Angela Rayner ghastly trouser suit

How do people know what page they're on? Early on in my GN life I discovered you could bump up the number of posts on a page in a thread to 100. I did that. I also caused every thread to be flipped. After page one the OP is at the top and then the latest posts, last first and previous ones going backwards in time, so to speak.

I never know what page I'm on. Well..... actually.... in a way I do. I'm on the up-to-date page.

Sometimes I join a thread when it has been trundling along for a while so I see the OP (What The Thread Was About Initially) and up to a hundred recent posts. That is what I base my posts on, not all the angst intelligent conversation in between. Quite often What The Thread Was About Initially has changed, as it has here. Most posters are no longer talking about AR's trouser suit but what they see as related topics.

This ⬆️ is how Gransnet threads work. Any fuss or upsettedness about the direction a thread has taken after several hundred posts therefore baffles me completely.

I’m in an old pair of pj’s at the mo and fluffy socks but must get a move on as things to do and people to see.

Well, Baggs, so far still in my night clothes but I'll put on a pair of blue Baggy Trousers as I'm going for a scan. Will I have to roll up my trousers? I've never had one before.

It's quite chilly, so a vest, a top, a warm cardi and a waterproof. Perhaps even socks. Layers.

Back to trousers. You don't see French ladies wearing baggy trousers (I'm thinking of Brigitte Macron here). They all wear those pencil thin cargo type trousers. YET, the French word for trousers is pantaloons! (sp)

Rachel Reeves looked smart and business like. Ready to go.

I’m still wearing pyjamas and I’ve got a hot water bottle. I’ve got a UTI which is resisting treatment so back to the doctor later today. I’ll have to put my trousers on for that. Don’t know whether to put my jeans on, or just go in my joggers. I don’t feel like making any effort.

Angela's trouser suit is mentioned in The Guardian (Monday). Zoe Williams has written an entertaining opinion piece about the focus on 'Labour Women' and their clothing - she thinks it's all very 1950s sexist nonsense.

This made me chuckle...

Are the outfits too expensive for a socialist? Or did Rayner just wear a suit that was too loud for a built-up area?

I can’t imagine us ever reaching a point where that stops happening, whether people see it as a throwback to the 1950s, or for that matter the 1750s, because it’s just the way we are. I don’t think it’s a party political issue, whoever was in power would be critiqued. If only we could keep it just to the clothes, we’d have moved forward a long way.

The men only come under the spotlight if they discard the uniform suit and wear a donkey jacket or whatever it was that Corbyn wore at the Cenotaph for which he was criticised. I'm not a fan of Corbyn however it was interesting to note that after the ceremony when all the other politicians and big-wigs hastened out of the rain to luncheon, Corbyn stayed outside talking to the service men and women.

Maybe that was his plan and why he didn't wear the obligatory suit. Who knows.

I think you’ve misunderstood me ronib. Critique of the government can be divorced from what individuals wear, on a thread that is about the latter. I wasn’t suggesting there should be no critique of the government on relevant threads, that would be ridiculous!

merlotgran i have just opened GN to post exactly the same saying on this thread. We clearly read the same newspaper.

My father must have been an extraordinary man in his time, Casdon as his big love was always clothing (other than Mum and I of course).

He spent all his demob spare cash on new clothes after the war - including a very pale, very full, cream long tie-belted fine wool and cashmere coat - that my mum said "was so bold a statement at the time that it felt awkward to be out with him".
