How old were you when you got married( if you are married )?

I was the ripe old age of 19 which was not unusual at the time but now couples seem to wait and wait if they bother at all. A lot of ‘older mums’ around now, too. It was very unusual for someone to become a first time mum in their 40 s in those days. I remember being described as an ‘elderly multipara’ when I had my 4 th at the ancient age of 31. I was quite hurt by the description at the time. What on earth do they call people now ?

I was 22 and DH 21, we’d been together 3years and 3 days when we got married 42 years ago. We waited until dh finished his apprenticeship. Don’t quite know where the years have gone.

Prior to our wedding we attended an engaged couple group at the church my dh attended and one of the questions all three couples were asked was “how long should you wait before having children?” One couple said 12-18 months the other couple gave 18months-2 years. I said 5 years Dh said 10 years no wonder the priest looked shocked, a good catholic boy saying to wait 10 years. Our first baby arrived 10 days before our 6th wedding anniversary

I married 3 weeks after my 21st birthday.
I would have married on my birthday but in those far off days, 1958, we could only take two weeks holiday in August when the place closed for two weeks.
The other reason was that my widowed mother would not give her permission which was required then until the age of 21.
My H was 22.
We were married for over 60 years until he died.

Me too, annsixty, and the Bodach was 25 in 1973.We had our first child in 1975.
It’s funny when I think of the horror of two of my classmates when we had to take our birth certificates to school before our ‘O’ level exams and they discovered that their parents had only been married six months before they were born! It’s quite common now for children to attend their parents’ wedding. Changed days, right enough.

21 in 1977 and turned out to be big mistake. Lovely to read of all the lasting marriages on here and this thread. You should be proud of yourselves.

We married in 1963. My hubby was 19, I`d just turned 20. First baby born 5 months after wedding (oops!) She was 13 months on the day that her sister was born. On my first visit to the ante natal clinic with my 2nd, they gave me details of the family planning clinic!

I was 18 and first year at uni, DH was 20 and also a student. DS was born just 2 days before my 20th birthday. I was not pregnant when we married. Finished uni degree after taking a year out. We have been married for 56 years now.

It didn't stop the counsellor describing in embarrassing, childishly worded detail what we should be doing. I just remember front bottoms, thingamejigs and back bottoms being mentioned.

Bumface, that's hilarious - although I'm certain it must have been cringe-making at the time.shock

JamesandJon33 Fri 14-Jun-24 13:55:32

Hellogirl your first sentence could have been me. We waited six years for baby 2. Just to get on our feet really. We have been together 60 years now. I’m just getting over the shock

I was 21, DH 25. We had known each other 6 weeks when he proposed and 10 months when we married.

54 years, 5 children and 9 grandchildren later and we are still going strong.

Norah Fri 14-Jun-24 14:05:01

16, first child a year later.

My husband was 18.

Did you run away to Gretna Green?
That always sounded so romantic!

I was 19 and one month exactly the first time. By the time I was 26 I was divorced.

Second time I was 47 and next week is my 20th anniversary - it's been a wonderful marriage... grin

I was 21 and just finished my SRN training, DH 24 was working but also studying. My parents were not too happy but he had moved to London and it was really a convenience ,as living together was not quite the norm then . We had very little but we managed.
DD was born when I was 24 and DS at 28. We were married 49 years ,he died four and a half years ago.
Nowadays it seems very young to marry , DC married at 32 and 37 but they both lived together beforehand.
Most of my nursing friends married soon after qualifying so there was a continuous stream of weddings to attend, there was much swapping and borrowing of outfits!

I was 25, DH 32. Babies at 26,29 & 33. I was an only child born when my Mum was 39 & Dad 32. Because of that I didn’t want to be an ‘older ‘ Mum nor have just an only child. We just made it to 38 years when DH died. For our 40 anniversary I bought myself an expensive painting in lieu of the ruby ring (which he would never have bought me in a 100 years 😀).

Hellogirl1 Fri 14-Jun-24 15:54:21

It would have been our 61st anniversary next month, but David died in October 2016, so we clocked up just over 53 years, with 5 children.

MiniMoon Fri 14-Jun-24 15:56:26

Gosh we were old, both 30. We married in 1982. I'd spent my time in various jobs and then working for my nursing qualification. We weren't ready for marriage any sooner. I had our daughter 9 months later and our son in 1984.

I agree, but I’m struggling to think why the ‘back bottom’ had to be mentioned!

Just 29; DW was 24, but 25 by the end of the honeymoon. Golden wedding last year.

Purplepixie Fri 14-Jun-24 16:12:45

I foolishly married when I was 18 years old much to my parents despair, yet they paid for a white wedding. He turned out to be a pig and a wife beater! I then married the second husband at the age of 53 and remained happy ever since. Three children and now 4 grand children.

I married my husband on my 21st birthday, he was 25. We have 4 children, 2 of each with help of fertility drugs. We have been together since I was 17 and I'm 59 in September.

62Granny Fri 14-Jun-24 16:43:22

We married after a courtship of 4 years, I was 20 he was 23 in 1978, we bought our house the year before but we're not allowed to live together , we lived there for nearly 39 years only moving to our new home because of illness. Still together ❤

We had a hilarious interview (in retrospect) with a fertility counsellor to make sure we were "Doing it properly".

Obviously we found the recipe before we faced that embarrassment 😃
