Do you take sugar in your tea or coffee?

I think I'd quite like to give it up, so would appreciate any tips on how to manage it, please?

I can take just a flat spoonful in tea, but for coffee, it keeps creeping back up again and I'm now on one "and a bit".

MissAdventure Wed 15-May-24 19:02:23

Well, I've got a coffee now, with one sugar.
So I've had to have an iced donut with it. blush

Bridie22 Wed 15-May-24 19:06:37

That's cheating!!!
Wish I had a doughnut, only got ginger biscuits!!

JamesandJon33 Wed 15-May-24 19:09:04

I just stopped. Took a while but now tea with sugar is much to sweet. You must persevere.

MissAdventure Wed 15-May-24 19:09:54

I like those, too.
Especially the ones with chewy bits of ginger in.

Bridie22 Wed 15-May-24 19:11:48

M/S stem ginger...posh me !

MissAdventure Wed 15-May-24 19:13:54

I thought you were quietly posh. wink

Well, my next door neighbour is very kindly taking me to B&M on Friday, so I'll hopefully find some Canderel there.
Then I'll make a concerted effort.

MissAdventure Wed 15-May-24 19:22:52

Anyway, I'm OK for my next 6 coffees

NotAGran55 Wed 15-May-24 19:24:47

Cold turkey, in addition to cutting out all sugary items at the same time until you no longer like the taste.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Like others I cut it out in my drinks and on cereal many years ago BUT if I have pancakes or porridge cannot resist it, especially very dark brown sugar

My late dh used to have sugar butties as a child, even as an adult he would have syrup butties (he was so cheap to feed lol)

Norah Wed 15-May-24 19:34:07

I've use tinned coconut creme in coffee, acceptable to me.

Norah Wed 15-May-24 19:35:49

I've I do

MissAdventure Wed 15-May-24 19:37:15

Oh I've not heard of that, Norah.
That's nteresting, because I have a barely formulated idea that I will give up dairy products at some point.
Is it a dairy product?

No. We're vegan, we eat no dairy.

We use the tins of coconut milk/creme as we'd use in curry.

MissAdventure Wed 15-May-24 20:01:00

Oh well thanks for that.
I'd like to try it for sure. smile
It sounds delicious, though a lot of milk substitutes sound better than they taste, I've found.

Oh the joy of sugar sandwiches! Syrup ones are excellent too. Used to enjoy a salt sandwich too……. Yes I am on cholesterol medication ….

Cutting sugar out for Lent stopped me taking sugar in tea or coffee. I wish it worked the same for chocolate.

When I was a child only three drinks were allowed - water , milk and tea unless you were sick then you could have Ribena or Lucozade ( can't tolerate it ) .
I recall finding tea too sweet and asked for half a teaspoonful and then a quarter then none .
I don't like sweeteners and they are bad for you .
Can you very slowly wean yourself off sugar ?
Wishing you luck .

MissAdventure Wed 15-May-24 20:35:18

Yes, I was only allowed water as a child.
Funnily enough, because I had so little appetite, my mum didn't want me filling up with drinks.
How things change! smile

I tried Hermesetas but didn’t like them. Try Canderel. They all have something bad in them but it’s better than snorting coke (I think …).

"Hermesetas, better than snorting coke"

Wonderful GSM. Have you considered a career in advertising?

I stopped taking sugar in tea and coffee about twenty years ago - just cold turkey really and didn’t take long to get used to. I quite like oat or almond milk in coffee as it adds a bit of natural sweetness, but use ordinary milk in tea as I think it tastes much better unsweetened and I can now appreciate a good malty tea much better.

I think it’s really interesting that according to experiments with rats cocaine is actually less addictive. When rats were given the choice between water sweetened with saccharine or iv cocaine they chose the sweetened water. The same preference was shown for water sweetened with natural sucrose over cocaine. This was repeated even when the cocaine dose increased.
The conclusion was that intense sweetness can surpass cocaine reward in mammals, including humans, for whom sugar is a relatively recent addition to diet, and induces an addiction stronger than a drug such as cocaine.

To test this I guess we should remove ALL sweetened food and drink from our diet and see how we cope?

See - N.I.H Pub Med. Intense sweetness surpasses cocaine reward.
