Do you take sugar in your tea or coffee?

I think I'd quite like to give it up, so would appreciate any tips on how to manage it, please?

I can take just a flat spoonful in tea, but for coffee, it keeps creeping back up again and I'm now on one "and a bit".

You only need to buy a dispenser once, then buy the refill packs.

MissA Waitrose sell boxes of Candarel, 5x 100 tabs in packets, cheaper than keep buying the dispensers.

I did the cold turkey route in my early 20s. I was putting on weight and cutting out the massive amount of sugar I took in my milkless tea seemed to be a good idea. After a few weeks of drinking disgusting tea I had a really bad day at work so decided to have a tea with sugar in as a reward. It tasted foul. I decided that if if it was going to taste vile either way I had it I'd better persist with the 'no sugar' route.
I can't bear milk in tea, either, not even a tiny drop.

(I don't drink coffee, the invention of the devil 😉 )

I actually barely drink tea or coffee these days anyway, thinking about it.

Still, at least it will give me something to be bad tempered about. wink

🤣🤣🤣🤣

So, as poisons go, Canderel is one of the best. smile

So are tea and coffee probably.

Water?
Unless you live in Brixham at the moment.

I’m another who likes Canderel. In fact I don’t like sugar in my coffee now, I find it too sweet, I much prefer the sweetener. I don’t sweeten my tea, but if I did, I’d use Canderel.

I gave up sugar in tea as a teenager by just going cold turkey
And in coffee too.

I did that too ayse, when I was in my early 20s.

DH takes a Stevia sugar substitute.

Aspartame is poison!

I don't take sugar in coffee or tea but unfortunately I take far more sugar which is included in all the chocolate and cakes I consume!

henetha Wed 15-May-24 22:15:02

I like tea without sugar, but coffee just needs something I think. So I add a small spoonful of Stevia, Half Sugar.
As I don't regularly drink coffee , using just a small amount I don't worry too much about whether it's bad for me or not.

MissAdventure Wed 15-May-24 22:12:58

I'll be trying whatever B&M sell.
I might even get two or three options to test, if they have them.

Sugar is bad for us, sweeteners are bad for us, alcohol is bad for us. I don’t drink coffee. Some sweeteners act as laxatives. I forget which ones. I drink tea with Sweetex normally.

Georgesgran Wed 15-May-24 21:48:57

Definitely Canderel.
As yet, my nose and brain appear relatively intact!

Yes, I was only allowed water as a child.
Funnily enough, because I had so little appetite, my mum didn't want me filling up with drinks.
How things change! smile

Your post resonated with me. My mum has dementia and it’s affected the area of her brain that controls appetite. Her dietician recommended cutting down on fluids close to meal times - it seems the higher the fluid intake, the lower the appetite, so your mum was right !!

I tried Hermesetas but didn’t like them. Try Canderel. They all have something bad in them but it’s better than snorting coke (I think …).

I think it’s really interesting that according to experiments with rats cocaine is actually less addictive. When rats were given the choice between water sweetened with saccharine or iv cocaine they chose the sweetened water. The same preference was shown for water sweetened with natural sucrose over cocaine. This was repeated even when the cocaine dose increased.
The conclusion was that intense sweetness can surpass cocaine reward in mammals, including humans, for whom sugar is a relatively recent addition to diet, and induces an addiction stronger than a drug such as cocaine.

To test this I guess we should remove ALL sweetened food and drink from our diet and see how we cope?

See - N.I.H Pub Med. Intense sweetness surpasses cocaine reward.

I stopped taking sugar in tea and coffee about twenty years ago - just cold turkey really and didn’t take long to get used to. I quite like oat or almond milk in coffee as it adds a bit of natural sweetness, but use ordinary milk in tea as I think it tastes much better unsweetened and I can now appreciate a good malty tea much better.

Wonderful GSM. Have you considered a career in advertising?

Esmay Wed 15-May-24 20:30:56

When I was a child only three drinks were allowed - water , milk and tea unless you were sick then you could have Ribena or Lucozade ( can't tolerate it ) .
I recall finding tea too sweet and asked for half a teaspoonful and then a quarter then none .
I don't like sweeteners and they are bad for you .
Can you very slowly wean yourself off sugar ?
Wishing you luck .

Cutting sugar out for Lent stopped me taking sugar in tea or coffee. I wish it worked the same for chocolate.

Oh the joy of sugar sandwiches! Syrup ones are excellent too. Used to enjoy a salt sandwich too……. Yes I am on cholesterol medication ….
