I am 72 and still feel young, I try to keep up with fashion and can't abide old granny clothes and like to keep my hair looking good. Still love wear good cut jeans etc. Can never quite understand why some ladies and men seem to let themselves go as they age.

I have no idea what "feeling young" feels like, it's a bit of an odd concept as far as I'm concerned. I look after my appearance for me, not anyone else, because it makes me happy to have nice clothes and a decent hair cut etc. My grandson had seen the Louis Theroux interview with Joan Collins and he told me she reminded him of me. I howled with laughter and pointed out that she was in her 90's and wore wigs, whereas I was 75 and wore my own hair. I don't feel old but I am very different to the young woman I used to be and very grateful to be around to continue having birthdays!

I feel hale and hearty. Don't exactly know what feeling young means. I like to dress colourfully, toning and smart. As Monica suggests, this has always been my mantra. Consider myself one very blessed 'oldie' and enjoy life to the hilt.

I’m with you, Nb, 76 on the outside, 30 on the inside.
I wear what I like, but pass on the miniskirts. Now that my hair is white, I’m wearing colours I ever dreamed of in my youth.
What does annoy me, is that I tire more easily and my considerable vocabulary is deserting me.
Hey ho. Growing old is not for sissies!

Eirlys

Wish Gransnet Forum posts had an editing facility so that I could add "old age" missed out in the above post!!

Eirlys, I'm not sure what you mean, where would you insert old age?

Urmstongran Mon 03-Jun-24 12:14:15

People dress as they get older the same way they dressed when they were younger

I’m trying hard right now MOnica to do up the buttons on my romper suit.

crazyH Mon 03-Jun-24 12:17:41

NannaBarbra- I think Eirlys meant “old age” in her earlier post. She just put “”

Kat2 Mon 03-Jun-24 12:21:03

I don’t think old granny clothes exist these days do they? I wouldn’t know where to go to buy such clothes.

karmalady Mon 03-Jun-24 12:21:04

as long as I can climb hills on my road bike
as long as I have the energy that I have
as long as I have enthusiasms for different things

I dress in whatever I want, usually from my own hand -mades via the latest indie sewing patterns

I have decollete wrinkles but I don`t care, my face looks younger than my age of 76 and my eyes are bright

I am very happy in my own skin and always listen to my body. I live alone and relish the silence

My close and extended families still respect me for my opinions and advice, particularly about health matters and well-being going forward. I am the centre of the family wheel

Yes I feel young and walk upright. Feeling young is nothing to do with looks or clothes, it is to do with the inner self

I feel young in my head, am interested in how I dress. I have been told I look younger than my years but know at nearly 76 I can’t kid myself any more.
Its hard to take in just how fast the years have raced by. Even as I type 76 I don’t recognise that it’s me that I am talking about, and not someone else who is 76 , and definitely old.
But still here wink

Kate1949 Mon 03-Jun-24 12:25:59

Well good for you Tiley keeping your hair looking good. I'd be interested to know how you would cope if you had alopecia (total hair loss) like me. It's not that easy for everyone. You have no idea what reasons some women (or men) have for, as you put it 'letting themselves go.'

Annma Mon 03-Jun-24 12:26:40

I still feel young in many ways and try to keep pretty active.I have my hair styled every six weeks and wear light makeup and take care of my skin .I like to dress reasonably smart, and if you wait long enough older clothes come back into fashion. My husband (73) has recently had a bad motorcycle accident-a broken tibia and fibula and has had a metal pin inserted into his leg.He has never grown up, but is giving biking up now for good.He decidedhe wanted to see his grandchildren grow up - he can concentrate on his guitars instead.

Skydancer Mon 03-Jun-24 12:30:22

I try to look good with clothes and a bit of make up. But my body is slowly, bit by bit, telling me that I am falling apart.

Kartush Mon 03-Jun-24 12:32:10

I am 69, my brain thinks that I am 20, my body thinks I am 120. i have never been a follower of fashion and I tend to live in bright coloured kaftans and leggings.
I dont cut my hair so right now it is down to my butt and a beautiful silver grey.
I listen to heavy metal and anything my grandson sends me on YouTube. So do I feel young? I guess so most of the time.

Blossoming Mon 03-Jun-24 12:37:23

I feel like myself, don’t care what others think about me 😂

petra Mon 03-Jun-24 12:50:06

Everyone has only mentioned clothes. No one has mentioned their brain and attitude towards the world and the young.

I’m very often surprised when reading posts from people to realise how young they are when a lot of their posting has made me think they’re a lot older.

Look at the amount of posters who still say ooh, I can’t do this that on their devices. These aren’t old people but relatively young.

It’s your brain that gives your age away.

I do feel a lot younger than I am, 68, me and my pup have just got back from a festival in our little camper and we're going away again on Friday to another campsite, 2 more festivals booked, I wear what I like, no crop tops or the like mind you, I enjoy going out with my dog on long walks and meet up regularly with my various camping groups. I'll do it for as long as I'm able to. My hair is grown out to its natural silver and I don't dye it anymore....loving life at the minute

zakouma66 Mon 03-Jun-24 12:57:02

Everybody is doing their best I suppose. Some people have the odds stacked against them, bereavement, poor health, low mood.
Perhaps they gain weight, they can't afford dental work, hair dressers, well fitting clothes.

I have aged a great deal since 3 family members died.

skate Mon 03-Jun-24 12:58:46

To Kate 1949
I recommend a good wig, you can get some really natural looking ones from a company called Simply Wigs - they are online and have a huge selection with very helpful staff who you can consult before ordering if you wish. You can send for anything and returns are not a problem. And no, I don't work for them! I have very thin fine hair and just know that wearing a wig, which I do most of the time, does wonders for your appearance and hence your confidence. Those who talk blithely about getting a good haircut have no idea how awful it is to have no hair to speak of. Give the wig a whirl, you won't regret it!

grandtanteJE65 Mon 03-Jun-24 13:04:54

I wear what I want and don't bother about fashion as I no longer go out to work.

Do I feel young? That depends on what you mean and in which context you ask.

I have been forced to realise in the last 10 years or so, since the age of 60 that I no longer have the physical strenght I had when I was twenty, thirty, forty or fifty. Some jobs are now beyond my physical strength, others I can do, but they take longer and are more tiring than they once were.

I doubt that "the young" whoever they are would think of me as anything but ancient, but to me 72 is not ancient, but I will admit to old and experienced.

Dogmum2 Mon 03-Jun-24 13:05:01

Good question. I think i have (due to circumstances) lost a lot of optimism for our future. Rather than look forward with hope and anticipation, i look with trepidation. Therefore i would say my 'youthful' optimism has deserted me and that saddens me.

However, i/we do try our best to enjoy the moment, mix with different age groups, explore new ideas and yes, i do visit the hairdresser regularly, occasionally splurge on clothes other than stuff for dog walking and over this weekend got mistaken for my eldest GS's Mum!!

So in general terms, whilst i still feel 'young', my knee's, my hands and other things i cannot control conspire to slap me around the chops and remind me that i am no longer 27 x

Kate1949 Mon 03-Jun-24 13:05:19

Thank you skate. I have a hair system.

SusieB50 Mon 03-Jun-24 13:07:15

I live in jeans and tops many years old but comfortable. Grey hair is cut regularly and I’m never without mascara and blusher .
But the body is really telling me that I’m 74 plus . Parts replaced and others need replacing . Definitely don’t have the endless supply of energy anymore. I can’t wear pretty strappy sandals as I would fall over and sleeveless dresses are definitely a no in public!

JenniferEccles Mon 03-Jun-24 13:13:47

I’ve often wondered just how fashionable I would be if I was in my teens, twenties or thirties now.
There’s so much about today’s fashion that I hate, and it’s not my age, I know even then I would have thought ripped jeans ridiculous, leggings incredibly unflattering, and the obsession with trainers for virtually every occasion, astonishing.

Norah Mon 03-Jun-24 13:14:42

My knees, though replaced, don't feel particularly young. Apart from that I feel the same as always, I'm a happy person 99.9% of the time.
