What gives you that icky feeling?
Mine is sliding the plastic cover of a razor, I always feel I’m going to slice through my fingers.

Standing sharp kitchen knife upright in drainer. Visions of bending down and knife going in my eyes.

What are your icky thoughts?

The word icky. ( Sorry)

keepcalmandcavachon Wed 15-May-24 16:32:22

Photos of 'Grazing Tables', the mere thought of folks digging in!

I think you’ve misunderstood the meaning of being given the ick.

Auntieflo Wed 15-May-24 16:52:41

Just the word "ick", gives me the "ick"

I have a confession. There is a Gransnetter whose username gives me the ick. Obviously I’m not going to say who it is …

Casdon Wed 15-May-24 17:03:34

Spitting. I can’t abide it, it’s the most disgusting habit ever.

Roflmao.
I'm going to be taking more notice of names now. Haha.

What word did we use before 'ick' came into being?

hollysteers Wed 15-May-24 17:24:55

Bad table manners.

VioletSky Wed 15-May-24 17:37:16

Do you mean that skin crawling feeling?

Having to touch certain fabrics just sends all my nerves endings into some sort of tantrum

Sparklefizz Wed 15-May-24 19:26:27

Remember the days when we would just say "I don't like ...." ?

Who invented the icky word "ick" ?

I have a similar thing with wooden spoons. Can’t bear to touch them. I’ve had to start carrying a set of plastic cutlery in my bag in case I’m ever presented with those hideous bamboo spoons and forks while I’m out. I can’t have a Magnum at the theatre either - at home I cut them off the stick (while wearing my Marigolds 😊).

I think you mean ick rather than icky

.....What word did we use before 'ick' came into being?"

My mother used to say something gave her the dry heaves.

What gives me the dry heaves/ick is people chewing gum and, double-ick, blowing bubbles with gum. 🤮

Bridie22 Wed 15-May-24 19:49:02

Cotton wool !

Rats, alive or dead. Candy floss. Raw egg whites.

Macadia Wed 15-May-24 20:05:38

People not covering their sneeze.

nanaK54 Wed 15-May-24 20:11:08

Nail biting

When I used to work in offices I hated the smell of other people's lunch. I don't mean sandwiches but leftovers from their previous night's meal warmed up in the communal kitchen's microwave. I found the pungent odour of last night's curry or casserole really unpleasant.

I was recently offered a shortbread biscuit that had been made at nursery school by next door neighbour's 3 year old. It was grey and sent a shudder through me. I very politely declined.

I know I must sound like Hyacinth Bucket but I'm really not. I wouldn't be so unkind or rude to comment on either of the above scenarios but, nonetheless, ick!

A baby word for sick
I laughed flappergirl at the grey shortbread biscuit and shuddered at the same time.
The thought of eating anything a small child made🤢

BigBertha1 Wed 15-May-24 22:37:06

People chewing gum.....it does make me heave.

The word was first coined in the tv show Ali McBeal
It’s got nothing to do with likes and dislikes. It’s related to dating, ie, a certain feeling you get from someone.
My example is from many years ago when I fancied one of the compositors like mad, then one day I saw that he wore white socks 😱. That’s the ick

Oh, I see.

When you used to go on a date with someone (in the dim and distant past) and noticed that they held their knife like a pen 😀
