What spelling mistake do you hate/notice the most?

The problem with spellcheckers is that if the word is a correct spelling of an actual word it will not register as incorrect. More advanced spellcheckers can spot the context but not always. An ability to spell is still required!

Oh dear - an “e”

I must admit that I am a culprit for occasionally misspelling their and there. I have a mental block and have to really think which one to use - sorry.
I learnt to use the correct stationary/stationery by thinking stationery has a “e” for envelope.

Not a printed one but secutary and Febuary 😡

How about MOT’s ? I’ve seen that blasted apostrophe more frequently than a sign without!
There really is no excuse for printed signs is there?

So many GNs have been saying ‘Trooping OF the Colour” this morning!

All of those already mentioned annoy me! And seperate instead of separate; definate instead of definite; preditor instead of predator.

This thread should be compulsory reading for ‘some posters’.

It doesn’t matter how often anyone posts about loose/lose, the ‘sinners’ gaily go on doing it.

I forgot rein and reign - so often confused. ‘Reigning it in’ or putting ‘reigns’ on a toddler.

And while I’m at it, phased instead of fazed.

This thread should be compulsory reading for ‘some posters’.

I’m another! It seems a very common mistake.

That’s awful, puzzlelove - does nobody use proofreaders any more? Or is a case of proofreaders being unable to spell, too? A printed ‘classic’ I once saw was a Mother’s Day card saying, ‘If Mum’s were flowers, I’d pick you!’

My pet annoyances are loose for lose, the muddling of affect/effect, discreet/discrete, uninterested/disinterested, and all those plurals of words ending in Y - baby’s, family’s, party’s, etc. Not to mention plurals of the odd one ending in a consonant - bus’s, box’s…..

Just as well I’ve always managed to suppress the urge to correct anybody!

Received an email this morning from a well known greeting card from that I use. Why don’t these mistakes get noticed? I hate seeing this spelling mistake.

As for the OP, I was taught at Grammar School to remember that stationery had an 'e' in it for envelope. I have never forgotten it. Texting has a lot to answer for.

Accommodation.

I was kept in detention at Grammar School (no pun intended) for misspelling.
Missed the bus home and as we had no phone, Mum was worried something had happened.
I’ve never, ever misspelled it since and it annoys me how estate and hospitality agents, who must use it every day, can still get it wrong. 🤷
