Claiming expenses for work related trips.

It was on a Mumsnet thread. The teacher went ona school trip to Switzerland where expenses are usually included. He had to pay £200 extra and was told he cant claim it back.

When you see a thread where a parent complains about the cost of trips someone usually pops up and points out that staff expenses are covered. Obviously there need to be staff present on a trip and one would not expect them to pay their own expenses. They are not on holiday and probably fully engaged looking after the children.

I assumed, you get a daily allowance from your employer? I did plus if it eat into your day off we got the day back in lieu.

I’d be very surprised by this and would question its authenticity.
I had a company credit card when I travelled for work.

I was sent on a course in the holidays necessary to my job and the authority said I had to pay half the cost. My headmistress insisted the school made up the other half, and the Governors agreed.
A different authority, and if we went on a course we were given a list of attendees and instructed to contact them and arrange car-sharing, no matter where they lived, and only one person out of four was allowed to claim. Strangely, people stopped going on courses.
My most recent school, the head threw a wobbly when four new teachers spent their Saturday visiting a local attraction for a risk assessment, preparatory to taking their classes there, and claimed petrol and the cost of a coffee each. He very reluctantly agreed but would only pay petrol from the school, not their homes and gave them a severe dressing down in front of other staff.

I was very naive on my first tenured job as an academic. I was going to a 3 day conference in Las Vegas and the travel dept guy said "oh we will have to buy a ticket for 7 days." I asked if I had to fund the extra days at the hotel myself and he looked shocked. "No, its not your choice to go for 7 days. It would be a lot more expensive for us to get a ticket for only 3 days." So I got 4 extra days in Las Vegas. I only had to pay for entertainment such as a trip to se the Grand Canyon and a night club. Everything else was on the Uni.

I had a boss who did not like long flights so I went to the USA twice and subsequently all over Europe to present at conferences. I dont know whether academics still have such generous expenses.

As a self employed person I now claim everything I possibly can down to the last cup of coffee and the last paper clip.

I saw that thread too....the partner was saying he wouldn't ASK to reclaim expenses .....but like everything there will be one sides version....the others side version....and the truth ....so you'll never know

I well remember when the NHS dropped the '£10 rule'.
This was a very sensible system - if you were at a conference / training and needed to stay overnight, many people would be able to stay with a friend or relative in the area. You were given £10 to buy them a drink, flowers whatever, no receipt needed.
I had such a trip booked when the rule was dropped because of potential misuse. Like most nurses, I rarely went on such a trip - twice in my whole career.
SO - it was suggested that I booked a stay at a B&B - £75 AND claimed my dinner expenses., so I could produce receipts. Of course I didn't - I stayed at my friend's and claimed nothing! I never had another trip after that.
It did amuse me though - pay best part of £100 just in case a nurse MIGHT claim £10 to which she wasn't entitled!

When I was working for the NHS, computers had just started to filter through into the workplace. None of the secretarial staff had ever used one, we were used to electric typewriters and that was all. We were told that we had to attend training sessions on how to use the computer which I was looking forward to then they dropped the bombshell, we had to pay for the sessions ourselves.

I was the only one who refused saying if they wanted me to use a computer then they would have to pay for my training.

I just carried on in my normal job and did not have access to the computer. When I retired 23 years ago my late husband had a computer system bought for his birthday and I learned to use it myself. I am now self taught and computer literate but any company who wants a member of staff to go anywhere for their job must pay their expenses.
