Are you too scared to post what you really think?

Just that basically.

There’s been a few times that I’ve wanted to post something that I don’t think is provoking or malicious or offensive, but I’m really too scared to do so, just in case someone takes offence.

I never really thought that I would be too scared to say what I thought but I think it is now the reality of life in these days of everyone taking offence at the slightest thing.

It was in response to him being the wrong age to want Sky etc etc. tickingbird
Further upthread probably by now!

Thanks Notspaghetti that was helpful. As I say I am not in the slightest bit interested in the wealth if thr PM but that does put it into a different context than the soundbites.

I see. Not Spaghetti. No longer confused smile

And as someone else said, the interview was on Sky.

Perhaps he was being ironic?

There have been posters in the past who seem to have wanted to start a fight in an empty room, with wilful misinterpretation of opinions, and aggressive comments. Attempting to explain caused yet more outrage. Some of these posters have not been on GN for a while; perhaps they are building themselves up for further ravings. I have felt quite sorry for some posters on the receiving end, as I have been once or twice. We should be able to say what we think - the increasing trend for shutting down others opinions, either verbal or written, is alarming. I understand why the OP feel as she does.

Obviously there are people on here with a better education and and a more superior intellect to my own which is fair enough BUT when they use it to castigate and belittle other posters, I think it is disgusting and says more about them than the poster they are critiquing….🤨

There are at least 2 threads recently, started by posters who do post from time to time, who have not returned to their thread.
One of them has said she has mental health issues.

I do wonder if some posters are frightened off by the posts they receive, more often than we realise.

Callistemon I noticed your absence and really missed you. So glad you’re back.
How dare anyone order you off the site. They have the problem, not you flowers

I second that maddyone, Callistemon imo, you are a great poster, balanced views and a good sense of humour.

I'm shocked that anyone would take it upon themselves to order another poster off the site. As in life, we're not always going to agree with each other all of the time.

Callistemon21 Sat 15-Jun-24 14:04:21

Thanks Terribull and maddyone

fancythat I think you would need to be very naive not to know that if you post on a forum, any forum, the response you get may nt be what you want/expect.

However I think sometimes with these desperate ones, people open threads in their night of despair anywhere and on anything and then never come back to any of them to see if they get a reply or if they look, if the reply/s are not the one they want, 'Yes, you are wonderful and are fully justified cutting your son and daughter out of your life because you didn't see your first grandchild before they were 10 minutes old' or whatever. They just do not bother to come back.

That's not right, Cornflower, you shouldn't leave a thread just because you see a certain name on it. That means they've won and you are left feeling deflated. But I do sort of understand.
There's a couple of names who make me roll my eyes, but no one currently makes me scared and upset.

This ^

Of course there are some names that make one roll eyes and think "smug know-it-all" but that's life, take the wonderful and brush away the crumbs.

Indeed.

No I'm not scared but my pet hate is the posters who seem to only post to correct or be sarcastic towards others.

They must surely scare some of the more timid posters away.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 15-Jun-24 16:26:41

I’ve just posted what I thought and got zapped 😀😀😃

I know of more than a couple that have left, because every time they posted an opinion on something they got jumped on. It became very wearying, they didn't need that in their lives.
It's a pity, their pisrs could be interesting and often entertaining. .

Of course, those jumping from their lofty heights are often still posting.

Callistemon - I’d noticed your absence and assumed you had escaped our awful weather for sunnier places. I’m shocked anyone could tell you to leave - how very dare they.

Iam64 Sat 15-Jun-24 18:36:43

And - I’ve caught up with this thread and enjoyed lots of comments. I find it interesting to see the views of others. I generally hang out with family and friends who share many similar views and interests. This doesn’t mean we always agree and leads to interesting discussions -like here

Galaxy Sat 15-Jun-24 18:53:49

Oh sorry I missed that Callistemon, we agree on some things and disagree on others, I always enjoy your posts.
There is something about the fact that we as a society seem to have become unable to 'hear' those with different views. Its something to do with politics becoming an identity I think.
I hope she doesnt mind me mentioning it, as I often use her as an example, but I have very different politics to GSM but I always find her posts very interesting.

This resonates with me. My politics are different to GSM but I value her posts. As for kindness and support for others GSM is a poster I admire.
I’d missed Callistemon but been preoccupied with my own health stuff so not asked where you are Calli

Yes she is kind, I have had quite a few fights with anniebach too but I think she is kind poster. But I will probably now be deleted for talking about other posters grin.
Take care Iam64, hope things improve flowers

annsixty Sat 15-Jun-24 19:38:45

A couple of years ago a poster on a thread I posted on regularly told another fairly new poster that she should stop posting.
She did and I have never forgotten the blatant unfairness of it.
I have never posted on that thread since.
However I did not report it or comment at the time.
Cowardice or self preservation as I wanted to stay on GN?

rafichagran Sat 15-Jun-24 19:56:16

Annesixty that is horrible and the poster really overstepped, did she/he give a reason?
Also why did the other poster accept this. I would have told that person to do one and would have carried on posting.
No one should be scared on here.
