Takeaways are rip offs

A 13.5” pizza at £24.99 is definitely a rip off. I can’t afford takeaways but if I could I wouldn’t buy one.

Why is a takeaway lazy when a restaurant meal isn't?

Last week after a journey was delayed by road closures, I looked at my watch, we were running over an hour late and said DH lets have lunch out, it will be such a rush to get it when we get home - and we did. I would have thought hat that was just as 'lazy' as a takeaway.

A good portion of fish and chips from the chippy, collected and eaten at home is an entirely different meal to fish and chips in a restaurant or prepared at home.

It is a pity that you recent takeaway f&c was not very good, but how many Chippy's are there in the country? there are many thousands of excellent chip shops country wide. Would you condemn all Indian food because you once had a curry from a poor retaurant?

Anyway, I suspect you just made your post in order to set the cat among the pigeons - and very successful it has been.

David49 - that means the 49% of Brits who have takeaway food at least 4 times a week, are ‘lazy’. There may be many reasons for that, not laziness, as you suggest. I have a takeaway about once a fortnight. I live on my own and sometimes, after a long day, it’s easier to pick up a Macdonalds or KFC on my way back from wherever.

Maggiemaybe I also use Chef Akila and have gifted their £49 meal delivery to friends and family. They are good and not as salty or oily as most.

You are wrong David49. Most of us do cook for ourselves very often, but we are allowed a takeaway/meal out whenever we choose.

What a dreadful insinuation David49, surely it is one of the joys in life to decide how to spend our own time/money on whatever we want especially in the GN phase of life!

There’s nothing wrong or lazy about having a takeaway occasionally. You could say the same about eating out.

Plus buying from them gives a free meal for someone in India.

For anyone else out there who, like me, loves Indian food, I’d definitely recommend Chef Akila. The meals arrive frozen, ready to be microwaved, but it’s proper food made from the best ingredients. It’s healthy too, as the recipes were devised with the help of her doctor son. We discovered them in lockdown (as with so many things) and still put in a regular order.

Iam64 - our local Thai restaurants use a paste (bought in) which contains fish or fish sauce. They use it in the curries mainly.
One Thai restaurant, sadly too far away, actually knows that vegetarians don't want it and makes this paste themselves without the fish.

One local restaurant insisted that their dish was vegetarian until I said "please can you read the ingredients on your curry paste". It was listed as vegetarian on the menu.

I don't know about your restaurants, obviously.

We occasionally have a takeaway either Indian or Chinese which are both good, the Indian naan bread is delicious. We also have 2 fish and chip shops, the nearest one to us also makes pizzas and kebabs, their chicken shish is yummy.

Never eat takeaways apart from fish & chips possibly 3 or 4 times a year. A few weeks ago however, I bought a ready meal, it was a Charlie Bingham curry which was fine , but not having to prep, cook and wash up was delicious! May well do this again soon

With the exception of fish and chips we have a take away rarely, the last one we had was in lockdown, it was barely edible.
We have however had meal boxes from Dishoom, absolutely fantastic and worth every penny.

During COVID lockdown we tried to support local businesses and had three deliveries over the months. One was a brunch from a local hotel. It was delicious. The next was a complete Burns Night meal. Also very good. The last was an Easter afternoon tea. Excellent. These were all one offs really and expensive but definitely not rip offs. We'd never consider having a Chinese or Indian delivery.

We get take away burgers from a visiting van. They are fabulous - quite expensive but worth every penny. And we have a fish and chip shop in a nearby village which does the most delicious gluten free fish and chips.

I suppose it all depends on where you get your takeaways from - we’d choose a restaurant based on past experience/recommendations/online reviews, so we’d do the same for any takeaway food as well.

Were you unaware of the use of MSG in Chinese cooking?
That's a bit like complaining your fish from the chippy was covered in batter!

In my family we always all get together ...mainly here....for a takeaway on our birthdays and it's usually an Indian. I always have a vegetarian option and it's delicious!

What was the 'stress of the delivery'?

Around here, it is literally cheaper to go out for some meals, than get a takeaway.
Bit of a shame in my opinion.

We have an excellent Indian Chinese and an excellent Indian near us...we never go to others as we are happy with these....delivery is always good ...all order complete and hot ...find one you like and use it all the time

I live five minutes drive from the famous Manchester curry mile. We have access to all the city center restaurants as well. We have an Indian, Thai or Chinese meal about every couple of months and have never had a bad one. Its not cheap but we do it for a treat.

No takeaways here apart from pizza. It would be lovely after a hard day's work to ring up and order a Chinese or Indian meal. Can't have everything I suppose as we live in a very peaceful rural area.
