Missing lad in Tenerife, Jay Slater

It’s every parents worst nightmare isn’t it? Our teens get to the stage of wanting to go away on holiday with a group of friends, and most of the time of course everything is fine and they have a great time.

This lad’s parents though must be suffering agonies. I do hope he’s soon found safe and well.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 22-Jun-24 19:26:29

First holidays for our brood.

One of ours went to Magaluf, ended up looking after a few friends with sunstroke.

One went snowboarding, fortunately no broken bones (he had been skiing/boarding for many years)

One went with their girlfriend, now wife.

The other two didn’t bother for a few years.

If you have any self-respect, and if you do not want to feel like a mug when the truth comes out - and it will - do the right thing and reserve judgement.

So many people, particularly older and more vulnerable (trusting), are scammed on a daily basis by unscrupulous thieves who con people into giving them their bank details, or even large amounts of cash. I could set a scam like that up so easily, and I would probably have a good 'success rate'; but I am not that way inclined, brought up differently in another era. The point is, gullibility is exploited at every opportunity.

There are so many theories on the disappearance of this lad that the truth is well and truly buried under blankets of garbage. Comments such as 'it seems plausible', 'it must be true', only express the reader's lack of knowledge and judgement; but it gives those posting such rubbish a feeling of empowerment.

Over the past 60+ years, I have witnessed a sad decline - older people who were brought up to trust others are being abused, while many younger people have had their brains sucked out by Social Media and MPA (Mobile Phone Addiction) - intelligence and analytical abilities are precious commodities, integrity and honesty are priceless.

I will only publish what I know to be true/fact, anything else belongs in the bin.

Jay Slater was convicted in 2023, along with a group of other youths, of attacking Tom Hilton, who was hit with a machete. There was a 'beef' between them but it was never disclosed in court exactly what that was.

www.lancs.live/news/lancashire-news/abandoned-paper-mill-100-kids-27461303

Jay Slater received an 18 month community order, 25 rehabilitation activity days, 150 hours unpaid work

Tom Hilton also has a criminal record.

www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/23418065.rishton-teen-jailed-stealing-car-taking-police-70mph-chase/

'Hilton eventually pleaded guilty to attempted burglary, theft of a motor vehicle and dangerous driving.
Hilton, who has 14 convictions for 28 offences, was jailed for 14 months, disqualified from driving for 25 months and must sit an extended re-test if he wants his licence back.
The court also heard that on committing these offences on February 12, Hilton was in breach of two community orders which had been imposed on him, one just three days earlier and one in November 2021 which was a two-year order.'

So if/when you read a comment stating that Slater was a bad 'un, there is more to it than a simple accusation. There was a group of up to 100 teenagers who congregated around the disused Paper Mill in Rishton, Lancashire. Alcohol and drugs were consumed at the illegal gatherings.

Set against the historical background, it has been easy for conspiracy theorists to conjure up numerous stories of what has happened in Tenerife, including accusations of Lucy Mae Law being involved with drug gangs there, and Jay Slater being drawn into that murky world in some way.
However, no-one offers credible evidence to support those accusations, but they have still gone viral on 'unsocial media'.

Whatever has happened, we will know when the Police have concluded their enquiries; but even then they might only be able to piece together certain elements.

Too many people want 'instant gratification', and will create their own narrative to fit what few facts are available.
It is a similar situation to that of Nicola Bulley, who lost her life in the River Wyre; that was a disgusting and disrespectful state of affairs.

Social Media is often far from social; more reminiscent of witch hunts and lynch mobs.

Let us all just wait and see.

Lancashire Live makes grim reading.

Very grim and very depressing.

JasmineH Sun 23-Jun-24 16:51:11

Yes, I read about this too.

OldFrill Sun 23-Jun-24 17:01:32

Those supporting the GoFundMe will deem any publicity good publicity.
It's now exceeded the target of £30,000, highlighting the power of social media and it's love of speculation.

GranWiAPlan Sun 23-Jun-24 18:05:49

Brian May and Freddie Mercury summed it up so poignantly.
Even just reading the words brings a tear to my eyes.
What have I left for my children, grandchildren, and great grandchild any day now.

Just look at all those hungry mouths we have to feed
Take a look at all the suffering we breed
So many lonely faces scattered all around
Searching for what they need

Is this the world we created?
What did we do it for?
Is this the world we invaded
Against the law?
So it seems in the end
Is this what we're all living for today?
The world that we created

You know that every day a helpless child is born
Who needs some loving care inside a happy home
Somewhere, a wealthy man is sitting on his throne
Waiting for life to go by

Oh-oh, is this the world we created?
We made it on our own
Is this the world we devasted, right to the bone?
If there's a God in the sky, looking down
What can he think of what we've done
To the world that He created?

Maybe lack of common sense it does seem the two guys that left early may know more perhaps more buildings and cars should be searched who knows as time goes on it doesn't look good do any of you think it could be a revenge attack ??

comrade Sun 23-Jun-24 18:21:17

If he has a part-spent criminal conviction, how did Spanish border police let him enter the country?

Youngnanny Sun 23-Jun-24 18:22:26

Yes, I think there’s more to this, hope he’s ok, time w tell

valdali Sun 23-Jun-24 18:37:30

Gran Wi'a Plan - more power to your elbow. Totally agree with your posts. It's great that governments /those in power can't con us any more because of social media.but the downsides are huge. I hope they get Jay back alive, but how many youngsters drown in the channel / mediterranean / killed in Gaza everyday without a mention, let alone £30k + being raised from strangers in their name. Charity was the model in Victorian times, it was overtaken by entitlement (benefits / social contract) 100- 70 years ago, now we're back to charity model again, only those on the recieving end, rather than saying " I don't need your charity" even if they obviously did, are seeing themselves as clever by getting as much as possible via the charity route for their sob story.

Curtaintwitcher Sun 23-Jun-24 18:51:59

This is interesting....I've learned a lot just from reading your posts. This is more than just your usual missing person.

It does seem unlikely that someone would set off on a 10 hour walk in unknown territory. The suggestion is possibly that he wanted to 'disappear' so he could make a fresh start somewhere? If he has a criminal record, this could well be the case.

keepingquiet Sun 23-Jun-24 18:54:33

I don't know too much about this story tbh, but I am remembering the media storms surrounding Maddie McCann, Shannon Matthews and more recently Nicola Bully.
There has always been bad mouthing and gossip driven speculation not to say wacky conspiracy theories shared by saddoes whose lives lack and real excitement.
As with all the above and with Michael Moseley, there are real people involved in this- family, friends and possibly those who know more than they are letting on. Let's leave the armchair speculation alone and let people whose job it is to find stuff out, get on with their work.

He was sentenced to 180 hrs community work in 2021 I think the sentence is spent.

On a practical note, what exactly is the Gofundme page for?
His friends, staying out there until there's ‘news’ , do they not have jobs to go back to?
The Queen song was written for LiveAid referencing poverty in Africa.

There has been a lot of background information on MN, about a court case when a 17 year old teen was chased by a terrifying mob of thugs, a machete was used to split victim`s skull, smirking in court and also just giving etc.

Do the research, it's easy enough. I live 10 minutes from where this happened.

I think Jay Slater is more than capable of taking care of himself.

The X accounts of his friends make interesting reading.

He has a conviction along with four friends for attacking a 17 year old boy with a machete, axe and golf club. The victim had his skull split.

The full story is not what you expect. Have a read.

The GoFundMe is "To get Jay Slater Home" it was created by his friend Lucy Mae and the beneficiary is Jay's mother. No money has been withdrawn.

So his community order is in place until February 2025. As far as I can tell, this counts as unspent:

www.gov.uk/tell-employer-or-college-about-criminal-record/community-service

Upon further research, it looks like this shouldn't prevent entry into Spain, although a certificate from Lancashire Police would have been required by the Guardia when considering his entry (at the airport).

Another thing I was wondering is what kind of club is the PapaGayo where he was seen late Sunday? This review mentions "a lot of gay people":

www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g562820-d3499139-r434406033-Papagayo_Tenerife-Playa_de_las_Americas_Arona_Tenerife_Canary_Islands.html

It also appears on a couple of lists of "best LGBTQIA+ friendly bars in Tenerife". I don't mean to be insensitive but is it an LGBTQ club? That could explain him going home with two middle-aged gentlemen.
