Patronising.

AGAA4

I try to be fair minded and treat all my neighbours with the same contempt. 😄

😂

Galaxy Fri 17-May-24 08:56:25

I am not speaking to my neighbours and they havent moved in yet. I feel I should get some sort of award.

Robin202 Fri 17-May-24 09:07:54

If they live anti-socially, abuse children or animals, damage my property, disrespect or attempt to undermine my culture and traditional values, then no, I wont love all all my neighbours.
Otherwise, we’ll get along just fine.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 17-May-24 09:14:53

Our previous neighbour told me gleefully that he had sold the house to a large Asian family (cannot and would not use the word he used)

So pleased he did as 20+ years later we are firm friends as are our children, despite different cultures and religions.

Grammaretto Fri 17-May-24 09:19:14

It's what I dislike about Christianity or any organised religion.

A commandment!

Please don't tell me what to think, what to believe or when to pray.

I was at my grown-up DGS baptism recently. It was very moving hearing the testimonies from all these young people who had found Christianity but there was such emphasis on sin and forgiveness from sin I wondered how much sin they had had time to commit.

Grammaretto Fri 17-May-24 09:20:49

BTW I do quite like my current neighbours.

petra Fri 17-May-24 09:27:14

I’d like to meat the author of the poster and ask them how they would deal with a neighbour I had many years ago.
She got some pleasure from throwing stuff at my French doors late at night.
It scared the life out of me as I was on my own with a baby.
Often in the middle of the night she would bang loudly ( it sounded like it could be a broom? ) on our adjoining bedroom wall.
She would never answer the door when I wanted to confront her.
Then one day ( about 6 in the morning) she went too far. My tortoise had got into her her garden, she was waving it around threatening to harm him.
I rushed down to the garden where she informed me that she got the last people out of my house and she would get me out.
My red mist came down and I hit her.
She called the police. But I heard no more from her.

This is the radical and unequivocal call to arms of Christianity and so many reject because it is so hard.

However, some people seem to be misinterpreting both what neighbour and love mean.

Your neighbour means anyone, friend or stranger. Simply any other human, all created equal in God's sight.

Love doesn't mean condoning crime, being a doormat or not standing up for yourself.

Another quote from same Bible also says, 'Love your neighbour as yourself.'

Without recognising your own dignity and need to love yourself, how can you possibly love others?

Grammaretto Fri 17-May-24 09:37:06

Oh Petra, how awful.
She sounds deranged.
I suppose in the context of the poster it doesn't need to be your next door neighbour, just those in your community.

I think it's interesting that when there's a cry for help from far afield - a war zone or famine, we rush to send money or clothes but if someone nearby is sitting in a doorway and begging, we walk on by.

Galaxy Fri 17-May-24 09:38:02

We dont reject because it's hard, we just think differently and dont believe what you do.

TerriBull Fri 17-May-24 09:39:09

We all know Christ was a beacon of tolerance, but the churches set up in his name veered well away from the spirit of what he preached, it's the vanguard of organised religion that is so often the problem. Noble and well intentioned is the somewhat sanctimonious message contained, just taking GN as a microcosm of society per se, some will shout down any opposing point of view We are entering an increasingly illiberal time, one only has to see how that is manifested on the streets around us to know how little tolerance there is particularly in a religious context.

For me, it comes down to what mumofmadboys said, Hate the sin love the sinner.

Very difficult I know. Especially in some circumstances.

Just reread and see that you hit her!
Oops.

BigBertha1 Fri 17-May-24 09:39:35

I think I'd prefer 'be kind to' rather than . Its active and something I can achieve.

Galaxy Fri 17-May-24 09:40:16

I loathe be kind as well, but I am quite grumpy this morning grin

This.

One wonders why the sender felt the need to forward something so preachy. Of course "neighbour" is a metaphor for any old Tom, Dick or Hatry and encompasses that tired old cliche "be kind" modern talk for don't argue with my pov. I think I'd be inclined to respond to the "without exception" so do you extend that to Putin, Kim Jong? It's message is idealistic load of pie in the sky drivel and a subliminal put up with any old crap behaviour in a subservient and unquestioning manner.

eazybee Fri 17-May-24 10:36:26

What is wrong with Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself?

Rather more memorable.

Namsnanny Fri 17-May-24 11:28:53

Nothing eazybee.

Other than it doesnt play into the op's prejudices quite as well.

maddyone Fri 17-May-24 11:37:23

Well, unless someone has done something to you, personally, then at least maybe try some empathy, if not love.

And forgiveness is supposed to be good for you, if you've been wronged.

It's a tall order though.

Yes, agree.
I’m not sure I can ever forgive my ex SiL for what he has done to my daughter and grandchildren.

Why does anyone post anything on here?
It seems to me there is an overabundance of drivel on this site but everyone has a right to their opinion with out being called subservient and unquestioning.

As I read it, I don't think Terribull meant the poster, she meant the friend who sent it in the first place to Ladyleftfieldlover

LLFL didn't pass a comment and wasn't preaching at us so was probably asking for our opinions.

These memes are always going round on Facebook etc. Sometimes they make you 😁, sometimes 🤮

This is 🙃

Namsnanny Fri 17-May-24 12:31:43

Or trying to stir and dodge a bullet at the same time.

TerriBull Fri 17-May-24 12:44:20

Yes thank you Callistemon exactly what I meant.
