Missing lad in Tenerife, Jay Slater

It’s every parents worst nightmare isn’t it? Our teens get to the stage of wanting to go away on holiday with a group of friends, and most of the time of course everything is fine and they have a great time.

This lad’s parents though must be suffering agonies. I do hope he’s soon found safe and well.

Remember the faked kidnap of Shannon Matthews by her own mother and her boyfriend so they could get money from a funding scheme?

I keep thinking if the conspiracy theories that abounded when poor Nicola Bulley disappeared - this could yet be another social media generated conspiracy theory too.

It could indeed. But the part about him being a convicted criminal is true.

It’s not reported on any of the news channels that that is the case as far as I can see. Regardless, I can see the harm speculation does to the families of missing people.

As I understand it, his mother has already been likened to Matthews - not a great comparison is it ?

The rumours and allegations on Twitter are that the GFM is to pay the drug debt he owed, the woman Lucy is reported to be a well known drug dealer on Tenerife, boasting about how much money can be made. All very unsavoury, all just allegations of course, but he is still someone's son, however unpleasant the back story. Unbelievably, some are blaming the judge who gave the community sentence, saying that is he had given a custodial sentence then this would not have happened.

I like to think I am fairly worldly, but sometimes I feel as if I have lifted a stone on a world which I do not understand and is repellent.

There is a lot of speculation so I think I will reserve judgement until the facts are known.

I agree with you AGAA4. But if all the above is true, as seems likely, I wonder if we'll ever know?

I agree. This is so unknown to us Gransnetters (I assume) that we cannot imagine this situation at all.

My mother would have had a heart attack if she had known some of the places I visited!

My first trip abroad (1960s) was to Morocco with a friend. I told her we were flying to Gibralter so she would not worry. This was quite true but then we got the ferry over to Tangiers. In those days Morocco was not a mass tourist destination as it is now and very few package tours went there. No mobile phones back then of course.

Oh dear I had no idea of all his background my granddaughter has just told me, then I read it on here I really thought it was a simple case of misjudgement on his part I also didn’t know the buses went every 10 minutes I presumed he was out in the wilderness and they d be one a day
Whoah, a very different story and now with all this information I can imagine drugs are almost certainly involved he’s not the innocent little teen he looked apparently
Increases my thoughts to never give to a GFM

If Lucy is a well-known drug dealer on the island, she'd hardly be likely to demand that the British Police get involved in the search?

If it is drugs that he's involved in then what's the betting that as soon as the GFM reaches the amount needed to pay off any debt, he miraculously reappears. His mother will no doubt be aware of his lifestyle, which is why she's keen to keep the media spotlight on him, thus raising more money through GFM. What a scam !

What a scam
You don’t know that yet 🤷‍♀️

I was very upset about this missing boy at first especially as I live in Lancashire as well. The more I read about it though, if true, is he is deep into drugs, he took half the drugs he’d been given to sell and the rest was stolen so he was taken by someone until payment could be made. Now, whether this is true or not will emerge but it’s getting murkier and murkier. Why did his mum immediately say it was a kidnapping when the inference was that he was lost? It will all come out in the wash. I hope he’s ok but learns to keep away from drugs maybe.

SporeRB Sat 22-Jun-24 16:46:14

The Spanish police should take in his "best pal" for questioning. She is the one who set up the GO Fund Me page which is now freeze, she starts saying that she fears he is kidnapped and when she speaks to the media, she hides her face.
Why? Maybe she knows more about this case then she is letting on.

Purplepixie Sat 22-Jun-24 16:47:52

The truth will never be fully told but there are lots of stories on the internet. If it’s to be believed then he’s a thoroughly nasty evil piece of work. Sorry but what goes around comes around. I think he’s been snatched by someone he owes drug money to. I feel sorry for his mam.

BlueBelle Sat 22-Jun-24 16:49:16

I would think it’s high unlikely he s alright Dollymixture
After reading all the back story it’s not what it’s seemed at all
If the boy is mixed up in drug gangs he doesn’t stand a chance
Live by the sword and die by the sword I guess

Probably the best way.
It does seem a strange case at first glance. I’ve read that the bus stop was virtually outside the villa where he had been since the early hours. He asked a local man twice what time the bus came along and was told 10 a.m. ( not every ten mins!) the same local man saw him walking off down the road. That’s as far as the facts take us.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 22-Jun-24 17:01:41

MsBond’s horrible post reported.

BlueBelle Sat 22-Jun-24 17:05:30

I m sure she would hide her face and her proper name too I would think sporeRB if they are all caught up in drugs and machetes and gangs
Very different story

Sallywally1 Sat 22-Jun-24 17:49:06

I feel for the parents too and am worried about the boy, let’s leave speculation out of our comments.

As a passing thought it does make one realising the importance of making sure phones etc are fully charged and maybe have a charging bank on standby. They are fairly small and can provide some extra power in an emergency.

But 18 year old boys think they are invincible until they get into trouble. I know, I had one and he grew into a 34 year sensible and sensitive dad of two young children!

Iam64 Sat 22-Jun-24 18:31:10

I’ve just heard some yiung men / teens on their first holiday abroad without parents, interviewed on radio 4. They talked about being scared as a result of the missing 19 year old. It was like listening to my girls on their post A level trip, yes to Tenerife, yes first time without parents. These boys talked about setting rules in their group. We will always stay together - let’s hope they do

JenniferEccles Sat 22-Jun-24 18:48:40

What a distasteful story this is turning out to be.

I had initially just taken the facts at face value, that a teen had gone missing whilst on holiday abroad with friends.

Incidentally, his disappearance was the lead story on the BBC early evening news today but it just covered the continuing hunt for him with no mention at all of his past. I guess they wouldn’t though at this stage.

Cabbie21 Sat 22-Jun-24 18:57:58

I have read online that seven GFM fake pages have been set up for Jay and his mum posted begging people not to send any money as they are all scams.
It is hard to know if you can believe anything these days.
I will reserve judgment.
