EEK! Michael Mosley Missing in Greece

Just seen this on Sky news. Very sad indeed. Thoughts with his family.

No, that is not true.

A man whose father disappeared in similar circumstances has spoken to Sky News and said how much he feels for the family of Michael Moseley and what they are going through.

The case has parallels to that of John Tossell, a 78-year-old man from Bridgend, who went missing on the Greek island of Zakynthos five years ago this month.

"When I read the story it's like a cut and paste of my father," Mr Tossell's son Gary told Sky News

He could have had a fuzzy spell, tripped or anything, by his backpack he would most likely have had water and sunscreen and just forgotten his phone. I’ve left mine on the seat of my car when I went on a coach trip once, it ruined my day as I kept imagining it ringing and attracting attention. It’s looking extremely unlikely there will be a good outcome to this. His poor family must be in bits.

it states in news that his wife told police

'She explained he was wearing a khaki backpack and had his wallet, bottle of water and a watch, which was not a smart watch.'

so he did have a back pack!

Latest is that there is an on-going dangerous and very slow search of an underground series of caves called the abyss. Obviously there would be shelter from the heat but no fresh water and the tunnels fill with seawater

Oh Sparklefizz I fear you’re right & I’m wrong. Earlier I saw cctv footage and it did look as though he was carrying one but on a still photo from outside the cafe at Peti, under his umbrella, this didn’t seem to be the case.

If not, then the situation is even worse.

I've just looked again at the still photo and I see the straps of the back pack and close to the hip the lower edge of the back pack.

Yes, his wife was called to tell what she could about him, and she said he had a khaki coloured backpack and a bottle of water with him.

Transient global amnesia SueRose my friend had it a few years back and completely lost 24 hours She arrived home on the bus and did all the usual things like locking the doors shutting the greenhouse up and taking herself to bed Undressing etc but had NO recall at all.
Apparently he d had it once after cold water swimming

I reàd in the paper that he said he didn't feel too well so he was going for a walk Apparently he'd hrad some sort of episode previously which left him confused and disorientated for a few days can't remember what it was called I have got one of his books and often read his articles in The Mail I hope he is found safe and well

I don’t know what to make of this, it’s very strange. Everyone out looking for him on such a small island, and yet he hasn’t been found. His family must be out of their minds with worry. I should think his wife will be very grateful for the support of her friends, and her children who have all arrived today to support her.
I hope he is found, but I don’t feel optimistic.

Apart from anything else it looks such an unattractive place for a walk, and coupled with the searing heat, it makes his decision all the more extraordinary.

I didn’t know he had been feeling unwell just before he set off so that just adds to the mystery of what was on his mind.

As others have said, none of it makes any sense at all.

None of us know with any degree of accuracy the events that led to Michael's disappearance. It is so easy to sit and judge and be wise after the fact. How many of us have never, ever made an error of judgement? Forgotten something that would keep us safe?
There seems little hope that he will be found alive.
If I or any of my loved ones were in this dreadful situation it would only add to my torment to know that random strangers were commenting on a public forum "How could he be so stupid?"
Time now for some compassion?

how could he go off for a walk with no phone and no water on that boiling hot day ? His family must be in bits but he was really stupid . Every time DH leaves the house I ask him if he has his phone just in case it is needed.

That heartens me Aldom. And his family & friends too I expect. Gives hope.

Isn’t it distressing to think that all the time we’ve been discussing this (or sleeping) this poor man has been lying somewhere, hurt, dehydrated and frightened. If he’s conscious still. I can’t believe he still hasn’t been found.

But he could have taken a boat somewhere?

There’s sure to be more than this than meets the eye, it’s very sad for his family and friends.

I keep checking back on the BBC news website. Oh dear. Time is going on.

I have been following thread number 3 on Mumsnet and someone has linked an article from 2012 called Barry's Ramblings where he talks about taking a wrong route on exactly the same piece of terrain. There is also a really good photo from behind Symi and Pedi so you can see the 2 sea inlets and both towns/villages. You can see the route he should have taken and the route he is thought to have taken. In the wrong direction. It really puts you in the picture. Also on the thread there is a link to Twitter X where someone has walked and filmed the terrain leading down to Symi. It's very steep and rough. Full of boulders and gullies.
