Do you take sugar in your tea or coffee?

I think I'd quite like to give it up, so would appreciate any tips on how to manage it, please?

I can take just a flat spoonful in tea, but for coffee, it keeps creeping back up again and I'm now on one "and a bit".

I have used Canderel sweeteners for years. I find they are a good substitute. I just hate tea or coffee without either sugar or Canderel.

I used to use sweetners, then my daughter put her two pennies worth in about them being bad... I used hermaseetas.
Spelt wrong, I'm sure.

I tried Hermesetas but didn’t like them. Try Canderel. They all have something bad in them but it’s better than snorting coke (I think …).

I gave up sugar in tea as a teenager by just going cold turkey. It doesn’t take long to get used to. I rarely have strong coffee and I find that usually the milk makes it sweet enough. Sometimes I treat myself to stronger coffee with sugar and milk/cream.

My husband has been using sweeteners for years. Apparently Truvia is ‘health wise’ but it’s quite expensive. Good luck with your project.

Used to take two sugars in tea, cut it down to one, then give it up for Lent, it now tastes awful if somebody gives me sugared tea 😬

As long as my nose doesn't fall off and plop in my tea. smile

My mum went cold turkey and hated tea with or without sugar for a long, long while.
I hate my tea too sugary, but coffee, well I could happily have two or three spoons of sugar in.

I hadn't even thought about going back to sweeteners. Good advice, thanks.

I'll try canderel, I think, this time.

Why not try a more natural sugar such as Erythritol? No calories, and healthier so they say.

I gave up sugar in tea and coffee when I was about 22 when it suddenly occurred to me that all those spoonfuls of sugar could be replaced with a couple of cream cakes from a lovely bakery near by. It took a few days to get rushed to it and then I never wanted it again. Now I would find added sugar impossible to drink.

MissAdventure Wed 15-May-24 18:32:27

I've never heard of that.
I bet its expensive, and I'm incredibly stingy.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 15-May-24 18:32:53

My husband went cold turkey years ago. It’s not for me. My nose is still intact!

crazyH Wed 15-May-24 18:34:43

Miss A I went from 2 sugars to now, 1/4 teaspoon. I cut it down slowly.

crazyH Wed 15-May-24 18:35:49

Over a couple of months

I don’t drink tea, but I drink black coffee without sugar. I cut down gradually by the quarter teaspoonful years ago, now I can’t stand the taste with sugar in at all. I think it must be just what you get used to, and now think you can taste the coffee itself better when it’s not masked by sugar.

This thread has brought back a memory for me.
Many moons ago when I still lived at home the price of sugar rocketed for some reason- can’t remember why.
My Dad was incensed and said it was profiteering and we should do our bit and refuse to buy it. Thus we all stopped taking it in tea- we never had coffee at home.
Never used it in drinks since - good old Dad he did love making a stand.
Thanks for the chance to remember and good luck with giving up

MissAdventure Wed 15-May-24 18:44:35

I keep cutting down, then I cut back up again.

Bridie22 Wed 15-May-24 18:46:45

Oh me too, especially with a nice ploughman's, with strong cheese.

Sago Wed 15-May-24 18:58:31

I only drink tea and have to have some sweetener, I used candarel and similar for years and then thy started giving me cramps.
I went onto Stevia for around 2 years and the same thing had happened so it’s back to 1/2 teaspoon of sugar.

M0nica Wed 15-May-24 18:58:52

Gave sugar up for Lent, when I was at school. Come Easter and my first tea and coffee with sugar, it tasted revolting and I have been sugarfree ever since.

I am actually finding as I get older I am becoming more and more sugar averse, and no longer enjoy sweet food or drink.

Bridie22 Wed 15-May-24 18:58:52

Mmmm, making me hungry now !!!
