Nothing wrong with a waterpistol, or a waterspraybottle. I once even threw (half a bucket of) soapy water in the direction of a stray cat - that worked I have to say 😉But I always heard cats don't s**t where they get food.. leaving out some kibble might help?

It’s said that the scent of male human’s pee stops cats messing in your garden if you have an obliging male family member (for the sake of modesty they could always decant into a watering can I guess)

I read that used coffee grounds work, but dont know if it would? It may be the smell that deters them. I know cats dislike cucumbers you could try that.

If there's any bare earth in my garden one of the many neighbourhood cats will be sure to use it so I always cover bare earth with a criss cross of twigs, branches etc - I keep a supply of them when pruning. Foxes also come, I've trodden in fox poo several times and have walked it into the house. I have chicken wire round my veg beds and have recently spent £30 buying more to put round flower beds. It is now difficult to fill my bird feeders because of the chicken wire that keeps the cats (one in particular) from walking over a flower bed and lying under the feeders.

I recently had a large bed at the side of my drive cleared of old plants in readiness for replanting with heathers. Almost as soon as the gardener had finished and gone, one of the local moggies used it as a toilet! I shall cover it with weed control fabric to deter them, but they do the same with a large planter by the front door once it’s empty, so I put pyracantha branches over it until I’m ready to plant it up again.

We’re trying lion poo to dissuade the cat next door from coming in and catching the birds.

Please can a cat owner who lets their cat out to roam the area give us justification as to why it is ok for their cat to poo in other folks gardens?

Unfortunately there is no definite solution. We use a mixture of ultrasonic devices, water pistols (having them ready loaded on an upstairs windowsill helps), handfuls of gravelly soil which will scare but do not injure, and holly and mahonia leaves in certain places.

I long for the day when allowing cats to roam freely is illegal, as I believe it is in parts of Australia.

There is a child of 6 or 7 years in a nearby town, blinded from cats mess. The family had never owned a cat, they moved into a house which had cats in neighbouring homes. How someone's right to let their cat shit in other people's gardens is more important than a child's sight is utterly beyond my comprehension.

Apparently Cats have a Right to Roam so there will be many many companies selling all sorts of weird and wonderful things to stop them pooing in gardens. I find prickly branches and short garden sticks are the best.

A cat can smell a dog and that keeps it away. I am a cat lover and had cats for many years, so dislike seeing some of the cruel deterrents mentioned here. I had a large garden and my cats didn’t roam. They were kept in at night.

I don’t think anyone would harm a cat, it’s just making light of the situation. My late father always said cats are on death row if they enter my garden. They are a nuisance when doing their business in gardens, especially when there are children around digging in the soil as they do.

I’ve had cats all my life but am now a convert to indoor cats. They have a Catio to go outside but can’t kill birds or other wildlife and they are safe from traffic, other cats’ fights, diseases and parasites. They can’t get lost or stolen. They can’t poo in my or neighbours’ gardens.
We don’t let our dogs run loose the way they used to. Cats will live a happy life safe at home.

Cats.....like dogs.... should not be allowed to roam freely. They live longer and healthier when either inside cats or on a leash.

This doesn't address your problem neighbours who let their animals roam willy-nilly.

Maybe live trap it and contact the neighbour each time to come and get their cat might get the message across??

I recently lost a tree so had quite an area of new earth in tge garden. Spitted a cat about to do its business in the new earth one evening but scared it off. Next day I scattered orange peel all over the ground and havent had any visitors since.

Plastic forks planted spikes up - doesn’t allow the cat to squat.

Not all dogs work. Trust me, mines made friends with them and plot against me. However the lavender, mint and lemon balm that surrounds her borders of my garden down each edge does have an affect. The only time they get in now is if they follow the dog in while we aren't watching and they stick to help path or gravel. The don't come over the fence any more.

rocketship I 'm not sure if your suggestion is serious but I wonder if you realise how much harm can be caused to a cat by inexperienced people attempting to trap?
Have you also considered that there are many, many cats on the streets who have to fend for themselves because they have been dumped or born to cats that no-one has bothered to have neutered. They don't have the luxury of being indoor cats.

Scatter orange peel around where the cat dirties, it really does work, at least it has for me , thankfully.

I agree Calipso. So much misunderstanding of cats and so many cruel suggestions here.

This worked for us against next doors cat who used our lawn for his loo.

Upside down plastic forks in your pots and around your plants. Works wonders

Going into the garden after dark to bring in washing I'd forgotten about I spotted a dark brown animal sat on my bench. I honestly thought it was a rat as it was asleep facing forward with its head down. I screamed loudly when it moved and then realised it was a cat. It ran the fastest I've ever seen a cat run, down the garden, up over the gate, shot past OH who was unloading the car in the front garden, and ran
straight up the street. I actually like cats BTW but that one has never entered our garden since. Perhaps screaming would put them off coming idk. We still laugh about it now.

Buy a box of cheap plastic picnic forks and place them at random in flower beds. That helps a bit.
My neighbour has 4 cats and no garden. I have tried everything to keep his cats out including a 6 foot fence with trellis. My 6 foot gate has been clawed to shreds. I’ve tried special granules and a solar appliance on a post but nothing deters them. He also puts bread out daily along his garden wall to feed the pigeon. I have become a grumpy old woman since living here.
