I was the ripe old age of 19 which was not unusual at the time but now couples seem to wait and wait if they bother at all. A lot of ‘older mums’ around now, too. It was very unusual for someone to become a first time mum in their 40 s in those days. I remember being described as an ‘elderly multipara’ when I had my 4 th at the ancient age of 31. I was quite hurt by the description at the time. What on earth do they call people now ?

Just after my 21st birthday, DH was 31. We were married for 50 years.
My neighbours around us in those early years were much the same ages.

19, husband was 21. Had our oldest son about ten months later. Wouldn’t change a thing. We had five of our own and are now going on nine grands , as we’ve had quite the baby boom the last few years. All but one of ours is currently married and all did so between 21-25. We’ve one lone single 24 year old left and my guess is there’s an engagement on the way there too.

So many young brides! I was happy single, and got married at 28, my husband was 34. I had my first baby at 32, and my second at 39 - it was so easy with a big gap between them, they never fell out and are the best of friends still.

Married just before I was 19, DH was 23. 54 years on there are 5 children and 9 grandchildren. Our children think we were crazy, they could well be right but it’s worked for us! smile

16, first child a year later.

My husband was 18.

Did you run away to Gretna Green?
That always sounded so romantic!

No. In my home Catholic parish Church. I finished school.

We've been to GG for some anniversaries (last was our 60th).

I met my DH when I was 29 , he was 33 and we were married a year later . Most of our friends also married around the same time . This was 1989. We had loads of weddings in 1989 and 1990.
I had a brilliant time in my twenty’s, partying, holidays , festivals. Plus I hadn’t met anyone I wanted to spend my life with.

We were both nineteen and a half - married in February 1964, first child in September 1965, second in August 1968. Of the eight girls in my year at secondary modern school - four married before I did, one married later that year , one didn't marry until she was in her late 30's. Two have died (one in an accident in her late 20's, after she'd divorced), one died ten years ago (still married to original husband), three of us still married to our 'original' husband.
Daughter married at 21, was 36 when she had her first son and 42 when she had her second son. Son married at age 42.

I was 27 when we married, as was my husband.
We didn't meet until we were both 25 years old, engaged 14 months later, married a year after that and parents in well under 2 years from our wedding day!
We spent almost six months living together between the engagement and the wedding, just to make sure!

How I wish living together first had been acceptable where I lived, and to my father’s very snobbish family, back in the late sixties. But then I wouldn’t have had my lovely son, so I can’t regret it.

I got married at 19, husband was 21 on the actual day. Terrible wedding, I was Catholic 4 months pregnant, marrying non Catholic in Glasgow, met the inlaws day of the wedding ( had previously met his siblings just not the parents). Married in December at 5pm when it was dark so no one would see us, my mother was horrified. 52 years later still married with 2 sons, 51 and 47. Its been a journey but amazing what we were able to achieve over the years. And there are no wedding photos!!!

SillyOma , what a pity your families didn’t make your wedding joyous. Different times. Its worked out so you did something right. Do hope you’ve made up for it since. 💐

Oh SillyOma that must have been horrible at the time. What a guilt trip! One of my daughters is in a long term relationship and they have a daughter together but neither are interested in getting married. How times change,eh? Personally I would love them to marry - just want a good party is all . 🎉
