Sewing Boxes and Name Tapes

I’ve just been sorting through a sewing box which my Mum gave me over 50 years ago. It’s tall, thin, opens like a book & is made with wood from a redundant altar. I have never emptied it or cleaned it in all those years - first time for everything. It’s now dust free & shiny with Pledge! I found all sorts of odds and ends, full of memories, buttons, a needle case made by my Mum before the War, ribbons kept ‘just in case’ and packs of name tapes for all three daughters which got me thinking of the panic sewing-on of the wretched things the day before the new term. Having seen Camilla on the news today all done up in her finery, I wondered, as I sorted, whether she’d ever had to do this. 🤔
What memories good or bad are hidden in your sewing boxes?
(I hate sewing btw 🤣)

I don’t like sewing, but I’ve got a sewing box for repairs. It’s quite organised, but it contains the original striped jumper that my Sindy wore in the 1960s, which has a hole under the arm and down the side seam. Why I haven’t thrown it away I have no idea.

Because, Casdon - you are obviously going to mend it ... one day

We also had to have our full name embroidered in chain stitch on the back waist band of our sports culottes . Plus our initials, in a chain stitch circle, on sports blouses and cooking aprons.

can't the names just be written with indelible ink.
most people these days never sew anything.

It causes a problem if you then want to hand the clothes on to either younger children, friends and family of sell through a unfiform shop.

I have bought second hand coats for my grandchildren from brands we love such as Oilily but which are expensive new. I have rejected any with names written in.

If you want something a bit special you don't usually want someone else's name in it.
If you want something for schoolwear then you would have to scribble any names out!
