Smart meters

I’ve just had a phone call from our suppliers saying they NEED to install smart meters for our gas and electric.

I asked if that was a new law that said we need to have them. She said, “No it’s not a law, but you need to have them.”
I said no thank you.

She persisted in her insistence that we need to have them installed.
I asked if the call was being recorded and said I hoped it was, because her insistence sounded like attempted coercion and that is illegal.
She put the phone down.

Do we NEED to have them?

unless the law has changed , then you can refuse to have one installed,,,I won't have one either...

No, not compulsory, but you may have no option if your current meters have become obsolete, as a lot have, are unrepairable or can’t be replaced by another non smart meter.

They told us some time ago that we "needed" them. When they came to look at our old, thickwalled stone-built house, they couldn't get a phone signal near the meter, so gave up and went away! They haven't bothered us since!

Well there you go🤗 Mollygo

I resisted having one for years but in the end I wanted to take advantage of a good deal and a smart meter was compulsory with that deal. I've been fine with having it since then.

This is what happened with my mum...her old one was obsolete....so as a compromise they fitted the smart meter ...but didn't flick on smart option ....so in essence a normal meter if you like ...she's EDF

About two years ago they insisted I had one I had resisted but gave in, they came to fit it, took my old meter out, were going to fit the new one, when they got a phone call that there was a problem and to put the old one back in, they did, and I ve never heard another word since !!!

Last time we had a phone call and was told ours 'needed replacing' I asked why, saying I'd lived in houses with meters far older than our current ones, and never heard of one being declared 'obsolete'. Of course if they break down you'd be in their hands, but has anyone come across a well-functioning meter in an ordinary house really being obsolete.

When I asked whether it was compulsory and he said no but they were "mandated offer them".

I have received numerous emails telling me that I should have a smart meter installed. My current meter works perfectly well and I cannot be compelled to change it. I simply ignore the emails. Nobody can be compelled to have their meter changed to a smart meter if it’s functioning properly.

Mollygo you were wonderful! Got what you wanted. On the other hand, years ago I had smart meters installed as part of planning for old age forgetfulness mobility problems, etc. All went well for a few years now the gas meter has gone dumb and edf wont mend it though they keep bothering my neighbour to have one. And they had the cheek to suggest I get a neighbour to read the now stupid meter for me.

I haven’t met a person yet who has aSmart meter and is happy with it.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 15-Jul-24 18:58:47

Me neither.

No problems at all.

I’ve had a smart meter for years. Am happy with it.

I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t want a smart meter. I have a display monitor where I can see exactly how much I am using at any given time. I don’t have to crawl into spider infested corners to get a monthly usage figure. I can go away for the winter months, use my nest device to turn on an off my heating, underfloor heating etc and not have to ask my neighbours to send me meter. It’s all calculated automatically and correctly.
I’m with octopus and can not complain about their customer service. Having a smart meter has been excellent.

I am very happy with the Smart meter I have in my home.

My husband has loads of customers who regrets having them. There have been progs on TV and radio about how much trouble they are and also how inaccurate.

A programme recently included a man who left his work as a bouncer in a club to fit Smart meters as they were crying out for people. He said they had hardly any training, they took on anybody and he said he would honestly be very surprised if ANY meters he fitted actually worked because he didn’t have a clue what he was doing.

Our previous tenants had a Smart meter installed and it has been nothing but trouble. Currently it is charging us more for electric even when that small house is empty with no electricity being used than our 4 bed house with appliances on all day every day.

I don’t have to crawl into corners to read my meter. There are no spider infested corners in my house anyway.

If you’re happy with it and you wanted it, there’s nothing wrong with having one.
I object to being told want me to make an appointment because they need to install one, when it isn’t compulsory.
My meters are easy to read, I pay my bills, so what’s their problem?

winterwhite Mon 15-Jul-24 21:28:24

Ours are in the garage at eye level. We couldn’t be doing with gadgets that reproached us every time we put the kettle on. One size doesn’t fit all.
What might have tempted us was an announced scheme that smart meter owners could get some sort of discount if they ran their washing machines late at night but I don’t think that came to anything.

Is your supplier Scottish Power by any chance Mollygo? They seem to be carrying out a very aggressive campaign to get meters fitted at the moment. They rang my 93 year old aunt and told her that if she didn't get a meter fitted now, she would have to pay to get one fitted next year - which, so far as I can ascertain is totally untrue!

MissAdventure Mon 15-Jul-24 23:37:52

I'm now being offered cash incentives to have a meter fitted.
They've tried every other way, and I've refused.

No. The caller was certainly a Scot, but then so was the Boiler installation firm caller last week and we’re not even near Scotland.
