Missing lad in Tenerife, Jay Slater

It’s every parents worst nightmare isn’t it? Our teens get to the stage of wanting to go away on holiday with a group of friends, and most of the time of course everything is fine and they have a great time.

This lad’s parents though must be suffering agonies. I do hope he’s soon found safe and well.

Over £30k? Madness. Reading what has been said about him on here, I wonder if that is part of the plan?

GrannyGravy13 Sat 22-Jun-24 11:51:54

I have just seen this 🙊🙉🙈

Jaxjacky Sat 22-Jun-24 11:53:16

I’m not surprised GG, sadly. Thanks.

Interesting …

maddyone Sat 22-Jun-24 11:56:57

Oh, the mystery deepens.
A Go Fund Me scam, possibly.

There is definitely more than a suggestion of that. As the saying goes 'if you fly with the crows, you get shot with the crows'...

This sounds like a mystery worthy of Hercule Poirot. There's a lot we don't know.

OldFrill Sat 22-Jun-24 12:01:26

Yes, they stayed a day extra to speak to police then returned to the UK.

Trying to resist the urge to be an armchair detective - mostly successfully. But, and this is just a personal observation and is not based on any known facts in this case - I find it rather odd that a young teen of 19 would separate himself from his peers and go off with two much older men.

I believe the younger of the two men was in his 30s - which is not old - but when I was 19, it seemed very old to me. And the other was about 40?

Not the kind of companions teenagers usually seek out.

I think that what is important is to know why he decided to back to their pad.

I could understand if he'd met up with another group of lads his own age and was going back to their B&B to "party"- that's what teens often do.

But to get in a car with two older men he'd only just met? What were they offering that was attractive to him?

Anyway, I shall not speculate further. Because things are not always what they seem to be and there is wild speculation already all over social media.

I had no idea about any of this when I started the thread.
A horrible back story indeed.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 22-Jun-24 12:51:49

Nor did I. All my information has been gleaned from this thread and it has certainly altered my view of him.

Gay sex maybe?

maddyone Sat 22-Jun-24 12:54:39

I had no idea about any of this when I added my comment JenniferEccles. I thought it was another Michael Mosley type situation, but it appears to be more complicated than that.
I still don’t think there’ll be a happy ending though.

All my children and grandchildren had been away on holidays with friends by age 17 /18 and yes me too
yes you do worry so much but you have to let them fly

I truly think he set off on a unforgiving and unattainable 10 hour walk to get back to base and just like Michael Mosley he completely misjudged the heat, the energy needed, the clothes and the distance

It was said in one of the reports that a bus service ran every 10 minutes and that the bus stop was close by where he had spent the night in the AirBnB.

If that is the case then why would he set out on a 10-hour hike when he could wait 10 minutes for a bus? And if he missed one, wait only 10 minutes for another...

I know teenagers can be pretty clueless at times - and adventurous, but this defies understanding.

- does that locality really run a 10 minute interval bus service? Kudos to them if they do. But the area is popular with hikers - who basically are on a hike for the heck of it. Maybe it just isn't true?

It's hard to separate fact from fiction in the media.

Drugs? If the story about the two men is true …

Spinnaker Sat 22-Jun-24 13:35:51

If it is drugs that he's involved in then what's the betting that as soon as the GFM reaches the amount needed to pay off any debt, he miraculously reappears. His mother will no doubt be aware of his lifestyle, which is why she's keen to keep the media spotlight on him, thus raising more money through GFM. What a scam !

pably15 Sat 22-Jun-24 13:38:26

The go fund me page was set up very quickly...

It’s altered my view of him too.

AGAA4 Sat 22-Jun-24 13:44:05

I don't want this young man to be found dead but the whole thing is very suspicious. If the scam story is true there has been a lot of time and money spent on searching for him.

maddyone Sat 22-Jun-24 13:45:03

It all sounds very unsavoury.

Casdon Sat 22-Jun-24 13:52:01

I keep thinking if the conspiracy theories that abounded when poor Nicola Bulley disappeared - this could yet be another social media generated conspiracy theory too.

It could indeed. But the part about him being a convicted criminal is true.

pably15 Sat 22-Jun-24 13:54:35

There's an article on the news saying his instagram has been accessed by someone since he went missing...It's all a bit strange..

The parents must be frantic with worry, especially after the death of Michael Mosley. Unfortunately we cannot wrap either our children or grandchildren in cotton wool.

I hope he is found safe and well.

with respect, this is nothing like the tragic death of Mosley, not even the same country.
