What spelling mistake do you hate/notice the most?

I hate ect too.

Fuschia instead of fuchsia, even done by plant nurseries! The plant is named for a gent name of Fuchs.

Also discrete/ discreet, fazed/phased, etc etc.

I remember fun mornings during COVID when Miss Marydoll ran her Maffs Klass and I, Doodle, Squiffy, Oops, Charleygirl and countless others all had fun misspelling our posts phonetically, quite often to rude effect😂

English is a fascinating language with lots of different pronunciations of the same letters, surely some leeway with spelling can be given in most instances?

I always wonder, do people not read books and absorb correct spelling and grammar? I suspect not.

No I don’t think people absorb it but am rapidly coming to the conclusion that bad spelling and/or grammar are not unique to our century. But before the advent of Social Media we generally only read what we saw in books, newspapers or letters from friends and family.
As a teacher I used to get letters from parents excusing their child’s absence (flue/flew and the classic dire rear )which raised a smile but other than perhaps a poorly written receipt or bill from a tradesman, I just did not realise how many adults have poor literacy skills.

Children do still have to learn their spellings at school but perhaps forget what they are taught as quickly as they forget the dates of long ago kings and queens as they fail to see the relevance.
Secretaries who prided themselves on their accuracy used to be adept at correcting their bosses’ spelling and grammar but most people write their own emails and letters - without checking. And spell-checkers/predictive text are a recipe for (often surreal) disaster.
So, do we value accurate spelling and grammar?
If we don’t there is no incentive to “get it right” is there?

Perhaps empathy, understanding, kindness, forgiveness, sensitivity, acknowledgement of diversity, avoidance of superiority, valuing others for who they are, an interest in others’ views and ideas however expressed, and tolerance are more important?

Advice/advise is another.

Good advice is nice, but you should be wise if you presume to advise.

You can be and do all that, but still get quietly irritated by endless basic mistakes, like loose/lose.

I’ve only ever corrected anyone once, and that was on another, largely male forum, when a poster had corrected someone else - and made a basic mistake in his own post!

I think the clue there is in your comment “quietly irritated” - ie a bit of a silent eye roll, and then moving on.

I’m a competent speller, but I would never dream of picking someone up on their spelling. Surely it’s just rude?

Spell check is my go to ! Even then I make mistakes ,
If I notice a mistake I wouldn’t dream of posting a correction, even if I have to read the post a few times to make sense

I am much better at spelling than my AC but oh, how much better than me are they at technology. We all have our strengths and weaknesses but we can all still value a well- written and grammatically correct piece of writing.

Sorry, Petra, but I haven't got it the wrong way round and sorry for not responding sooner. Probably I didn't explain clearly.

I often find in books that they use the metal name "lead" when they want to say something like someone "led the way" - "led" is the past tense of "to lead".

It wasn’t me who came up with the word Pantglas, I got detention after saying I’d just discovered what a stiffgit is. I think she thought I’d been up to something behind the bike sheds!
