After reading the Anaesthetic thread, this reminded me of my worst fear…..I have this dread of being in my coffin and still being aware of what’s happening. I don’t mean being pronounced dead by mistake…..

RosiesMaw has very good reason for how she feels today Poppyred. Not only is she widowed and the mother of a baby who died soon after birth, she has suffered two bereavements in the last week.

Should she be following this thread then? Probably not.

How very compassionate you are.

I’m not going to argue with you. We have all lost people that we love and miss very, very much. This is NOT what this chat is about.

My Mums older sister (no longer with us) told a story of when she had her heart attack of being on a table in the morgue and just being able to move a little finger enough for someone to notice. She then got a pacemaker and lived many years after up to 92 years old.

Better make sure that it's always fully charged!

And don't have a metal lined coffin as there wouldn't be any reception!

Taking yourself a little too seriously today RosiesMaw ?? If we want to talk about it, we will

Feel free Poppyred to talk about it as much as you want - only get your facts right . It’s not the subject I find distasteful but the depth of ignorance.

There certainly were cases in the past where a deep coma might have been mistaken for death but we have modern medicine, modern technology and can tell the difference
You’ll be worrying about organs being harvested for transplant next and no doubt somebody will have a fit of the vapours at the thought that a patient who is brain dead ‘s body being kept functioning on machines until the organs can be removed.
Yes I’ve seen that too. And the care lavished by the nursing staff on the patient is truly touching. But they are beyond recovery in any sense of the word.
All I am taking seriously is the real ignorance eg about vein cutting , being buried alive or embalming . (Incidentally not common practice in this country but very much so in others.)
I’m not bothered by people joking about a fear of waking up in the crem or being buried alive - as long as it is only a joke.
But some people really seem to be taking it seriously and I have never read such a load of embarrassingly ill-informed and superstitious tosh as I have seen on this thread.

Poppyred Tue 21-May-24 18:12:54

There you go Maw put people in their place….you know best. How dare people put their views and beliefs (rightly or wrongly) on a public forum and then telling them to grow up.🙄🙄🙄.

Mt61 Tue 21-May-24 18:16:48

Don’t they put us in a freezer? that will kills us surely. I don’t want embalming but now I might asked to be embalmed, as the mortician cuts into an artery to pump the stuff round, so mortician must know if we are dead 😔 doesn't bare thinking about

Give it a rest Poppyred. You’ve caused enough heartache already.

I am stunned by your attitude Poppyred.

There have been a few members in the last few days, who have lost loved ones and you have shown a lack of sensitivity and compassion by your responses.

tictacnana Tue 21-May-24 18:43:52

Well that’s cheered me up ! Cheers for that !🤨

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 21-May-24 18:49:49

Thank you Marydoll. Unfortunately RosiesMaw is indeed but one of us who has been recently bereaved, not to mention those who know bereavement is not far away. I hope Poppyred will reflect on that,

I rarely talk about this tbh, but couldn't resist ...
Many years ago I had an office in a disused wing of a local hospital and I often worked late after colleagues had gone home. One evening (after months of strange things happening) my diary was thrown on the floor while I was typing away in a different room, and a heavy metal storage cupboard shook against the wall when I went to see what the noise was, so I decided to ask a local medium to visit. When she arrived on a Saturday morning she immediately said 'this place is busy'!! I didn't mention why I had asked her to come and left her to it. Around 30 minutes later she told me that a woman's face appeared in front of her and said ... "I didn't want to die here, they covered me up before she was dead!"

I recall that when Popes died the Chamberlain had to tap them on the head three times to confirm death. I think they've stopped doing that now.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 21-May-24 19:31:19

I bought a disused hospital site for a developer. The old mortuary was, without d

without doubt, haunted. I can’t say what happened there but I will only say that I would not have bought one of the properties built on the site of the mortuary. The haunting continued after redevelopment.

I wish id not seen this thread.its morbid.And panic-making

MayBee70 Tue 21-May-24 19:49:33

They built a new housing estate in the site of a local hospital (which had been built on the site of a workhouse). One night one of the night watchmen ran screaming to the farm that was across the road from it. I never did get to know what he had seen.

RosiesMaw Tue 21-May-24 21:09:05

Probably saw something nasty in the woodshed

To go back to OP
Why would you be in your coffin if you hadn't been pronounced dead?
And if you had not been pronounced dead by mistake presumably you would be dead so how would you know anything at all?

rafichagran Tue 21-May-24 21:17:09

To be fair Poppy has the right to post what she wants, and some posts have been a bit harsh.
I have always had a fear of being in a coffin and I am not dead. Its a irrational fear that I have and I am glad that Poppyred posted, I am sorry for people who have lost loved ones, but I do not think any hurt was intended. It has shown me I am not alone with this irrational fear.

MayBee70 Tue 21-May-24 21:30:30

I, too, have a fear of that and I’m relieved that it’s not just me ( it’s not the sort of thing that you slip into general conversation). There is an added reason but I can’t really write it on an open forum.

winterwhite Tue 21-May-24 21:37:38

I agree Rachifagran. Poppyred started this thread and can express herself as she thinks fit, as others do. Her posts don’t seem callous to me. Those who feel uncomfortable need not read it.

Bluecat Tue 21-May-24 23:36:31

I don't think you're likely to be buried or cremated whilst still alive, unless it happens very soon after your death. You can only survive for about three days without water and nobody is going to bring you a drink if they think you're dead. So if you didn't die of anything else, you would die of dehydration.

As for remaining conscious after death... Well, whether you're buried or cremated, your body won't last forever. So if there's some form of spiritual life after death, your consciousness or soul or whatever must eventually be free of your body. If there's nothing spiritual except your consciousness somehow lingering on, that's not a state that could last very long as your brain would soon cease to exist and your consciousness along with it.

So there's nothing really to be scared of, unless you believe in a religion which offers the possibility of hell. There's no way to comfort people about that, except to say that they're unlikely to be be bad enough to qualify!

Yoginimeisje Wed 22-May-24 08:45:03

There is still brain activity for 70/90 minutes after death.

Yoginimeisje Wed 22-May-24 08:47:07

Sorry think it's 70/90 hours.
