Genuinely confused lol

One local chippy now has a sign asking for payment in cash, for reasons given on this thread.
They don’t refuse card, because that means they’d go out of business.
Evidently the students who use it are good at paying with cash.

I always have £50 cash in my purse. It may well be there for months, but several times, my ability to be able to, if necessary, dive into my handbag and produce cash has been very useful.

Cash would have been useful last week in some supermarkets when the till network went down.
We use cash a lot, particularly in our village with the small traders, they prefer it, as does the pub.

Shops that take cash only, unless they are fly-by-night black marketeers will be paying tax. The reason they want cash is because bank charges for card readers, credit cards or cheques are quite high and this what they want avoid. It means they can keep prices very low.

On selling on ebay eyc. There is no tax if you are just selling yur own belongings that you want to get rid of. Even if you are a small businedd VAT does not come in until your turnover is £90,000 a year and as for income tax. Unless you are clearly trading and making a steady income, HMRC will not bother you. They keep a beady eye on selling sites like ebay.

So essentially, continue selling your personal possesssions on ebay, even do a little bit of trading. and stop worrying about payng taxx, it costs the HMRC more than they will get back from you.

To be honest, I cannot do with all the hassle. Our daughter sells on some website or another. Takes photos of item to sell, uploads to the website, sells the item, pack it up, takes it to the post office. Too much bother for me. I give all my unwanted items to the British Heart Foundation. I do have decent clothes and jewellery from well known stores and so far I have made the charity over £2000. They always let me know how much my donations have made.

I also donate everything to BHF and am signed up for gift aid and the are happy to do a pick up. I am amazed at how much they have raised.
It is a charity close to my heart (pardon the pun), they are funding research, carried out by my consultant and his team, into my unusual heart condition.
In the past many women died undiagnosed from it.
My neighbour, who sells stuff on Ebay, is at a loss as to why I don't sell my stuff, rather than donate it.

If you exceed £,000 pa you will pay tax. I do the selling on sites for a charity. Because there are so many sites now the prices offered are an insult.
I don’t where this all going to end. I also take good unwanted children’s clothes and toys to refuge centres and drop in’s.
I was ready to take a boot full of donations to these centres but was informed that they have so many donations they can’t take them at the moment.

Not sure what you are confused about? Small shops may not want, or be able to afford, the charge that is levied on them when customers pay by card.

Whether they are paid in cash or by card, the income goes into their accounts and counts towards their tax bill.

Of course, it’s possible that some do it to avoid tax, but that’s trickier in retail than it is for some other service providers.

You’re not silly.
I very rarely use cash, except for gardener and cleaner.
And no shops I use, have asked to be paid in cash. I always use my Cc and pay the balance off every month.
I don’t sell things on EBay or other such sites.

I pretty certain I heard this being discussed but can’t think where. I think the emphasis was on the amount of turnover. I’m not really sure.

I’m intrigued as to what others make of this.
