed I have some little rituals that I say to myself and am often asleep before I finish the first verse.

I rarely sleep much more than 4/5 hours at a stretch anyway.

However I dont have any "set" time to go to bed. One of the compensations of being retired from employed work.

My nights have been sleepless recently because of health worries within my immediate family. I am respecting my families wishes not sharing these worries.
I have had my own very difficult times in the past but I don’t cope so well these days. It all becomes too much waiting for results and makes me feel stressed.

I now occupy myself pottering around my garden and hope for the best possible outcome for these problems. It’s the only way I can find to keep the stress levels at bay. I hope grannyactivist and anyone in a similar position can also find some way to alleviate the worry. It might also help solve the sleepless nights too.

I am so scared and emotional many times during some days that sleep is a blessed relief from the torture and ā€˜what ifs’ in my mind. Bed is now my safe space, I zone out. It calls to me some early evenings and I look at the clock and think ā€˜I can’t just yet’.

GrannySomerset Wed 15-May-24 09:20:44

How hard for you. As DS, not a child who slept much, explained, ā€œmy thinking won’t stopā€, and not all the will power in the world can help. Hope that some definite news and plans for the way ahead will help and give you something to focus on instead of the vague dread which goes with not knowing.

So sorry for all going through these tough times. Theres no sense to things sometimes.

Kate1949 Wed 15-May-24 09:47:17

I'm sorry to hear this ga. No wonder you can't sleep. Many of us on here have been through the agony of waiting for results of loved ones' illnesses. I'm sending positive vibes.

Do you have a smart phone? If so, look for InsightTimer, and in the sleep section will be Jennifer Piercy tracks, Yoga Nidra for Sleep, Healing Darkness for Sleep, and Bone Deep Sleep.

I used to have terrible trouble getting to sleep, and waking up in the night and unable to get back to sleep. Nowadays, I put on one of these to get to sleep (the first two are best for this), and if I wake up, use another to get back to sleep (usually the third one). I keep my phone by my bed so that it's easy. These are completely free.

No wonder you can’t sleep, ga. I’ve been through it before and am doing so again and the only thing worse than not being able to sleep is waking up and realising it’s all still there.

It just doesn’t seem fair that so many young members of your family are in the same worrying position. So much stress for all concerned.

My very best wishes to you and your DH and hoping for good outcomes.

grannyactivist Wed 15-May-24 16:05:59

Thank you all for your kind responses. šŸ¤—

It’s hard to keep secrets in a family where we’re all usually very open with each other, but I know this period will soon pass and hopefully the biopsy results will all prove to be benign.

AGAA4 Wed 15-May-24 16:29:30

There's nothing like worries to keep you awake at night. I hope you get good news soon.

downtoearth Wed 15-May-24 16:35:05

I’m so very sorry to hear about all your family worries, ga. No wonder you’re having trouble sleeping. You’ll be in the thoughts and prayers of many on here and we’ll be hoping to hear good news all round. thanks

Just popped back to update the thread.
Grandson booked in for biopsy under GA - delayed because he had an accident and had to heal before it could be done.

Daughter; cancer cells confirmed, now awaiting treatment options.

Son has had his appointment pushed back twice and new appointment is 6+ weeks after referral. He’s going to request they send him elsewhere. 😔 Grrrr!

AGAA4 Sat 25-May-24 11:33:58

I hope the results of the biopsy is clear for your grandson and that your daughter can start her treatment and get better.
It's very frustrating and worrying that your son has had his appointment put back.
I wish you all well and hope you get through this bad patch soon. šŸ’

Very worrying for you, Ga and delays only add to the stress.

Thank you for updating us.

I have various health problems and sleeping is hard, especially waiting for things like cancer results I know. When my brain will not stop and reading isnt working I do this and pass it on as something you might try. I count backwards from 1000 in 3's. So the lights can be off, and using 3 means that it is not glib or easy like an even number .If the mind starts to wander and I forget where I am , I go back to 1000 again. It is a sort of mindless thing, but it does help to block the mind from constantly going in directions you dont want it to. I find it can be more relaxing that trying not to think of something worrying, and it works as a little block to the brain going round and round the problem area. When people suggest thinking of a lovely view of a lake or something, it does not work for me if there is a real worry and can be less calming than the counting !! You might have to practise it for a few times for it to work but hope it may give you something worth trying. Good luck and hope you get some good sleep soon
