Do you like the new portrait of the princess of Wales?

On the front of Tatler today?
I don’t!
It’s flat, looks nothing like her and look amateurish. I've seen better portraits in my local church hall fetes. Yes, I understand that good drawing is considered naff, but that portrait is simply clumsy.

Ms Uzor the artist, who was chosen to paint the Princess of Wales, had just three weeks to complete the commission for Tatler. It wasn’t a commission by the RF.

She told the magazine that she was “unfazed”, adding: “Once I start painting, it will only take me two or three days.”

Oh dear. It shows in my opinion.

What do you think?

Theres an absolutely awful portrait of the late queen hanging on Buckingham palace.

One of the family favourites, apparently.

She has only three fingers on one hand, and it all sorts of other issues.

There is a horrible one of Catherine at the Fitzwilliam (no need to leave our home county), Prince or Wales looks fine in the portrait. Perhaps the men's faces are easier to paint well?

MissAdventure Thu 23-May-24 17:55:25

Maybe.
I'm no artist, though!
Possibly older faces could be easier then young?
More craggy and saggy. grin

Terrible portrait on the left ! It is disgraceful. Does not even look like her.

The photo on the right is beautiful. I have seen it before.

MissAdventure Thu 23-May-24 17:56:01

Than, not then.
My damn fingers.

I don't think I'd have recognised that it was meant to be the Princess of Wales. It looks like GCSE art coursework.

My Grandson GCE art work was much better than this. That's a bit of a insult to hard working students who put their all into their course work. unlike this person whose work looks like a paint by numbers effort, badly done.

I didnt like the portrait of Charles but this is a new level of awfulness.

Interestingly, I have gone to the original on re front of The Tatler and enlarged it on my screen. It does seem more of a likeness to the Princess then.... and is actually very detailed.

I've just had another look.

It's definitely a paint by numbers.

Maybe the artist has captured the real 'her'. I, like most other people, have never actually seen her in the flesh and have only seen the photos that we have been allowed to see.

I wouldn’t have known who she was but then I probably wouldn’t anyway. It looks a bit wooden.

As I understand it the artist had no live sittings, but completed this portrait entirely from photographs, so in painting this portrait she hadn't seen he other than in photos either.

On looking through the artists website I feel we are not giving her the credit she is due. The portraits on there are fine and detailed showing character and personality.

Unfortunately this one only shows the artists character, it looks flat and devoid of life because Ms Uzor is not interested in the sitter.

I've had a closer look as well. It is more detailed and more realistic than it appears at first. But I also wonder if the mask-like appearance is quite deliberate. The artist never met her, painted from photographs and has produced the image that is projected to the public. It isn't the person. It's a princess. Few know the person, although many seem to think they do

It's as grotesque as the one of Charles! I'm no great royal fan but Catherine is a really beautiful lady and very gracious etc. even in her own ''off duty'' clothes, and that portrait makes her face look alien-like!

Plastic is the word I think of when I look at it. Imagine having to wonder if your portrait depends on whether or not the artist is interested in you.
The image of the Princess of Wales projected to the public is from the photographs we see of her. The painting isn’t even a good likeness from those.

Glorianny There is little or no likeness there. The proportions of the face are wrong and the hands are badly painted as well

I think this is probably one of the photos she used. There is a resemblance.
The hands are not badly painted. They are positioned possibly to display the ring and to give the impression of control. The ringhand holding back the other.

What on earth has happened to the decent artists?
The poor lass looks Chinese!
And flat!

Really, the artist has no visual perception of what this beautiful woman looks like. She's made her look like a Wooden doll, with no character, not the beautiful women you see on TV. Whoever and why they gave this so called artist the job, well its beyond me.

PamQS Sun 26-May-24 11:06:53

It captures none of her charm and elegance!

missdeke Sun 26-May-24 11:35:15

I just looked up the comments the artist made aftr such a condemning backlash to her work. She said that she captures the soul of the sitter! If that's the case then Kate must be pretty soul-less. Looking at some of her other work she can actually paint quite well.

pably15 Sun 26-May-24 11:40:44

It's nothing like her ...it's an insult...a child could have done better..

Pacamac70 Sun 26-May-24 11:51:19

It’s diabolical such a poor painting hasn’t captured her beauty at all. So so bad.
